A month ago I found this 77 t/a. #'s mach W72 400 auto. started on it today. I got the interior out, and the back glass, and the old seam sealer scraped off the floor. its better than I thought. the left front must of had a bad heater core . full of pin holes. but ware the seam sealer was still looks like the day it was put on. I'm going to try to get this one done by August. I hope. This one is my wife's car so you'll see pics of her working on this on. not today thou, she's getting ready for turkey day.

keeping the sunroof? dont think it quite fits on a Trans Am :( some t-tops would look great :)
-
I agree with you about the sunroof. It will not be going back in. if it wasn't a #'s car I prob would not of got it, just because of the sunroof.
I have a Hurst top for it. but don't want to put that kind of cash into it right now. I need all the trim and about 500 for new weather-stripping. so I also have a roof from a camero I will use for a patch. My other t/a is a T top car, so one of both would be cool.
-
Looks like a great project 4SPEED! You have done an amazing job on your last car so I can't wait to see what you do with this one.
-
It's better to chop up a Camaro for parts :P

I hear that! haha

It looks good Doug, has the Mrs. picked out a name for the car yet? (I hear the Jeapordy theme in the background..LOL)...
Nice work buddy.
YA its kind of a long name. I hope Lori changes it . quote ( Mine Not Yours ) with a , you got your own to drive. as she walked out of the room.

Hahahhaa that's funny!!!
At least she see's the potential in it...my wife just politely accepted the fact that I will have this car for awhile but can't visualize the finnished product yet
She will come around eventually
-
I had some time this morning to go out (sneak out) and go work on it . I crimped the edge of the hole were the sunroof was. and cut a pattern out of some sheet metal. now I will take that to the camero roof and lay it out on the roof and cut my patch. I wish I had an English Wheel, then I could use the pattern I just made. but I realy like cutten on a camero. ;D
some don't like to lap the sheet metal, but doing it this way makes it a lot stronger and its flush when done.

Nice work!!
How do you like the crimper?
I would like one of those and a bead roller...and an english wheel as far as that goes
Spot weld or glue?
-
Nice work!!
How do you like the crimper?
love it. the other side of the crimper punches a hole for a plug weld.
-
OOH OOH what breed is it and what did it cost you?...Christmas is coming... ;D
-
not sure, its not mine. I'll find out for you. I want one to.
-
Nice work!
Spot weld or glue?
I will mig weld it with S/S wire. grind it off with a sand paper wheel. use deraglass filler over that to water proof it. strip the roof of all paint. metal prep with epoxy sealer. then spray feather fill http://www.evercoat.com/productDetail.aspx?pID=70 over the hole roof and start blocking.

Wow Doug that look great can't wait to see this one done. Wish my was was into T/As.
-
thanks Conrad. she cant wait either. here some time I need to get hold of Brett and see if I can get a package deal on the interior from roof the carpet. all black deluxe. there's a few grand. and I'm talking to a guy up in Canada about painting the bird kit on.
-
They have a kit for that bird?
-

Just curious but why SS wire and not standard mig wire?
You won't be able to tell there was a hole when your done
-
I use SS wire to help keep the rust from growing so fast on the bottom side of the welded area. plus its a stronger metal so when I grind off the weld it more likely it wont crack or when the car is done the twist in the body from a well built motor wont crack the weld, and cause the filler to pop or crack.
I'm going to use frame connectors and soled body mounts to help on this.
the car is going to be black, so I got to make the roof as straight as I can.
-
awe...that makes sense... it will look sweet when your done. Are you adding any re-enforcements to the underside of the roof?
-
yes ,I will use it from the donor car. just stich welds and seam sealer.
-
Right on...almost done yet? ;D ;D
-
go today to cut the roof off the other car. and will get the floor cut out to. and maybe the new put in. I should be done by Sunday. and ready to pull the car apart. bag and tag every thing.
-
Donor car, it was cold out there so took my time on the lay out and cut it big. I'll clean it up at the shop.
(deleted pic's)
-
I got some more done to her today. the floor fixed and the roof tacked on.

Doug - what's the red paint. Red oxide primer? Looks glossy.
What welder do you have? Mig w/gas? Wire/tip?
-
Its Red oxide primer, and its still wet. I couldnt wate to take the pic it looked so good.
the welder is a Hobart http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/wirefeed/ironman230/
I use 025 wire and tips to work on auto body and 030 or 035 on other stuff. gas is 75/ 25
-
They have a kit for that bird?
a stencil kit to paint the birds and all emblems on?
They do have one? Where are you getting it from.
-
thats what I asked you. do they and where from. I am talking to a guy that made his own kit. as far as I no there is not any stencil kits on the market, to paint on your bird kit.
-
Oh, I guess I worded that confusing, I have no idea if they do. If you find one, or find someone who makes them you should let me know, Id love to have that bird on a red car.
-
working on it. I'll let you no.
-
Okay thanks
-
I would also like to know if and when you can find
Thanks
Charlie

looks like me and you are at about the same place in progress it just took me 4 years cause I got my car when I was 12 and didnt know what I was doing. Bad thing is for right now I am putting a 305 or 327 SBC in it just to get it moving cause I have my fenders and the whole front end ready to put back on been off for a year, going back to the motor its just temporary til I get my 400 block built into a 461 Stroker like I want.
-
jsevans12 do you have any pics of it I would love to see your progress. I got my first one when I was 15. many moons ago.
-
Well before long you will catch up and pass where I'm at with my progress...I'm wathcing

nope. change of plans. I'm going with the roof swap. I pic up a Hurst top 77 next Friday. it was (WAS) a #'s car, some guy took the drive line out to put it in another car. the body is in bad shape.
-
jsevans12 do you have any pics of it I would love to see your progress. I got my first one when I was 15. many moons ago.
I have pics just need to upload and will post them tomorrow, Sadly for right now I am putting a 305 HO SBC or a 327 SBC in it just til I get my 400 Pontiac put together the way I want, making a pump gas stroker motor out of it.
-
if your doing a stroker, use a older block 1975 and older there a better built block and can hold a lot of HP.
-
Looking good Doug.... :D
-
Thanks Bub. I hope to have the body on stands by monday and the roof cut off and the paint stripped next week. I hope.
-
if your doing a stroker, use a older block 1975 and older there a better built block and can hold a lot of HP.
When I got the car it had the 481988 block I think is the casting number the orginial motor was blown up a long time ago.
-
new parts, the console is nice but not correct. the bracket is not metal and there is no rivets in the side. but I can fix that. I got the shifter bezel at the nats. Randy is going to make it gold for me, along with the steering wheel and dash bezel.
all I need now is every thing else. from headliner to the carpet.
Hitman, if you read this I need.
headliner
door panels-upper
deluxe seat covers + new foam for the fronts + seat backs
package tray
dome light, window cranks, door lock knob, all little stuff
and any thing else I am forgetting
and the SE bird kit
thought you may cut a better deal if I buy it all from you at one time. what do you say there bubby ;)

wow fast pace 4speed. who cut out the back window? I should have offered to pull your glass while i was there. I had all the tool's to do so with me that day. I am always prepared lol.
-
Doug - looks like you ought to go into business on rebuilding these cars. The 2nd one is way easier, eh?
-
did them shift bezels come in the 77's factory in the se's? I know mine had it but i thought it was aftermarket. any insight would be great as i may have to give randy a shout on that too.
-
no, but I think muscle car alley even putts them in there 77 SE cars
-
Doug - looks like you ought to go into business on rebuilding these cars. The 2nd one is way easier, eh?
you no , I thought of doing that. but I don't think people would weight 6months to a year to get it back. plus the 10k in parts + labor.
-

I took it out. I cut it , then pored Lacer thinner around the glass to soften the ribbon. pulls right out. the front is cracked so it will come out with a hammer ;D
-
the motor is going to: Ault & James Engine Rebuilding, 1326 Springfield St Dayton, OH 45403 (937) 253-8820
he has been rebuilding motors for 38 years. + I moved some machines into his shop for him last summer. so were doing the labor for labor thing. the 400 rebuild will cost me about a grand.
-
sounds like a great exchange I love the barter system
-
sounds like a great exchange I love the barter system
No kidding...I wish I had some of that pull right now, that I am trying to rebuild my engine.
-
Quit your day job ... 6 months isn't that bad. $10K in parts/labor is cheap. Some of these places roll upwards of $60K for a frame off - that's steep even if it's quality work.

