New harness now no power ?
« on: September 30, 2011, 11:49:21 AM »
I hope this is something easy but I just put my new engine harness in from M&H and now I have no lights or power to start car ?? The battery checks out ok , fuses look ok so I tried to start the car to see if it starts and nothing happens :(
The only wire not hook up is the green colored wire coming off the alternator that I was told goes to the blower motor for the AC which I didn't hook up because I plan on not using AC
Also I didn't remove any ground wires while doing this.

Any ideas ?

I'll never be east bound this way ;)

I didn't think so , but I went and checked anyway , and it looks correct , though I did try it the other way but doesn't slide/fit in all the way so I put it back but I did try the lights while in that position.

do you have the original power fuse on the top left hand side or has it been replaced? the original you cant check without a multimeter to see if its good... a reg glass fuse will work just fine 30A I think... and you can visually see it... plus I believe all the wires on the back of the alternator need to be hooked up, green shouldnt be a/c you should have the two prong connector that consists of the field wire and gauge wire, then the 12V wire goes on the back... might be a few wires?

First thing I would do would be to unbolt the forward light harness and engine wiring harness from the fuse block and then reseat it. Make sure the bolt is tightened down so you get good contact between the parts.

Up next, did you run the + feeder from the battery to the alt? With my 78, I had absolutely no power to the car until I did this. Probably 10-8G wire coming from the + battery cable.

Thanks guys , I have to get to work , I will post a little later on and I have some pics to post for help. I will say I have no pos. feeder to the alt coming from the battery , maybe thats it ?? and I will try to re seat the harness. All the fuses look ok but I can check again tonight when I get home .

Thanks again and I'll post from work soon ;)

this is the one that came from my 77.   that red wire has to be hooked up to the alt. or its a no go.

Well that's what it was , no postive wire going to the alternator, I didn't know I needed it cause the previous owner had the wires so hacked up that nothing made sense , so now I'm pimping a new engine harness  ;D. , wow this is all new to me because I always considered myself a "show and shine" guy and now I'm doing things with this car I never did with any other ..... Feels awesome !!
I'm just so happy to hear that 400 running again , thanks again to all of you as you helped me a lot and this is just the beginning of a long road with this car as it needs everything so PLEASE be patient with me as I might be asking dumb question from time to time ........... Thanks again !!!
