There is no way to tell simply by looking at it, and no way to say if it is even stock, likely, but then half the swaps owners are not aware of. The ratio is not cast on, it is stamped into the axle tube. The chrome cover is not original. Do the old spin the wheel and count the driveshaft turns, but that's based on also knowing diff is not worn and if it is posi or standard. To be sure, just pull the cover, check the old oil for any rubbish, count the teeth or check the stamped numbers on the sides, add new gasket and fresh oil and know for sure.

I've a problem. I can't identify my rear end axle.
There is nothing writen on it except "1254333" and "D0199". I've looked everywhere but there is nothing more casted on.
I know that my 1979 T/A 403ci olds TH350 rear end axle is stock. It has a chrome finish 10 bolts.

Anybody knows what is the ratio of my rear end axle, please ?
Restoration / Headlight panel bolts
« Last post by Forsaken on October 18, 2017, 05:26:52 PM »
Iím restoring my 79 trans am and I was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the four bolts that are on the headlight panel that bolts to the fenders. I bought all new hardware and have painted the panel but two of my bolts are broken. Are they pressed in? Thanks ahead of time.

Hello everyone.
My name is Tony (obviously lol) and I'm from Rochester NY.

Mechanic by trade for 27 years, diehard hotrodder with my style planted firmly in the 60's style....until it comes to 70's vehicles.
I dig all second gen Trans Am's, especially the 77/78 style.
Yes, because of Smokey and the Bandit (like many). I was a young kid when that movie came out and it just struck a nerve. Love those cars ever since.

I have a 78 solar gold w72 auto car with t tops and camel interior....or, that's how it was born. Right now it's a disassembled shell.
It's rust free though so I'll be putting it on a rotisserie and putting it back together. It'll be pretty much stock because honestly, I just like they way they were.

Other stuff Ive built and have now are a 57 belair which Ive had for 29 years (first car), 60's style chopped steel 32 Ford 5 window drag inspired coupe with a GMC blown 327/5 speed, chopped 52 Chevy truck again 60's style, 63 impala 409 4 speed, lowered 77 c10 daily
This stuff is more of a lifestyle for me vs a hobby...some
Say a sickness. Lol

Anyway that's about it for me.
Looking forward to being a part of this site.

The colour could be a reaction between coolant and fresh radiator along with old stained coolant passages. You're not just using straight water?

It  takes a 195 thermostat that is a dual action  one.
Ac delco part # 12T19E for the 195
For a 180 it is 12T19D

If the water pump was ever changed,  they could have used a stamped impeller and never clearanced the divider plate. Or the original divider plate is rotted.  A cast impeller and clearanced divider plate will keep it cool
