Post by: 4SPEED on October 18, 2009, 05:16:14 AM
1977 W72 Pontiac 400: Y6, YG (automatic) WA (manual)  block code

what's the difference between the Y6, YG block?   is one early 77 and other late 77?

Y6 is the W72 400 (auto) for '77...I'm not aware of a YG in '77.

I don't think there's a YG.  I think that it's just easy to mistake the Y6 for YG, so in some places (I think on this site as well), it's listed as Y6 and YG.

right
i'd love to have a w72 motor but if im going to go through the hassle, i'd like to get a y6 and i wouldnt need heads either as i still have those just no longer have the correct y6 block and even if it isnt #'s for my car, atleast it would be a correct style block.

The YG engine is listed in the GM parts catalog for the engines and original GM liturature, so it is not a typo or a mistake.

Bit of a strech but that Y6/YG block if you've still got for sale, what was the partial VIN on that one? Been trying to track down an old engine for a SE T/A