10k + labor @ 25.00pr hr. there's no way any one could do it right for 10 grand out the door.
quit the day job? ahhhhh no. this week I moved ( prep and ship to new location) 6 presses. each was 35000lbs 4 days 12k , I'll keep my day job.
a friend of mine does it for a living and requires 10k down just to start on it.

today I got the rear end out, brake& gas lines off. its really not to bad under there. surface rust, that's it . rear tail panel does not have a pin hole in it. it has never been undercoated. oil and trans fluid up front. I still need to weld and grind the floor patch from underneath to make it right. well I guess it time to start scrapping and wire wheeling. uuuuug I hate this part of it. need to start on the left side rocker to.
here's a bunch of pics

that car looks alot better than i thought it was once torn apart, your underside is not bad at all. I would have thought otherwise. either way dude you are really getting into this project.
-
4SPEED...You get more done in a day than I do in a year it seems. haha
Great project. I can't wait to see what you do with this car.
-
ya I'm really pleased with the way it looks. good thing it been in a barn for the last 20 some years. no undercoating, and Ohio salt roads. this car dodged the crusher. big time.
SoonerTA I keep my hours on a calendar. and have right at 24 hr in it so far.
-
That's good to know - I'd like to see a break down if you would. Major chunks of time - breakdown, media blast, paint, engine, interior ...etc. It'd be good info. Obviously rust would be one of the most time consuming portions & the biggest unknown - probably the biggest variable from car to car?
-
looks like you lucked out in some areas I needed to give special attention too on my se. I had too many hours into body working and fab'n my back half area all of which seems to be really good on yours. my lower quarters and front outter wheel housings needed work and it was very time consuming. I think between fab and body work i had 80 hours into just my back half.
-
the 79 had 8 months and a little more than 400 hr's and the guy that helped had 200+ hr's.
so at, say 25 per hr. thats more then 15k in labor.
-
yeah i can only imagine what my bill would have been as I have around that into mine as well and I am no where near your cars overall yet I still have my interior to do. which i need to snap some pics of for you guys. brb I need to update you all on it.
-
And $25/hr is cheap. Now you see why these restorations go upwards of $60K given parts and labor ...

ya I no 25 is cheap . the guy in town charges 40.00 . I told him he was nuts. and he's one of those body guy that putts cardboard behind bondo.
-
Glad to see that it it in good shape for you!!!
Alsways better to have a decent body to work with

here is were I'm taking the body and all the parts to be stripped. and powder coated.
it about 25mi. from me in Piqua,Oh.
http://www.afipowder.com/industrial-commercial-service/thermal-stripping/
-
impresive to say the least!!
Both sides of the floor getting powdercoated?
-
no the car will be baked to get rid of all the paint, dirt ,oil's , seam sealer .
the rear end , frame, front and rear bumper parts, motor brackets. will be powder coated.
-
Right on...that baking process is kinda neat!!
Does it save a lot of time on the strip and clean part?
-
oh yes . it saves me weeks of stripping and sanding. drop it off and pick it up and its ready for epoxy primer.
today I took the frame and a bunch of other parts to get sand blasted. I pick them up Sat. or Mon.
-
just messing around today and found some graffiti on the firewall. I no what 2 of them are. but what is the 055 or Q55 stand for?

Doug if we live closer I would love to help you if u did this as a side job.

Conrad, I would love to have ya. do about 2 or 3 a year , depending on how the car is restored + patch jobs . could make some nice change.
-
that would be nice. If I was single I would move.

Are you guys gonna hug? HAHAHAa ... hehhehe ... just messing with ya.

Hey I forget to tell you that I cant post the pics of my car with the front off of it cuz there on my phone and dont have a way to get it on here, but the front will be off again so I will use a digital camera then.
-
Did you treat the trunk drops behind the rear quarters with something?
-
Looking good, very impressive :)
-
Did you treat the trunk drops behind the rear quarters with something?
yes I got this rattle can of rust inhibitor , it works really well. it turns the rust into a sealer. then I put some primer over that. when its done, seam sealer will go on the inside lip. I was going to replace it but didn't want to cut any more of the quarter to get into it. that was the worst spot on the car. the area was full of dirt and junk. see the new patch on the floor? all that dirt was in there.
-
Man you work fast! I wussed out on that kind of stuff and had my brother do it for my current car. I think I am going to take a stab at it with my other 79 when I do it!
Looking good!
-
my drivers side quarter has a patch that looks identical except i had to replace the drop off too. that was a pita to do like that.
-
Just about everything is a pita I think!!! ;D
-
did a bunch today. picked up the parts from being sand blasted. called the other place to set up a date to get all the paint cooked off the body and glass beaded. that was way to expensive. it not in the budget. so I called the the sand blaster dude. so I took it over there today. firewall, floor, wheel well, door jams, window jams, trunk. fame rails and tail panel. 100.00 bucks cash.

you have accomplished all the things i only wish now that i did to my 77. i really regret not waiting one more year so i could take care of the underside and rear end and subframe as well. lessons learned i suppose. I WILL be doing that with the 71 though.

alright now im jealous. I wish i could still have the time to be that productive. slow down you will have the car done before new years at this pace.
-
Nice work my friend!!!
What did the sand blasting cost you if you don't mind me asking?
I was thinking of getting mine soda blasted in the spring but we'll see...I likely get it sand blasted
-
its ok to use sand on every thing but the body sheet metal. it will warp the crap out of it. 300 cash for all
-
Wow that's good!!
The shop here quoted me $1000.00 to soda blast and prime the shell...kinda outta my snack bracket I think
-
The parts car you're getting, that car was that? is it beyond rescue?
-
Frode_skj
I think they all can be saved. It's just a mater of how deep do your pockets go.
the car I'm getting is a 77 W72 Hurst top auto trans car. a # car ( well was #'s) the guy took the drive line out. motor to rear end gone.
it looks like it was parked in a salt mine for the last 10 years. I will be posting pics of it here and in the donor car thread. if you or some one thinks it can be saved I will gladly sell it to them. but like most all will say, some got to die so others can be restored.
-
y88rick if I can get the 77 W72 auto motor with the parts car, do you want it ? so you have the correct motor in your car. I told the guy I will trade him his motor for one of mine + some cash. I have a L78 77 400 ether way I'm going to try to get it .( back up motor for mine)
never mind rick it's not the #'s motor.
-
you save so much time by just paying someone to blast it for you. and if you factor in the time and materials you would have to buy to do it yourself, its the same price if not less imo, i paid 400 to get every thing blasted saved me months in time
-

how true. I prob cut a month off the build and 1/3 the cash, my 79 was weeks cleaning under the car.
-
we got some snow last night. so I didn't go get the parts car. going in the morn. Randy emailed me. he told me my bezels showed up and will be done with them in a few weeks. looks like I don't have to wait (rick) heehaw
I did work on it for about 4 hr today. I what to get it back on its wheels soon. thats the plan any way. here is the pics

Cool. Nice lift too ;D I use a Ford 545 4x4 backhoe with forks on the bucket and a John Deere 5020 with a front end loader for mine, but they don't fit in the building. Outside use only. :(
-
As if you got that with paint already!!!
I need to get heat for my garage.
I figured by the time I'm done mine you should be on to the 5th one after this one ;D ;D ;D
-
thats my problem i cant afford to heat my garage 25x50 with 12' ceilings takes four hours to warm up by that time im done cant afford to let run

Love the car lift! and great job with the metal work! Please keep the pics coming!

looking good! im glad to see im not the only one that completely takes them apart :)
not completely apart. I don't want to take the dash out if I don't have to.
-
funny thing about the parts car , remember there is no drive line in it. I got there, backed up to it dropped and the ramps. backed up to the front tiers. hooked the winch to it. and started reeling the cable in . this is the funny part. ( the guy yelled stop, hold on. and reached in and put the shifter in (N) . I turned my head with the biggest grin. and just shook my head. ) that for sure need to go to Jeff Foxworthy, Redneck Joke of the Day.
-
you might be a redneck if you don't put the car in neutral when you load it on your trailer! LOL! you're making great and fast progress!! keep up the good work
-
holly crap , 10 pages and have not started putting it back together yet. you guys are the best motivation there is.

I am too very impressed. I wish I could get that much work done to my car.

dude did you shake his hand and say thanks for the priceless memory? LMFAO
-
no , I just wanted to go home. the dude was way out in left field. If he did his home work on the parts on the car, he would of got his money back out of it and some. t- roof , front end, spoilers, tail lights. dash parts. I'm in the green on selling the parts I don't need. and y88rick wasn't got his bill yet. hehehe

Maybe you should do 2 at a time Doug so I can keep up with your post.. Looking great

-
cool , I'm counting the days. rick I got the bezel screws and shifter cable clips and pin all the parts are going out tomorrow. when I get the shipping cost , I'll send you the BILL :o
-
well today was the day. I did it. ( the roof swap) it's really not that bad to do. easy really. I don't no if the way I did it is right or wrong. but here go's
first I measured 15" up the front posts. marked them the best I could. on the donor car I measured up 14 15/16" due to the cutting disk is about 1/8" thick. and cut one car on one side of the line (top) and cut the other car on the other side of the line (bottom).
on the sail panel , I took a propane torch and melted the led out to get to the seem. and cut above the seem about an inch. after the roof is off , then take off the 1" piece of roof on the seem.
do the opposite for the donor car cut the sail panel about an inch below the seem. and lay it on some saw horses to clean it up.

after you get the new roof and the car cleaned up your ready to mach them up.
-
I forgot , first I put some steal in it to strengthen the body

Cool - I was wondering what the donor car was for. I guess there's wiggle for glass fitment it you're off by say, less than a quarter of an inch. Any more and you'd know you'd have problems setting the glass I suppose. I'm sure you were closer at the end of the day ... just an observation.
Doug - do you have a real job or is this a full time thing for you now? I don't see how you do anything else at this point ...
BTW, that donor car is looking ever more sad every time I see it ... LOL.
-
all the measurements I took before I cut it off are the same with the new roof. so I'd say it's good.
ya I have a business , but my guys have some vacation there taking. we'll be back to work on the 4th.
-
GREAT JOB the only thing i would have done different ( you way is fine also) is on the windsheild piller i would have stagered the weld area instead of a but weld for example the inner metal i would have welded a few inches lower than the outer skin for more stregnth,
-
I thought of that but being my first roof , I was more worried about cutting them all the same. I'm not worried about my welds. thanks for the input, I will do that next time . if there is a next time. 8)
-
Better you than me! WAY beyond my skill level! Looks good!
-

