headline/t-top trim help?
« on: January 10, 2007, 07:05:36 PM »
Hello all, I'm new to this site, but have been watching and learning for  a while, and recently registered and posted a few questions over at TAC.

Any way, I Have  a question for all of you Trans Am guru's.

I'm working on a 78 gold SE it's time to do the headliner and t-top trim.  This is all that I have in the car, what pieces are missing?

Thanks for the help, Jeff

Hey, Jeff...I'm no guru but you'll need all the parts shown below as well as  several metal clips that hold the "U" trim in place.  The U-trim is available new through most of the main parts dealers along with the covers for the tops themselves, also pictured.
The small pieces in the 3rd pic aren't repro'd to my knowledge and you can pick them up through eBay, though often hard to find. Here's a few auctions to point you in the right direction. Got any pix of the car??

You'll also need the covers for the seat belt retractors on the roof (shown in your pix)

Don't forget the camel tan dye to get the plastic parts into the correct color. They should match the rest of your camel tan interior. I believe Pete sells this as well - SEM Dye is the product you're looking for.

I'd be interested in pics of your car as well!

Thanks, i saw the auction with all of the trim pieces, but wasn't positive that they were the same since the auction lists 79-81.

One more thought, it seems that I read somewhere that there is a difference between the seat belt covers on a hardtop vs. t-top car.  Is there any truth to that?

I'll try to get a post going tonight with a few pics of the car, don't have any here on my work computer.

Oops, I may have made a mistake...looking back on the pic of your top it appears to be a Hurst roof (??) In that case, trim may be different; I'm not familiar with Hurst tops well enough to say for sure...maybe someone with Hurst tops will chime in.
Yes, retractor covers are different for hardtop vs t-top cars. I bought some once from a hardtop to use on my '79 t-top; they wouldn't fit. I re-sold them and picked up a set from a t-top car..fit perfect.

Sorry about the mix-up on top styles...I'll see what I can find out.

EDIT:  From what limited pix I can find so far on Hurst top trim, I believe the trim to be different between Hurst and Fisher. Sorry for the mix-up.

No, you were right, it is a Fisher Roof.

I thought so because of the location of the handles (center) but the size of the glass appeared smaller than Fisher and made me second guess myself. Oh well...thanks for the back up.
