Glasspack.....Yay or Nay?
« on: September 22, 2008, 10:38:34 PM »
I'm thinking about a thrush glasspack.  I was just wondering what you guys think about glasspacks.  I'm going for an extremely loud sound that is also very low will this help me accomplish it?

I put them on my '73 455.  Loud when you want to make some noise, but quiet enough to talk while cruising down the road.  Mainly I did it because they are old school stuff- no such thing as Flowmasters back then.

Thats pretty much what I want and I definately don't have the money for flowmasters (starving high school student paying for all parts restoration on a 78 firebird)

I would suggest a decent to good "turbo" mufflerset. they arent as exspensive a Flow Masters. they have a good low rumble to them and last longer than a glass pack on a daily driver. I had both on a Cutlass and the Turbo mufflers were the what it needed, good low sound at low speeds at hiway speed you dont have to raise the volume to ear bleeding level on your stereo.

By putting gas in the glasspack and setting on fire you burn out the fiberglass packing in the muffler, giving it even more of a louder tone, only thing is you must make sure all the gas has burned out and done before you install them on your car, also another trick to making glasspack a little louder is to reverse mount it, this one might get you into trouble with the local authorities if you have a noise ordinance.

Thrush turbo mufflers will give you the sound you are looking for, without being to noisy in my opinion. It is an oval styled muffler rather than a straight through glasspack! They are ruffly 25 bucks a piece.

I'm rockin' the glass packs right now.  I like them, but I might add some resonators later.  Mine are from Flowtech.