Agreed...good note since that is a structural point...as well as it being a t-top car...and the a-pillars are double walled.
A staggered cut/weld would make for a much stronger union.
-
ya should au could au would au. If yall got any ideas how to cut both roofs perfectly the same , in order to do it like that I'm all ears.
and to tell ya. the weld is 10 x's stronger then the steal is. the wire mig, hard wire is good for 50,000 lbs per inch. plus when I'm done welding the roof on, it will probably have more weld then the rest of the car. ( its all held together by spot welds.) witch is the weakest weld there is.
you guys ever thank about this. you doing 80 to 100+ in a car that was built as fast as they could make it. with sub frame, 4 bolts. and a bunch of spot welds holding it all together.
-
Wasn't intended as an insult to your work, just constructive advise on my part....I'm sure you'll be fine.
-
WOW.. You definitely got a gift for this kind of work
-
Yeah why do you think I have been taking it pretty easy on my car until I get the subframe and g braces in there LOL. LOTS of flex there.
-
well I think I thought of a good fix for it. ( I really do see what you guys are talking about)
I will take a bar and slide it down into the pillar. letting it stick out about an 1.5" and slide the roof pillar over that and plug weld it. that should do it.
-
There is a decent amount of room to add bracing there on the inside since the A-pillar cover does cover almost all of it.
-
I have seen your way done several times doug. including the bar and plug welding. you will be just fine. I myself did it that way once. and would most likely do it the same way again. good job dude.

guys my statement I made last night was harsh. it was late and I worked on it all day. I was tired. I no the point you were making , and it would of been better to do it the other way.
I was stoked about getting this done and pretty proud of myself.
I do understand it was just constructive advise , and I apologize.

to every one have a good and safe holiday. God bless.

i'm very impressed! good job on the roof! swaps like that make me shake my head in aww when i go into one of my customer's body shops and they are cutting and welding new panels on a car. the jobs that strike me the most are when i see a car cut in half! crazy stuff in my opinion haha. again, impressive work my friend- not something i could do!
-
Lookin good...Lookin Good.
Merry X-Mas

doug, got presents for me?
-
doug, got presents for me?
yes. USPS , did it today . I tried to fit it all in a 10.00 flat rate box, no luck. 20.15 shipping . I'll PM you the BILL ! >:D
-
well today, I put a few tacks on it. did a test fit of side window trim all the holes lined up . I put the front and rear glass in it, shimming it to make like the ribbon is on the glass. snapped the trim on, all looks good. so I got it welded. now all I got to do is take the Hurst top track out and get the paint stripped and epoxy primed
-
hohoho more new parts. wheel cap emblems and the shifter button and handle. still needing a gold horn botton and the red nose emblem.

Fantastic. Nice job, that's more than I would try to do!! :) :) Keep the pictures coming, can't wait to see the finished product.
-
Coming along very nicely Doug! Makes me want to get my car barn built right now so I have some room to work on the cars-dang it! Really looking forward to seeing the progress pic's! Merry Christmas BTW! :)

It's time to start thinking about the motor and (trans)
what do you think? stay with the th350 or put a th400 in it. I really wouldn't mind getting rid of the passing kick down cable on the 350. thought about a manual valve body kit , but the 400 is much stronger but takes hp away from the motor. and using an 1800 to 2000 stall. the motor will not be a big cam . just a little over stock. (RV) performer intake and cam. domed pistons to up the completion. mostly stock with a little butt behind it. with headers, 2.5 full duel X-pipe exhaust (Pypes) . stock 15x7 with stock 225-70-15. bfg's or the 17x9's. not sure yet on the wheels.

hahaha thats funny! I have the car, and job, but the jury is still out on the gentleman part lol.
Looks like a good time! I still got to get my butt over to my parents!

very important, he must have a job so I don't have to support the both of them. she's spoiled and lazzzzzzzy

On the T-Top swap. If I remember correctly Brett said that one technique is to find the original spot welds and drill them out on both cars. Then you can swap the roofs and not have too much trouble with getting everything square. It certainly isn't something I would tackle. It looks as though you got the situation well in hand. It does help to have a shop with lots of room. I'm stuck in a crummy garage.
I think you're doing a fantastic job on this car. I'm enjoying seeing the progress. If I did some of the things you are doing in California....the liberals would have me thrown in jail. We have some really tough environmental regulations here. That's why I'm going to drive my Y88 to Ohio for paint.
Keep up the progress!!!!
Edit:
The part about your daughter, while I don't have a son...if I did, I'd need proof that your daughter had a T/A before I'd let my son date her!!!!
I have one daughter with a 77 T/A...the other one isn't interested in these cars.
-
doug did you order from ames? I noticed your parts on their book. i too need new bird center cap emblems.
just let me know what i owe you on the parts my friend.
as for your daughter, I have 2 t/a's a job and a gentleman but im already stuck being married and almost old as well. and i need equal income so i dont pass the test. lol.
merry christmas as well doug. to you and your family i hope it was a good one.

I was going to drill out the spot welds. but there was 3 mig tacks about 1/2" long on each side. probably from the guys that put the roof on and sent it down the line to be spot welded. so I cut it off to get it out of the way. and cleaned the sail panel up. if you were going to save the roof then yes take the time to remove it.
my daughter , well she's a ricer. no t/a .
ya out there in California , I am surprised they let you use rattle can paint, with out a permit. I couldn't live there.

I went to an auction a few week ago. ( old retired GM worker) or GM car dealer, there was tons of GM & Delco stuff there. I got some cool stuff. but in one box, I found some weather-stripping for t-tops. later found out with the help of 79WS6Resto Jeff. they are for 2nd design Hurst hatches . I guess hard to find and no one makes them. mine is the 1st design and mine are fine on the tops. so back in the box with the rest of them and to be stored away for another car. if I do another one.
just though I would share my find with ya. :)

nice. willing to sell them as my car had 2nd gen tops and i swapped them out only to find out that i will need to fab my roof and chance paint damaging it if i do so.
-
Hey Doug ,nice work on the roof swap ,you have some skills there .
Not to start anything ,but I was wondering if you could have replaced the metal where the sunroof was ,and then installed the Hurst roofs? Being that the Hurst T roofs were installed after the car left the factory ,I thought they could be put in at any time .
Or was it because the sunroof was already cut in that you decided to do an entire swap?
If there was any question about structural integrety ,could an extra piece of metal be welded on the inside of the pillar ,or is there no extra room when the interior pieces are clipped in?
Please don't take this as criticism Doug ,I haven't read the whole thread and was more curiuos than anything

no the roof was way to flimsy from the sunroof hole. I took 2 days to weld the patch in and it still warped real bad.

no, I think I'll hang on to them for now.
I might trade them for new seat covers , bird kit , lower door panels . stuff like that. so that gives you an idea of what I feel there worth.

Just to clarify: the pieces 4SPEED picked up are the weatherstrips that go directly on the hatches themselves (installed where the edge of hatch meets top of door glass ), not the weatherstripping for the hatch openings in the roof.
The pieces he has are for 2nd design tops but will work just as well on 1st design tops...this is not true of the actual roof weatherstripping, which is different between 1st and 2nd design.
-
Hey Doug ,nice work on the roof swap ,you have some skills there .
Ok I kinda figured there must have been a major issue ,or you would have done it differantly . It looked like a lot of work ,I can't wait to see your project finished
-
thanks 79ws6resto
rainman I would have done the same as doug in this case. as he would have had one big mess on his hands doing both to that old roof.
doug, got the parts yesterday, I have my computer literate bro in law comming over to look at this pos so i can get you your money thanks for your speedy delivery
-
that cool , when ever.
-
WOW. I just read the entire thread. You are moving on this car. You sure are good and are very precise with your next move on the car. Congrats on the new project. Looking forward to more pics and updates. I am learning alot from watching your progress. THANKS.
-
No kidding Justin. 4SPEED knows how to move and do a great job with it! Great job with this one so far.
-
today I got the t-top track out, welded the inside of the sail panels, stripped all the paint and cut the bad part of the rocker off.
tomorrow I will epoxy prime the body except for the rocker

I'm going as fast as I can, the body should be ready for paint by Sunday. but I'm not going to until the snow melts.
rick . computer fixed?
-
lol just giving you crap dude. no i need a new computer.
-
another way to fix a hole ;D
cut away the rust
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab27/4_SPEED/001-18.jpg)
get a 1/4" bar of copper. clamp it behind the hole. the wire weld will not stick to the copper and makes the weld on the inside smooth.

Great work - like Sooner said, I wish I had that ability.
-
Wow...when I look at what you have done, I just wish I had that sheetmetal and painting ability. Looks great!
I can do all the body and fab work fine, but the paint, I can and have. but this one, like my 79 will be painted by a pro. this black paint job will look like a pool of used oil sitting in the sun. the bird kit painted on and buried in a mile of clear.
and wait till you see what I do to the grills. it isn't going to be gold paint on them. :o
-
What! No gold paint on the grills? I hope the wife didn't talk you into a girly pink color ...
-
and wait till you see what I do to the grills. it isn't going to be gold paint on them. :o
I can't wait!! any hints???
-
I gave yall the hint. wont be gold paint on them. didsay they wernt going to be gold.
-
Gold powdercoating?
-
gold plated?
-
gold leaf
-
nope
-
gold plated?
yes , I'm talking to a guy that thinks he can do it. I sent him one cracked grill so he can try it. I hope it works.
2.50 per sq/inch. some body got a calculator in hand?

