Will not start when engine is hot
« on: July 13, 2019, 11:48:19 PM »
Hello,

New member here so first posted question. I'm the owner of a 77 TA with 6.6 TA 400 stock everything. Had a starter go bad so had it replaced by a known TA guy here in Arlington TX. Car starts first time everytime until I drive the car and get the motor nice and hot. When trying to start car when hot, it's a slow turn to no turning of the motor. I had my mechanic adjust the timing but no help. Again it started when the new starter was installed. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Factory exhaust manifolds or headers?
Did you re-install the factory heat shield on the starter?

Welcome to the Texas heat. Ditch the stock starter for a mini-starter to solve your heat soak problems. I use the Powermaster mini-starter on both of my Birds and have no starting problems. Summit Racing has the Powermaster 9610 for Pontiacs (PWM-9610) for $181.99. This starter works well with headers or stock manifolds.

Check the basics first, but sounds like typical heatsoak associated with headers. Does the car start fine if left to cool for a little while?
