1978 Decals
« on: December 08, 2006, 11:05:25 PM »
Interesting topic over at TAC about proper decal placement on a 1978 Trans Am.

First question is shaker decal.  This question has been gone over many times in the past.  However, for the record, the only 1978 model year Trans Ams to have shaker decals were those with the optional W72 engine and those are T/A 6.6.  The base 400 cid and 403 cid engine came with blank (no decal) scoops.  This was how it was suppose to be from the factory.  6.6 LITRE decals in the proper 1978-79 style lettering font did not come until the 1979 model year.

Second question is front bumper decal.  The smaller TRANS AM decal on the front nose above the driver side headlights was NOT used during the 1978 model year as it was during the 1977 model year.  This decal reappeared for the 1979 model year this time with a very small PONTIAC just underneath TRANS AM and was placed just above the lower driver side grill opening on the bumper which would have been below the head lamps.

For those who participate on both boards, I hope this clarifies the confusion often associated with the 1978 model year decals.

John, or anyone that knows.
I know that in 78 they deleted the small "TRANS AM" decal from the front clip. Was it also deleted for the 78 SE's? I cannot find a SE that is missing the decal.
I'm restoring a 78 to be an SE mostly clone  (leaving the front emblem red, and red wheel caps).

Thank you, Jim