-
is that omni primer?
-
yes the high build urethane primer ( has a hardener). the stuff is the best, and hard as a rock. I will not use a lacquer primer. it a waist of time.
-
yea, i can tell by the color of it thats what i use also ,...lacquer primer just shrinks and causes all kind of problems
-
Sail panels look nice. Did you lead them back in or just use filler?
-
Sail panels look nice. Did you lead them back in or just use filler?
dura- glass . its a fiberglass filler. lighter and water proof.
-
today I work on the steering rod (what ever its called)
I took it apart cleaned it and painted parts of it.
got the rod from Jegs , its a polished s/s steering rod.
I drilled the hole for the pin and noched out the rod for the shim spring.

-
yeah thats exactly where it came from. i got a dell with a lot of technical thinggies in it. really fast.
-
Great job on everything. Can't wait to see those grills. I think its cool personal touches like that, that make these cars very individual.
-
hey i noticed your 77's interior was deluxe cloth did the door panels have cloth inserts in them or was it all vinyl? got a picture of them atleast?
-
vinyl and no good. I got one perfect lower left panel off it. you are talking about the parts car?
-
yes the parts car I am not looking for a used part just curious as to what part to order. on place wants $209 for preassm vinyl another wants like 259 and 299 but another has ones described to be a cloth insert for those with cloth int for a cool 297 just want to make sure im ordering the right part for my car. all i have a tan all vinyl deluxe and they didnt come with my car they are from a 76 y82
-
Hey Doug, I like the SS touch on the steering column. Nice work!
-
Hey Doug, I like the SS touch on the steering column. Nice work!
thanks Charlie, I only did it because. the one on my 79 is rusting now from wire wheeling it. and I didn't want to paint it. I have enough of the bar left to do it to.
-
what do you think about this? only gold plated.. I think it would be coooool.

-
Nexus for me to no and for you to find out. be married for 20+ years, you'll feel the chill.

went and watched the motor on the dino today. looking good! only about 285hp now he's going to pull the pan check the crank and bearings to make sure its all getting oil. and going to put domed pistons in it and H beam rods. I asked him about a 455 stroker kit. take it to about 400hp. so it on hold until I tell him to get it done.
the block should be fine for that. what do you guys think?
-
your choice.
-
I say 455 stroker!!
That's my long term goal for "The Project"
-
Stroke it but up to 450hp.
-
I called a place today about a stroker kit. all he had was a 461 kit. @ 750hp max. but told me with my heads, intake and Q-jet , cam ,2.5 exhaust. it should be 450hp or better. for 1350.00
I like the idea of all the hp, but don't want a big cam'd beast. and want it quieter then my 79. cake and eat it to. I guess
-
Actually That isn't a bad price for a kit that gives around 750 hp...
Good to know
you may have already posted it but who was that through?
-
Nexus
that's not the regular price for the kit. me and his son are friends kind of deal.
-
OOOHHHH!!!
That explains it!!!
Still a good price though
-
I was trying to get some work done today on it. just to cold. I couldn't get my shop over 40* so my guys that work for me are going to start on a temp. wall and ceiling around the car. told them to give me 5' on each side of the car. it will have heat in it . and lights in the walls & ceiling. one walk in door. the end wall will be removable so I can take the car out and put doors and fenders in it to work on. I'll get pics up asap.
-
Very nice 4SPEED...I can't wait to see that. It's nice to have workers on hand to help out with stuff like that. Now you just have to pay them, haha. Company expense??
-
Sounds like an awesome project. Looking forward to pics.

-
me as well and are there anymore updates on this project yet slacker?
-
I no someone that may get there part for 77 SE lost in the snail mail. could take up to 6 months to find them.
-
lol thats fine, i'll just smash it and collect my ins money as its worth much much more that way.
they wont notice a few missing parts lol
-
back to work now, weekend only for me. until the sun comes back out in a few months.
I did get the gas and brake lines ordered.
another 500 to the spend-O-meter.
-
i feel your pain buddy i really do. lol
-
i haven't been keeping track...i don't want to know how much I'm spending
-
so far about 3k and 70ish hours
-
Have you decided if your going with a stroker ?
-
no I don't think I am, do to it being the #'s motor for the car. I would like it to last another 30+ years. dome pistons and other stuff to get some more power. it's not going to be a race car. drivable show car.
-
doug are you painting this one white or sticking with the black thought?
-
Lori wants it black. I don't. I want a Marty
so if its going to be black. she going SE clone with a twist. some mods to it that you'll see at the nats. if I get it done.
-
looking forward to it. speaking of, I was talking to my uncle about the nats this weekend. he said he heard something will be changed for this upcoming year? he thought it wasnt happening anymore?
-
Hope they don't cancel it. It is one of my goals to attend the Nats in proper fashion when The Project is finnished
-
im doubting it. I didnt ask him where he heard this info from, but I would think its not valid.
-
as far as I no it is. and they change things every year. Brett and Mike would no if something was up with the nats.
-
gotcha and they have not mentioned anything like that so im going with tis not validtio
-
phew!!
now I just need to put a few pieces back to gether
-
man, your gone for a few days and trying to start a big 4 page thread one the nats getting canceled.
shame shame shame every body no's your name ( what TV show is that phrase from )
-
Everybody knows your name is from Cheers...I loved that show

-
cant wait for Dundee , GOING TO DO DONUTS IN THE PARKING LOT IN YOUR CAR. ;) ( after all the beers I got coming ;D )
-

-
we'll do some trans am bowling, set up cans and drive the t/a thru them and see how many get dented.
-
its cool its cool because if she ever gets dented im not fixing it.........im taking it in lol
-
worked on the a/c box today. I brushed air craft stripper on it let it set just a few minuets. presser washed it and gave it a light spray of dark gray trim paint.
not quite dry in the pics. the shine should dull some more.

does this look like a leak? or mouse pee? there was a nest of carpet and paper in it. sys. had presser when I had it removed.
-
i would just replace it rather than find out later it was a leak
-
great work...I was wondering what to do with mine. looks good
-
looks good what i did with mine was degreased it and then clear coated it to maintain that factory fiberglass look.
I cannot wait to see this one done.

clear coat is a good idea...does it still look good?

Pat
-
just armor all a piece of plastick basically thats your differance. its now shiney is all.
-
HEY I need that as well thanks keepat.
-
thanks Pat
well, if there was a mouse in the a/c box. I wonder what the heater box looks like. need to put a new core in it any way. :P
-
when i worked at the dealership, if we saw carpet, nuts, fiberglass, etc. in an hvac system, we ALWAYS replaced the parts. those little guys love to chew on just about anything! i'd hate to see you spend the time to clean it up, reuse it then find out it has a leak on your new carpet in the interior ;)
plus..... well....... it's old. replace all the heater/ A/C components in my opinion. thats my plan anyway...
-
just got confirmation on some parts coming from Restore a Muscle Car LLC be here by Wensday.
thanks Dave
-
Just got cought up...my you have been busy
-
went to the shop to look at the a/c box I painted. :P LOOKED LIKE CRAP
I took the other one from the parts car and washed it real good and put it in my sand blast cabinet.
sand blasted

Come on...leaving them covered is just cruel!!!!!
-
Kevin or any one
can you send me pics of your wheels. tire size? do they stick out of the wheel well? I no they will raise the car an inch or so. but I want to lower the car to the tire height ( no gap ) then do I need to worry about tire rub? is a 2" drop spindle to much?
any one here lower the ta with 17/9's ?
-
sorry about that. here is a pic I forgot to post.
the back side of them. ;D

What a guy ... I'd dock you 1500 posts for that and kick you back to newbie status if you weren't so good at fixing these cars!
-
well I want to post them with the caps and new emblems. I polished the caps today and got them done and working on the pics right now.

Hope these help. I am running 255 45 R17 tires. My car is a bit high for my liking but I will get to that this spring.
The outer most point of the sidewall is just inside the outer lip. Currently stock control arms are installed with Hotchkis springs all around.
These are the best I can do with my Mom's camera. My car stays at my parents for now.

OOOOOOHHHHHH
SHINNEY
-
thanks Kevin. I see the front & rear of yours could drop 2" easy. I was going to get 2" drop spindles and de-spring the rear 2.5" . just need to make sure I dont cut a tire
-
drop spindles and 2.5in drop blocks. I wouldnt de-spring it if possible.
-
If I used blocks to lower it . how much of the springs will be seen
-
the same as it is stock. just the rear end is pushed up from them a lil bit on a car i wouldnt do any larger than a 2 or 2.5 in but i'd do a 1 or a 2 since these cars commonly sit lower in the back from the factory without air shocks.
-
Can't blocks on the rear cause wheel hop and traction issues? I know trucks often use blocks but this is no truck.
-
i have a 2 inch block on the back of my s10 with a hard tonneau and it rides a little rough (i dont like it any more)
-
s10s get massive wheel hop installing blocks is not going to change the ride from what it was. it will hit your bump stops faster though but it will if you de leaf it too. and it may ride sloshy if you despring it.
the better solution is some fabin beefin and 4 link with coil overs.

that is why i went with the blocks but i hit the bump stops all of the time and i live on hilly, whindey, bumpy back roads it had lost luster of being lowered. i hope they dont behave the same way on a trans am.
is wheel hop that feeling like going over bumps when my tires spin?
-
typically when you burn out the back end loses traction. hoppin the whole time.
if you remove the bump stops and install smaller ones or cut them down or even leave them off you will get rid of the problem.

did a little more on the car today. I got the rocker on. I had another parts car with a good body, no title and no vin # tag. so the rocker came from it. here is some pics.

