1978 EFI W72
« on: January 02, 2011, 09:46:01 AM »
Well, I thought I had a post up already of my little project but I couldn’t find. So since I actually have something to update after better than a year, I thought I’d share.

For a recap: 1978 Was Gold on Tan W72 A4. Why it is now a really faded red, I can only guess, but I’ll bet real money that beer was involved.

Since the A/C wasn’t technicaly removed (found it in the trunk) I can only guess that it was used for weight distribution. And holy crap does it weigh a lot.

Build sheet

Ok, meat of the update. Block was in OK shape. Had to go .030 over, other than that, all was good with it. 6X-4 cc’ed at 93, had them shave to get 91. With the new pistons, standard deck, head gaskets etc. I should be sitting pretty at 9:1 compression.

Rotating assembly is all balanced. Went with SRS pistons, RPMMAX h-beam rods, Billet Flywheel. Currently have a friend getting me a custom hydraulic roller cam for an EFI application since nobody makes one for a Pontiac.

Making a little progress here and there. Like the old saying goes, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Imperial Blue Metalic I think is the official name of the color. Basicly that really dark high metalic blue on the new chevy trucks. All the stripes and bird with be grey. Plus the YO 17x8 snowflake with colored parts painted to match the stripes.

Thats the plan at the moment. We'll see how long it stays together.  ;D

I didn't black out anything on the build sheet. Even went back and looked at it, just not printed. I have no idea if they normaly come that way or not. This one was laminated and given to me with the car. It's mostly stripped now, and I haven't come across another one in any of the usual locations. Gas tank is yet to be dropped, but that's about the only hiding spot left.

DOH!!!! Yup, there it is. Guess I didn't look hard enough. Funny it wasn't in my post history. Oh well.

Anyway, camshaft is being done. Not sure on the specs yet, but I trust the guy to get me what I want. Looking for lots of low end tq. Since it will be a full roller motor, and hydraulic roller lifters are rather heavy, I won't be turning this one much past 5500 r's. Unless I miss a shift that is. Hopefully the rev limiter will keep me out of trouble.

What EFI system are you looking at installing? I have play with some in the past and have my thoughts. Also, it depends highly on what yo want to accomplish.

The air cleaner would actually work better if the holes were sealed. The thought was to increase air flow, but in actuality they let pressurized air out.

I'll be using an LS1 ECM on the car. I'm half-heartedly looking for a whole 99-02 Camaro/Trans Am that I can steal everything off of. ECM, BCM, Keyless, Alarm, Cruise... the whole smash. If I get lucky, I may even be able to swap in the ABS/TCS stuff as well, but I'll have to do more research on the front spindles for that.

It's going to be a slow process, but it should be interesting when it's done.
