HELP NEEDED FOR Adding a WS6 Gear Box
« on: October 23, 2006, 07:28:30 PM »
Ok well I need some expert advise, hope someone here can help. As some of you know Ive been building a 1980 Trans Am and basically turning it into a 79. Replaced 301 for 400 etc etc etc...

Anyhow, we just purchased a new gear box to make the steering more close ratio, got it to 2.5 turns now. However there still seems to be some play in the steering at the top maybe about 3-5 inches at the top and so we are determing that it must be the rag joint?????

Is there something Im not thinking about here? Could it be the rag joint? Got any ideas on this or where we might be able to find one? Id appreciate any help and heads up on making this turn out. I love this TA and its definitely coming along very well, now we are just fine tuning stuff to make it better. I aint building it to show, Im building it to GO!

Thanks in advance!

seems like its not tight at the top, has almost the same play before changing the steering box.

Are you talking about play when you turn the wheel from left to right or are you talking about the whole tilt column wobbles around?

Im talking about driving down the street. Theres play at the top of the steering, like 3-5 inches, if you were driving and trying to go thru traffic, seems to have play, not tight like RTS should be.

Nevermind, we replaced the rag joint & steering gear box, steering is now as it should be highly recommend changing this if you go over bumps and it feels like your front end isnt holding the tires this will resolve that issue. The part is like 13.00 but is slightly labor intensive to remove the old one.

For that price, it sounds like a rag joint repair kit that gives you a new rubber disc and a couple of bolts. Disassemble your old flex coupler and install the new rubber. Available at many auto parts stores.