I didn't see it there >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
ya it a donor car. I paid 200 for it 8 years ago.
-
Other then the missing rocker, it looks in good shape
I wonder how much trouble customs would give me if I went on a road trip?
-

Awesome work Doug, keep it up, it's great to follow the process.
-
As much as it pains me to say this, I will have to pass.
I still need to get my passport set up to come over there and I think I would have troubles at the boarder with it
-
Great job so far Doug.
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO say it aint so doug say it aint so. that was a super solid body. oh man im so sad now.
-
rick tell your brother sorry. I really tried to not cut it up. I looked and asked for a rocker, with no luck . it is what it is. a donor. I tried a repop. it didn't fit up to the rocker that was still on the car.
there is one K car under the tarp that is nicer then this one. the #'s car. tell your brother same deal on that one. 4 wheel disk ws6 #'s 403 and trans, t-top, and a bunch of parts. its already stripped and DP'ed, 7" snowflakes. 500.00

you tried a repo rocker ? i got them and put a side on and it fit up pretty nicely, i still have the one side brand new sitting in my storage....
-
the one I had did not , It would of worked if I cut all the rocker off . but didn't want to cut any off under the quarter panel. the car has no vin tag , body tag or title. the vin tag in it now was put in by someone else. they drilled out the pop rivets and put a tag in it , big 1/4" rivets . ( illegal) and 6 years ago I tried to get a title for it thru the state. no go, because the vin plate was not the one for the car. the state was going to take it and crush it. but I took it to a friends farm and stored it there for 1.5 years in a barn. the car they took was another rust out parts car no title.

ha wow, mine worked out cause i did take mine all the way off, so it fit no problems.....is the state allowed to do that? i thought they could just retitle it with a new vin if its messed up like that or something
-
something about the car not having the right vin tag and me buying a car with no title, is illegal. the original owner needed to get a new title then sell it. and yes the state can take any thing you have. ( land of the free) right?
all in all , your screwing the state out of money. so they call it fraud.

What a P.I.T.A

Rick, I dont know if this is true but I was told the repop rockers are all for camaros, no firebird specific rockers and the camaro rockers are around 1 or 2 inches longer then the firebird rocker because it has shorter fenders so usually you'll have to cut it shorter if you usin it for a firebird. Could this have been the case?
-
i think the rockers are the same for both cars
-
doug, got your parts the other day. looking at your picture of your dash out. that rectangle part that is on the opening door of your a/c box and the one that goes over to the passenger side from the bottom of the a/c box in line with the trans tunnel, have any spares? I dont have either and been lookin through my parts trying to figure out what im missing and from what i can tell them two will complete my duct work.
-
well I don't no? I got tons of that stuff, Are you done screaming at me yet for cutting up my parts car. ;D
-
ummm yeah I did the same to a very solid oaky car (79 ws6 4 speed t-top) this summer so i forgive you.

thats easy send it off to be restored!
and dont want to spend 800-1200 to fix it. ;) paid 500 for it and got damaged in the shipping. cant get hold of the seller and didnt use pay pal. ebay kicked him off and I got a cracked dash for 500. that took 5 months of emails and crap. I'll try something with it.
-
owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
-
wow. you've been busy. Great work quality. I really like the A/C box and how that turned out with the clear coat. Good Job. Lovin the pics of everything.

That sucks. I've been there done that. I bought several sets of gauges when I was redoing mine and one seller in particular took 2 months to send me the gauges I bought and when they got here, they looked like he took a fricken hammer to them. They didn't look that way in his pics.

lol. Yea I read where he fished for the credit..AFTER..it turned out nice.lol.J/K. It's good to have knowledgable people like that.

you could always try a dashcap, seeing how you know good bodywork, you could probablly smooth it in ?
-
I say dash cap for now...thats what I plan to use...have one waiting to go on when the time comes!!
-
if I were going to cap it I would use the one out of it. I will try my best on it to make it look right. Once it's in, you really don't see it.
what I'm going to try is . I'm getting a syringe from my sister (doctor) and going to mix some rubber cement and supper glue together and inject the mix under the vinyl and see what happens.
here is the one from it. good one for a cap.

Yup that one is deffinately a cap canadate
It will be cool if you can fix it. Keep me posted on how it works out
I have a red dash that never had any cracks until I moved last and now I noticed some small ones in the pillar area.
I have the original dash out of The Project that could use some attention
and I have the black dash out of my donar car which will get capped
-
well a fix is just that, but I think the epoxy I put under the vinyl will keep it from getting worse. in order to see it , you'll need to put your head on the seat and look for it. so it's not to bad. it will work until we get a good alternative.
the die and primer is all DUPONT

I was going to say dashcap since that's what I did (mine was badly sun-damaged). But it looks like you've got it taken care of. Great work. I like the prism tape idea. Where did you get it at? I'd like to use some in my interior as well.
-
Doug,
Great job on the dash!
Pat
-
good work doug i too epoxy'd my cracks wish i primed it though. because i didnt the dye bled into the epoxy and you can see the repair but its down low and it will do for now until i can actually buy a repop dash
-
Nice touch with the trim ...
-
thanks guys. keep the motivation coming. Pat thanks bub ,like I said before . I hope mine is half as nice as yours.
y88rick I hope we see a good repro dash in our life time.
John, I got the stuff in a attempt to redo a bezel . looked like crap. so I tried some of the little parts.

thanks, I used zink and graphite paint on them. and yep this one is the ratchet shifter.
-
Doug,
All those little details make for a great restoration! Shifter looks great!
Pat

nice job Doug

Nice work on the shifter. Looks brand new! I'm going to have to do mine soon. It's a little sloppy.

good work doug your car will be very nice when done....nats?
-
You're work is amazing Doug, effen amazing!
-
Nice!!! Looks great, I am really enjoying this thread :)
-
the last few days I worked on the steering column. the batteries in the camera went dead, so no pics. I took it completely apart. cleaned it, new grease, stripped and re-paint. then put it back together. wet sand it and cleared. I did that after it was together, just in case I got scratched. here is the after pics.
now all it need's is Randy's gold spoke wheel. and this part is done.

what paint did you use on that wheel hub doug? I bought the vht wrinkle paint...curious if it was it so i can get an idea of how mine will be turning out.
-
rick , I'm not sure the brand of wrinkle paint. but one thing, you need heat to make it wrinkle. I used a heat gun. on the can ,it said a hair dryer will help. heat the hub up first. spray it. after 10min do it again. shoot it 3 or 4 times. the wait. after 5 min. cure time I took the heat gun to it to speed up the process. It doesn't look OE but came out pretty good.
Hammer, thanks bub. I plan on taking another column apart with pics and posting it in the restoration section. after our chat on the phone, I agree. it would make a grate HOW TO thread.
PS. got home from the snowball run @ 1:15am , tired but safe. grate food , good people. I had a good time. I had to be on my good behavior. I was sitting with the Hitman Brett and our president Dan

Here are photos of Doug's completed shift plate, restored gold bezel and the steering wheel spokes that were golded to match up...I took a few pictures of the wheel next to the original wheel in my 76 SE so you can get an idea on color match with original..the flash kind of distorts it but the spokes match right up.....

here is the cam card. I dont know what I'm looking at?
-
cool so it's ready for me to pick up now?
-
why did you put a chevy cam in a poncho? ::) Although the part #'s are different, that is def a chevy grind. tight LSA , small duration and moderate lift. seems like a towing cam w/ low RPM range. would have went with a wider LSA (114-112) and more duration to fill the chambers. hope it works for you. based on the numbers, it may have the bark, but lack the bite to back it up. post on its performance. curious to see how it does. where you trying to mimic the W72 cam?
-
XE grinds are all 110 LSA in pontiacs as far as I know.
-
I know nothing about cam's . I let the engine builder order the parts. is this cam good or bad. I dont what to lose the vacuum. and want it to have a good idle. stock stall. 3.23 gear. rare headers, pypes 2.5 X system.
-
It's like kind of a cruiser cam. Not stock but not crazy. It is in the ballpark of the 068 cam with more lift. I ran an 068 in my old 400 and it had a nice idle to it with plenty of vacuum.
Idle quality is almost directly tied to duration. A wider LSA can help as well. Just for comparison my cam in my 468 is 238 intake/ 242 exhaust duration @ .050 with almost .600 lift, and I have around 18lb of vacuum. Which is enough to run my vacuum advance, heater controls, and power brakes just fine. BUT it doesn't like to idle under 1000. It will idle at 750 but it really starts to lope around at that point.
-
you'll have plenty of vacuum. with your set up I would have picked the XE262 or XE268 in that series. that is based on the info provided. the installed cam is a tad 'small' for my taste. more of a towing strong low RPM torque cam. you may finding yourself wanting to change in the future. better suited w/ 2.73 gears.
I personally like the XE274 in that series. does require higher rate springs and 2500 stall though. no vacuum issues w/ rhodes lifters. the 268 & 274 will be right in the 'sweet' spot at highway speeds w/ the 3.23's. pull really strong from 2700/3000 - up. run the 274 in a 79 w/ 400/ TH350 & 3.23's.
-
thanks guys. and remember this is my wife's car. don't want to have any starting issues when its cold or hot. I just want a dependable car for the Bandit Run next year.
-
is this cam any better? will it need springs and a stall ?

