What is this number on my TH350?
« on: February 14, 2015, 10:22:51 PM »
I found this number on the left (driver's) side of my TH350 transmission, just above the fluid pan.  Is this a partial VIN or should it maybe match the engine unit number?  C3 is embossed on the top of the bell housing, but thus far I've uncovered no other markings on this transmission.  What is this number or what am I missing?

Thanks much -

Driver's side above the pan should be your partial VIN that matches it to the car

No big deal, it's had a few transmissions in the last 35+ years then, they've opted for quick replacement unit rather than rebuild original.
It appears to have come from a '75 Buick built at possibly, Framingham MA.  (45G and body number 101148, which in total as shown, is actually the engine number it was bolted to from new)

I'm assuming 4 = Buick, 5 = 1975, and G = Framingham?  Are you aware of any differences between TH350, either in gears, shift points or governors?  This transmission has always performed well, but not the way I recall a TA transmission performing.  I'm debating which direction to go with the transmission now.  Any benefit to hunting a '79 TH350 from a Trans Am or other vehicle?

Thanks again for the help with this question!

Based on the usual figures I'm guessing that's what it decodes to. I'd  imagine there may be some minor pressure and setting differences between larger/heavier vehicles and lighter using the same trans but don't know what it is. And no reason to believe or know what's in yours either, just a reused case. If you believe it's not shifting right drop it in for a service, check condition and setup.

I'm seeing a lot of variations now that I begin looking - especially aftermarket.  Curious about the TH350C version, and what it would take to make that work in a stock '79.  Summit racing seems to have a lot of parts for gearing and shifting options.  Been thinking about an overdrive but had been reluctant because I thought my transmission matched my engine.  Since it doesn't, I've got a bit more flexibility.
