Topic: 78 y88 steering wheel and grill inserts

Did all the y88's in 78 come with the gold leather wrapped wheel and grill inserts. Half the pictures I find have gold wheels with black leather on a gold steering column and the other half show a gold wheel with gold leather on a gold column. Are both correct and if so, how do I know which one I should have? same thing with the grill inserts. half show gold ones and half show the black ones. Which is correct and again how do I know ? My car currently has the gold column with the gold wheel with black leather and I have the black inserts. Car has a 400 and manual trans and fisher tops if that matters or not.

The correct for the steering column is a tan wheel with gold spokes on a tan column.  The non Special Edition Gold cars had black steering wheel and black column.  Same thing with the grilles, the Gold Y88 cars had gold grille inserts and the non Special Edition gold cars had black grille inserts.  As far as photos that you have seen, first, you cannot buy gold grilles, so most people not knowing buy the black grilles and install them.  Same goes for the steering wheel.

Doesn't the color of the wheel depend on the color of the interior? I've heard that you could order whatever color interior you wanted in the Y88s which would explain why The Phoenix has red cloth. (And I'm pretty sure someone else had one with the same combo.)

Yeah, it's kind of funny that the T/A's had black steering columns while the formula's had (or you could order) color coded steering columns.

I don't think you had a choice on interior color if it was a Y88...maybe I'm wrong.

And "regular"T/A's (I'm not talking about SE's or Y88's) could have other color columns besides black, or am I misunderstanding?

I have never seen a true y88 with and interior color other than camel tan but who's to say that if you had the $$$ and wanted another color that you couldn't get it.  And yes the column was typically color coded to the interior.  The black column on the Gold cars after the y88 was stopped is more of an exception than a rule.

"And "regular"T/A's (I'm not talking about SE's or Y88's) could have other color columns besides black, or am I misunderstanding?"... yes, they could, but the standard was black, just like the seat belts.  You had to pay extra for getting the items in your car color coded to your interior.  But like I said, regular Gold 1978 Trans Ams (not the Y88) had black columns, not camel tan.