Those look good dude! Messy job aint it?
OMG I had to stop to put a dust mask on. my work bench is covered in iron dust. I took the heads to get a valve job and washed, he told me I did a decent job on them , and he would touch um up a bit before the hot tank. and he's going to remove the other builders stamp from them to.
-
Just browsed through the thread. Nice work Doug.
-
Yeah I am suffering from no-drive trans amitis as well but only because of the damn weather!
-
Looks great Doug good job.
-
Time wise, how far did this new wrinkle set you back Doug?
I assume that since you're working on the engine that the car itself has sat for a bit?
-
he's got the 1st stage of no-drive trans amitis . and that aint good.
Your telling me!!!
My turn will come

Very nice Doug! Thanks for the pictures.
-
Lookin Good!
-
Ok I'm going to ask a dumb question here
Why don't you need to put primer on an engine block but you need it for everything else that you paint which is metal
OH and by the way Doug the block really does look good
-
Doug...When you were working on the water pump to the plate gap, what did you do to lower the gap?
Everything is looking great.
-
the pant need something to bite in to. like the primer. with a clean engine , the cast has deep pores in it. that the paint fills and bonds to the block. I did how ever use some from a rattle can on the milled ( smooth areas ) so the paint wont flake off over time.

-
thanks guys, I'm trying to get it worked on. but like everybody else, this dame economy is sneaking up on me. It just took a little longer for my line of work. our President is destroying the small business, and making it hard to stay in business. the money is there for the t/a but just scared to spend any of it. over the winter I paid off 2 cards and 1 car. so once I get that cash back in the bank , I'll be balls to the wall on this bird. plus the guy that helps me, is working on another car right now. it may be fall before this thing sees paint. and thats fine with me. that will give me all winter and spring for the assembly and work out any bugs.
-
today wile working on the rockers and lower quarters, And wishing I had a rotisserie. here is what I came up with.

-
file board , if that tells ya any thing.
-
got a dust mask or are you like me and just take it like a man?
-
I love the smell of it. I think glade need a bondo air freshener. no mask, I'll pick the bondo bricks out later in the shower 8)
-
yep i dont either just a resperator when spraying
-
I love the smell of it. I think glade need a bondo air freshener. no mask, I'll pick the bondo bricks out later in the shower 8)
I thought I was the only one that was silly enough to sand without a mask!!!!
i too love the smell of bondo, fresh paint, thinners...well the smell of a body shop...it gets me excited
-
yes the respirator when spraying. that stuff will mess you up later in life. but I'm sure the dust really isnt any better for ya.
even welding smoke can kill ya . have you ever welded on your galvanized rocker panels? did you get a kinda sweet taste in your mouth and get a headache and a sick feeling ? galvanized welding smoke is a type of cyanide.
-
mmmmmm cyanide
-
Have heard too never clean part's with brake fluid & then weld.

Thatta boy Doug
-
What's happening with the build Doug?
-
I'm waiting on my body/painter guy to get done with a 66 ss 396 chevelle 4 speed car.
I could keep working on it but hes a lot pickier then me. and would redo spots I would call good enough. So I'll wait. I'm in know hurry on this one.
I sold the GTA. the guy picks it up tomorrow. so there's the cash for the interior and bird kit. but wont need that stuff for several months. I hope to have the jams painted and setting on the ground by early fall and painted before the cold hits. paint it on a nice day in October, when there is very little humidity in the air. that will give me all winter and spring to get it ready for next years car shows.
I'm also looking for a trailer to keep it in. the Featherlite doesnt look to bad. http://www.fthr.com/bumper-pull_car-trailer/model4926/ but will keep looken for cheaper trailers.
-
Right on!!
-
baby steps doug baby steps. im sure she will look just awesome when done.
-
I had a slow day today. so I thought I would strip the paint from the hood and fenders. there's a lot of surface rust on them but it look worse then it is. with very shallow pits. so now the paint is off and presser washed. I'll DA sand and DP them this weekend.

-
looks good what kind striper did you use ,aircraft stripper?
-
Yep. I put one coat on and razor bladed it off. then a second coat and power washed it off. then sprayed acetone on them to diluted any stripper from between the sheet metal at any spot welds.
-
you better get them soda blasted and primed up them bare metal parts like to rust faster than a horse racing at the track. but great efforts doug. with my 77 i gave up past the body and didnt do that to the doors forward and wish i did but ohwell. wait i did do one door. just not front clip or pass door.
-
The hoods are a pain to sand ,prime and paint. Lots of little angles. Great job
-
thanks Justin,
Rick,
I took the doors fenders and trunk lid to Aesthetic Finishers in Piqua, Oh.
they will bake all the parts in a oven and wash them then glass bead the parts. they should come back looking new.
the door will be clean inside and out.
they only charge 75.00 per part. so thats not bad at all. If I was to figure my time and materials doing it myself. and dont have to worry about the rust coming back in a few years.
they told me today 3 weeks before I get them back :P
http://www.afipowder.com/industrial-commercial-service/thermal-stripping/
-
for the time you save and materials that is such a cheap way out of it doug. great thinking
-
That's a geat idea Doug!!
I don't even think I have anything like that around here
-
I got um back. except 1 door it was full of pin holes on the lower skin and frame. so I took them a better door from a 79, I'll pick it up after the POCI show next week

Those came out really good Doug. I can't wait to see your car start coming together and get painted.
-
dude, i wonder if i have a shop like this around here. this is exactly what i want to do to the y88. now are you going to have them dipped in a primer at all?
-
now are you going to have them dipped in a primer at all?
yes, there is a place in Dayton thats doing it. a chemical dip, rinse, and primed. they wont be red oxide but they will be primed in spots I cant spray.
the hood and deck lid were blasted with plastic media because of the rubbery glue used in them.
its about 1500 to do the hole car. but it has to be totally striped. it will take bondo, seam sealer and rubber off like melting butter. I didnt take the body because I didnt want to re-seal the seams that dont need it and the spots you cant get to.
-
dude you just perserved this car like no other.
-
That turned out great Doug!!!
-
Very nice work! Keep it up! :)
-
looks to be well worth the cost of doing it
-
DP'ed so far . it takes a wile to sand under the hood frame work. I got about 4 hours in the hood (bottom side)
I found the date code on the hood, it from a 81. so it was changed at some point for some reason. the fenders are 77

If I might ask, what is that port for? The hole with the two lateral cuts in it? What is it's purpose and where is it located? If I was guessing it would be under the seat.
Gunner
-
they are drain holes. they have a plate cover over them that is held in by seam sealer with tabs that go in the slots and bent over.
I think GM used them when the body got dipped in primer. there is also a drain in each quarter panel.
-
yeah and they sucked this is why we have to replace floors today lol
-
The drain holes weren't meant to drain water out of a finished car if it got wet inside. They were there to drain out the chemical washes and primers that the body was dipped in at the factory, like in the photo below. After that, they were sealed up with the cover plates and seam sealer, and not meant to be a drain after that :) .
-
But they work great to drain water out...lol
-
yeah to have gotten one of their scrapped body cars back then and stored it until today would have been cool.
-
just got back from the POCI show in WV. and picked up a few parts for the 77
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab27/4_SPEED/PARTS/008-17.jpg)
valve covers, wire loom , valve cover bolts, uncut GM keys , hot air choke tube and air cleaner to carb stud bolt , correct rubber tube for the air cleaner , pump to carb line and a new GM power steering line.

cool wish i could spend money right now but i just got myself in the hot seat.
-
with the wife? I feel your pain.
-
kind of i feel the seat getting warmer and warmer right now. I just have about 3.5 hours or so before its lit on fire lol
-
OOOOO SHINEY
-
Doug, I just found this thread. Man you are doing a fabulous job with this car!
I've got a T top roof that I cut off of a '78. At some point I want to install it on the '77. I'll be referring back to this thread for info. ;)
-
Daniel ,thanks for the complement. I still need to get with you on the work I want done. I may just talk to you in Dayton. I am not even close to being ready for parts like this yet.
PS can you restore 67-69 gauges?
-
Doug,
I'm not doing 67-69 YET, but I very much want to get into the 1st gen market. All i've done with 1st gen so far is to create the oil pressure gauge that installs in the clock housing (1969). This was a one-off piece that I did in the spring. I'll have some complete 2nd Gen gauges on display in Dayton next month. Be sure to come by! Pete (fbodywarehouse) and I will be at the same location.
-
cool thanks I'll say HI. when I get there. My wife has a 68 that need the gauges done. I think it will look weird with the restored car and a faded dash cluster.
-
4SPEED... brother I have to tell you; what aan amazing restoration! I just sat here and read through the whole thread! I have not been a member of this forum for very long but I have come to realize that the folks in the T/A world are amazing! I have learned so much from reading what you and all the others in this post have talked about! I am happy to be a part of this community and to have the opportunity to learn things that will help me make my car even better! Can't wait to see what see will look like when she is done! Keep up the amazing job! Bear
-
Great resto! Looking forward to more updates!!
-
thanks guys. it will be a little bit on any updates. I want to get my wifes 68 done first. ( so I can drive it ;) ;D )
but I'll be back on it buy spring.
here is her 68
http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?topic=25106.0
-
Im taking a brake from the 68 to work on the 77. so here is an update on it. the big part of the body work is done. and has its first coat of urithane 2K primer on it. the doors and fenders still need some work.
and yes I posted this car in the for sale section. (lookers & tire kickers looking for a deal) there are still 2 guys that want it that I need to make a list of the new parts, and email them.
but the more I dust it off to show it to a buyer , the more I want to keep it.
Lori told me last weekend , if your going to keep it , get it done.
SO, as of right now she's still mine. (my wife is so cool.)
so over the next 4 weeks it should be blocked , jamed and assembled , ready for paint.
I want to get this bird in paint before I paint 78 SEE YA . I got a new HVLP gun and what to use it first before it gets used on another car. but so far so good , it laid the 2K primer very nice.

