Time wise, how far did this new wrinkle set you back Doug?

I assume that since you're working on the engine that the car itself has sat for a bit?

this is the intake and carb I will be using until I find the one I need for the 77.

it's a 78 W72 Q-jet and intake.  I have found some but looking for ( early  June ) build date.

I got the 400 finished and painted today.  eastwoods ceramic paint http://www.eastwood.com/ew-ceramic-engine-paint-qt-75-on-gm-corp-bl.html
water pump to the plate gauged at about .015 from the plate to the impeller. it was a little over 1/4" gap
I need to order the W72 valve covers,  gas pump and balancer  for it yet.
get all the brackets, pulleys painted black and on it.

Ok I'm going to ask a dumb question here

Why don't you need to put primer on an engine block but you need it for everything else that you paint which is metal

OH and by the way Doug the block really does look good

Doug...When you were working on the water pump to the plate gap, what did you do to lower the gap?
Everything is looking great.

the pant need something to bite in to.  like the primer.  with a clean engine , the cast has deep pores in it. that the paint fills and bonds to the block.  I did how ever use some from a rattle can on the milled ( smooth areas ) so the paint wont flake off over time.
