Will a '79 gas tank fit into a '78
« on: July 14, 2010, 09:54:46 AM »
I may be able to pick up a gas tank that is supposedly from a '79.  Will it fit into my '78?  Also, what things would I want to pay close attentiont to while looking at theis tank before buying it?

Thanks,

The tank itself will physically fit, yes.....but the filler neck is longer on the '79-'81 tanks though.

So you'd need to re-use the neck from your old tank and have it soldered in place.

Yes and No. It will fit it the same space under the car, but the filler neck is too long and will stick out past the license plate

OK thanks for the answers...

One of the reasons for looking for a tank is because my filler neck is leaking somewhat... I know nothing about the gas tanks, so sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, does having a leaky filler neck work better with re-using it on a different tank?  Or would it make more sense to just re-solder the one I have on the tank I have now?

That would be the easiest method...and save you some money as well

take it to a radiator shop, they can solder it up and check for leaks.

if you can find a radiator shop.  back in the day they was 3 or 4 in town.  0 zero now.  the fix-it shops are still there , but dont do radiator work any more.  they say it cheaper to buy one then to fix them.

So I found a craigslist gas tank for$35 that's close to me.  My gas tank leaks at the filler neck and I know there is a hole in the bottom of it, I repaired it already and am amazed that my repair has lasted this long.

There is a shop around that can do the repairs but that's going to be $90( just what they told me and they never looked at anything so, I expect it will turn into more)  and a new tank can be bought for $130-140....

So, $35 for this one- provided it's clean and doesn't have leaks, and put my filler neck on would be the least expensive way to go- probably...  Lot's of "ifs" in there.

when you look at the tank . look were the gas lines run along the back of it.  pop the clips off and look.  they rust bad in there.  I got one for my 79 , got it home, wire wheeled it and had 12 pin holes along the seem.

some times better to buy new.

With the work involved in dropping the old tank and putting a tank back in, I suggest getting a new tank. I bought one of the Spectra brand, Canadian-made, tanks for my 79 on eBay from Tamraz. The price was reasonable and the shipping was fast. You could shop eBay to see if there's a lower price on the Spectra tank. Or see if your local parts store can get it for less. But, I highly recommend you get the Spectra tank whichever source you use, since they're the best.