Just keep it. You won't regret it.
-
you can't go wrong with thhat spray gun. I painted all my parts with one and it lays paint nicely. Bout to go paint my chevy luv right now as we speak.
-
Sweet. Glad you're keeping as of now. Looking forward to the updates.
-
Doug. I was trying to learn a little about spray guns. I looked up the HVLP. Seems like the ones I am looking at are a lot cheaper then the other "professional" guns. http://www.harborfreight.com/professional-automotive-hvlp-spray-gun-kit-94572.html
Are these a good quality? The other ones were all like $150-$300
-
I have used one of them. its a good gun , if you have never used a better gun. I wouldnt paint a show car with it.
the HVLP gun is no better then a siphon gun , its only plus is that it uses all the paint from the cup. and was designed to make less wast of the paint. ( its spray pattern is smaller so there is not much overspray)
I will still use my siphon gun it works good.
-
Looking good Bub. Lori is cool. I say keep it. You know you dont wanna sell it.
-
is'nt that purdy ;)

this is another one i have
http://www.spraygunworld.com/products/Sharpe/Razor/Sharpe%20LVLP.html
-
Thanks Rick. That helps me out a little. It may sound stupid but I have an extra driver side door i'm going to practice on..
-
practice makes perfect. a few tips. I spray at 40-45psi at the gun. i open my fan pattern wide so i have plenty of over lap and when spraying mettallic's, I change direction to my pattern as well this technique prevents tiger stripes. alot of painters cannot seem to grasp that as they were not taught that. you can also adjust the ammount of actual fluid that comes out of the gun you can go very little until you are comfortable with it too. good luck and were here for you with advice if needed.
-
just thought if you did end up sellin her it might bring higher price

she got her first block sanding today. and found about 15 little dings and low spots. and some waves in the roof.
right now she looks like a bondo bandit. 90% of that will come back off . 2K it again and block it.
-
the roof was just too wavy for the color its going to be.

almost waveless. we put the t-top frame in to stiffen the roof. it will be ready to prime again Fri. then 400 wet block sand it. if it looks good after that , we'll move on to the other parts. and 600 wet sand the body later with the other parts.

I glad to know I wasn't the only one to be blessed with the era on the sunroof. The sunroof was leaking (the reason we have to replace the floor boards). The previous owner installed so much silicone on the sunroof that it wouldn't even open. My son wants to go back with a new sunroof. We will see how that works.
-
sunroofs!! :P

OK now I'm getting picky. the body is about ready, so I thought I would prep the under side for paint. I started to dry sand it with 400 grit. to take the smooth off the epoxy so the paint will stick. the frame had rust pits in it. and the more I thought about what it would look like painted , the more it bugged me. so now I'm filling the pits.
the paint is a Dr. jekyll mix from my paint supply place. a base/clear and the clear is a semi gloss.
am I nuts ?

Great work Doug! great to see a project(s) coming together.
thanks bro. we all missed you and yours at the nats this year. hope to see yall next year.
are you still working on your t/a?
-
Your only nuts if you plan to drive this in winter and make a beater...then sanding the frame woud be nuts
seeing as how this will never see winter and will likely be more of a show car (I'm assuming) then a little TLC on the frame is cool, but I like and appreciate over top resto's
-
no more pits. and I tryed to get a pic of the paint. the pic doesnt really show what it looks like. but its really close to a piece I have with 70's primer on it. one pic with and with out the flash.

I also worked the front floor toe area that I replaced. it looked like crap.
before
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab27/4_SPEED/77%20W72/024.jpg)
you can see the lap of the toe and floor is backwards. so with a little trimming ,welding and the magic of glass work , it looks like this now.

Very nice Doug! Like always, you do amazing work.
-
are you going to put body colered over spray on that pretty orange bottem like the factory did?
-
are you going to put body colered over spray on that pretty orange bottem like the factory did?
awwwww NO. it gets baged tomorow so I can go back to the body.
-
Looks great Doug.
-
Me and my wife's uncle finished up all the body last night. And I got up early and washed it and gave it a quick coat of epoxy w/reducer to fill the 220 marks and seal the body work. Next it will get dry 180'ed then a reduced coat of urethane primer and wet sanded.
it might see paint before snow..

looking good Doug.
-
Wow Doug it is looking great! Thanks for the pictures.
-
I took it off the rotisserie today and time for the wet sanding to start. I hope this is the last coat of 2k primer.
I'm ready to see it another color, and soon.
PS. the pics were taken without the flash. thats how bright it is in the garage now.
with only 5 t-8, 6 bulb lights.

Super nice job..........
-
wow cant wait to see this one finished
-
she got the first wet sand today with 220. OMG this car is going to look good.
I wiped it down with wax and grease remover to make it shine.
the next wet sand at 600 grit will make it smooth as a baby's bottom

The body looks great Doug. You do great work.
-
Wow Doug, this one is going to look awesome. You do amazing work. I wish I could do body work.
-
Wow that's fantastic work, how do you have the patience to do all of that sanding?
-
Is it done yet?
-
Wow that's fantastic work, how do you have the patience to do all of that sanding?
it takes alot of time. and I have help. what I dont see , he will. the body will still get a low build coat of primer and a few waves/low spots will get Polyester Glazing
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=poly+putty&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&prmd=ivs&resnum=16&biw=1345&bih=603&wrapid=tlif12904855342031&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=8990622068178078252&ei=Uj_rTPn1EoP58Aau6dmyAw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CFMQ8wIwAA#
its for very small areas that a primer will not fill. (good stuff) its good enough for black paint now but I want it to look like a black mirror. so one more step before its sealed. the body might be in paint by next weekend. then put it back into roller then off to storage until the the rest of the parts are done.
-
Your a machine. I can't wait to see you work your magic on the 68.

That's the inflator bottle for the space-saver spare tire ;)
werent those blue as well?
In 1976 they were blue in color. I have an original one.
most 77's I've seen had this red bottle, but when I got the car it had the blue bottle in the trunk with the tire.
my 77 has the RPO code N65 and really doesnt mean the tire got the red or blue bottle. I think it was the size of the tire.
being a 14" or 15" rim. and could of been one of the things changed when the shaker went to the taller one.
maybe John Witzke has a different RPO code as I know his is the red bottle.
-
Sweet as usual Doug. Wheels very nice bub.
-
They Sparkle like Diamonds can you turn those into a set of earrings for me?
they would look good on ya ;) . but you might want to start gaging your ears now, so you can show them off at the Nats. :o
-
How close would you say the Gold wheels are to Solar Gold . Are there a lot of metalic
-
Im not sure. this is the 77 SE gold. and not to sure the 78 had the same gold. as my 79 8's are not the same gold. Pete is getting me this paint code so I can paint the grills the same.

I think I'm going to hold onto the 17's there a little over 800 w/shipping to buy them new. and I'm not going to take a big loss on them. as 3 of them have never been out of the box yet.
-
Don't blame ya. That car need's nothing
-
I'm pretty sure that 77-81 was same gold on wheels
-
Pete did the gold on the 79 did'nt he

-
very nice work Doug....
-

-
Don't know. I haven't thought that far ahead yet. what you got willis?
-
just a small update. its going slow but its going.. doesnt look like much is done but the body is ready for its last wet sand. doors, trunk lid and fenders are about there. 3 wheel spoilers still to primed and wet sanded. hood needs blocked.
I'm going to quit saying when I think it will be in paint , because it never happens that way.
SO... it will be in paint when it in paint.. :P

Nice walk around shot's. Enjoyed that...
-
the shaker's center line was about all sanded of. it had 4 paint jobs on it I stripped off. I made a new line with duraglass filler , and a polly filler over that to feather it to a sharper line.

-
thanks . we'll see how much gets done today. if the plan works out, all the parts go to the paint booth next weekend.
fenders, hood, trunk lid, spoilers, mirrors. the doors will be jamed and installed then painted on the body. the next weekend.
-

looking really swift doug, cant wait to see this and the 68 finished.
-
Doug, you have an amazing talent! I can't wait to see this done!
-
another piece to the puzzle is done. the only thing I dont like, is the pop rivets I had to use to hold the bracket on.
also got some aluminum rivets for the shaker. I got to try a test piece first to see what the crushed side of it will look like.
-
above and beyond the call of duty. i'd hate to see you with something like a super duty car. that thing would see all them details like keepat did to his.
-
Nice work Doug, love the attention to the little details.
-
Doug I've been told that the Duraglass filler would work well on my fiberglass hood what has been your experience with it would you recommend it?
-
you will be fine as long as its repairing a crack if you need to replace a corner, you'll want to use mat first then use duraglass to mold it in.
-
you should fix any glass with fiberglass mat and resin first. and duraglass to shape it. then a poly filler to fill pin holes.
whats worng with the hood? corners and louvers broken? or just stress cracks. send me a few good pics.
-
ditto to clerify i meant like a hair line crack or stress crack not a break.
-
One section looks like someone sanded and put little waves in it that need to be leveled out the corners are ok, and a few little stress cracks.
-
yes , you can fill a crack with it but I prefer to grind out the crack and replace it with glass matting. the glass filler is still just a filler and your just covering the crack.
this one is in my shaker
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab27/4_SPEED/77%20W72/004-6.jpg)
grind it out on both sides if you can.
use a piece of tape on both sides and then massage out any air
(http://i846.photobucket.com/albums/ab27/4_SPEED/77%20W72/010-4.jpg)
you can use a heat gun to make the resin setup alot faster. and sand it down with 36 grit. to fill the 36 grit sand marks skim coat some filler over it and 180 grit it off .
-
One section looks like someone sanded and put little waves in it that need to be leveled out the corners are ok, and a few little stress cracks.
on the waves , I would use regular filler. duragass is very hard sanding and doesnt blend and feather very well.
-
Great post Doug Thanks for the photos and the heads up in using the regular filler on the waves.
-
you can also get stranded tiger hair which is the same concept doug just displayed but also cures much faster. also a bottle torch heats that stuff up to cure really really really fast.
-
I havent seen her with her clothes on in so long . I almost forgot what she looked like. ;D

JUST DO IT ALREADY lol looking forward to seeing it doug.
LOL , sorry bro, I'm not going to rush this one. I dont what to get it done , then look at it and say
( boy I sure wish I'd just spent a little more time on that spot. ) WE ALL SAY IT..
it will get its first coat of paint before it comes apart. this one will be painted 2 times. the first coat will be wet block sanded , to look for the really small waves and low's. (how picky is that?)
-
i hear you dude i hear you and yes we all have been there. and thats not picky man, thats called wanting it right!!!
-
Coming along nice!!!
-
Looking great Doug. If you leave it the way it is right now you can turn it into a hover car. Just a thought.
-
It looks awesome already in my opinion :) And it will be one AMAZING T\A when it's done :)
-
thanks guys.
I worked on the tail lights today. I took apart the one and cleaned and painted the inside with silver caliper paint. and on the lens I used s silver paint marker. the other lens is the original chrome, but will still take it apart and clean and paint the inside. and touch up the chrome

Looks good Doug good job, I will be trying that out on mine later. Any certain brand paint pen that you used?
-
Looks good Doug good job, I will be trying that out on mine later. Any certain brand paint pen that you used?
I found it at Lowes its a Sharpie paint marker. it came in a pack of 2 the silver and a gold marker.
going to see what the gold looks like on another lens I have.
-
thats exactly what i did with mine and the vents and radio bezel. works great as long as you have a steady hand.
-
the garage wash down starts today to get ready for paint. once its clean and I pressure wash the ceiling, walls and floor. we'll 600 grit wet sand the car and wash it down with grease and wax remover. and keep the floor wet so the car can be sealed and the first coat of paint. Im adding 2 heaters for paint day. I'd like it to be 100+ degrees in there for paint. then shut them off and let the paint fly. the exhaust fan will cool it quick, and want to keep the car metal warm as long as I can. then keep it above 50 or so for a few days.
the next time the temps are in the 50-60's for a few days , the paint is going on. about time , right?
-
OOOHH sounds exciting
You should ask the mrs. to take pictures while your painting so we can get some action shots!!
-
Will do. but shes not good with a camera. I'd like to Video it somehow.
-
well not very good photos is better then no photos!!!
How is she with the video camera?
-
I know it's not a poll but I vote video, I know it would be a pain to do Doug but a video of some basic steps and some of the helpful things you discovered over the years involving bodywork would be a tremendous help for newbies like myself. I know that's asking a lot but if you could find the time that would be great ! Good luck on the paint !
-
I'll see what I can do. the sound will be tough , with the stereo blasted , air comp and the exhaust fan running.
ohhhh and BEER,, it helps to cut out the tast of the fumes. jk yes I have my PPE stuff on (most of it)
Lori wont go in there when I'm spraying.
-
You'll have to mount a helmet cam for us!!!
-
here yall go... the hood is done. I'm spraying a reduced epoxy over the body work and 220 sand marks.
she's ready for 400 now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMyCCdcAhUo
-
Nice hat Doug. Good job on primong the hood.
-
Very cool. Thanks for posting that Doug.
-
Good job Doug ! Hope to see more videos, Thanks for posting.
-
doug, you must have too much time on your hands to post a video of you spraying primer. LOL but then again i think if I knew how to tape and post a video as well, I'd be guilty of it too. ;)
-
clearly I'm a little slow to the party but I could smell the paint fumes, as if I was in there with you!!!
Brings back memmries of helping my dad paint cars and Airplanes!!
-
picked up the paint , clear and reducer today :) :)
want to see what 700.00 gets ya? Im saving about 300.00 by putting a cheaper paint down for a base. I wont used the hole gallon , it is just to cover the car. then we'll wet sand it and use the PPG black over that , then clear it. the 2 qts of black cost more then the gallon. ( both PPG urethane paints ) ( Omni is a PPG generic paint )
the plan is this weekend for the body. but if it rains we'll paint all the parts over at a friends paint booth.
also I got the front seat springs fixed and there ready for new covers

-
Looking good Doug, I can't wait to see it in colour.
-
doug that is why i buy a gallon of base to save some $$ its funny the cost of paint and how much it has went up over the past 2-3 years isnt it?
-
one gallon of the PPG DPC 9700 cost 280.00 the gallon&1/2 I got was 160.00
-
dupont chroma base is $212 a gallon but its the basemaker and clear they really rape you on for black....I get the stuff at whole sale too dont know if you do or not, but i would assume you do having a business and all.
-
I was going to go that way but they told me they could not guarantee a color match with chroma base.
all the small parts will be painted in a booth, and the shell and doors in my garage. and not all on the same day or may not be the same week. all the parts go to the booth tomorrow
ya I get a better price then most. this paint is about 350.00 a gal. and just for sh_ts I asked the price for red in the type I'm going to use...... 700.00 for just a gallon of paint. :o I'll never be painting a red car , I can tell ya that..
-
That's not good to hear about the red because I am goind with a dark crimson red!!!
I'll have to start saving just for the paint!!
-
yellow, red, orange and browns are very over priced. white, black, silver and blue are the cheapest.
-
oh...yeah...I wanted to paint my Fiero electric blue maybe, or gunmetal grey...can't decide!!
Sorry Doug kinda strayed off topic and hijacked your thread!!!
I'm done now!!
-
actually what you meant was, DOUG, you now have the paint, we have been waiting for near 2 years for this moment now spray this thing so we can enjoy it lol.
-
Took the words right outta my mouth!!
-
Patience, my young padawan. Control your feelings or they will lead you into the Dark Side.
the paint will fly , it will , once in the air.
it was this time last year I got to meet Fred for the first time.

-

-
wow Doug im amazed at the work you have done, its been a while since i have looked at this thread but im really regretting that. Keep up the great work.
-
thanks ,
all the small parts are painted and looks really good. we had to paint them in my garage, the paint booth had a 50's truck in it getting baked. . the bottom side of the deck lid took forrrever to prep, but it turned out very nice and wont need color sanded and buffed.
I'll try to get some pics up soon. tomorrow is the fenders + moving all the parts to my shop.
-
Looking forward to seeing this!!!!!
I'm excited for you.
-
That's an awesome pictures. You should do the same once you sand and buff it. If you did this as a career that would make for a good advertisement picture.
-
Looking good Doug. It's going to be one sweet ride when it's done. ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
here's some more pics. most all still needs 1200 wet sanded and buffed. but it should look like a black mirror when its done
done

needs sanded, but still looks very good. no dirt or junk in it.

-
Those mirrors are not sanded yet?
-
Nope... if you take your time on the small parts , you wont need to color sand them.
-
man. I didn't know paint could look that good without sanding and buffing. I am sure it has a lot to do with the quality of the work under the paint too right?
-
That looks awesome :) One amazing car in the works here :)
Can't wait to see it finished :)
-
You my good sir are one talented SOB!!! (meant in the highest honors).... ;D

on each coat of paint if you let it set 20min. and 1000 grit wet sand each coat , there wont be any orange peel. clear doesnt get very much peel to it. it flows out on what its laying on. the paint is what make 95% of the peel look. then you need to wet sand the clear to make it smooth.
-
the BROWN truck stoped :D

got my gauges back from Daniel @ gauge marks www.gaugemarks.com
Daniel thay look great, I kind of like having a 1 of 1 cluster. it keeps my car different from everybody else.
thanks for your hard work.
-
Looks good Doug, things are starting to come together pretty good now. You planning on having it ready for the summer season?
-
Thats really cool. Doug. Was that your idea or just a good surprise?
-
Daniel had the Idea but me and a few others on another forum helped fine tune them to look like this. Daniel had the clock idea and we suggested the gold marks in the German font.
I think he did a really good job on them.
I think a W72 on the clock would look good too.
I hope its in the trailer headed to NY this year. but I still have a lot to do , and not going to rush it.
-
That's pretty cool indeed!!
-
Wow---- The German Letters really set that off.
Now I want to see them lit up in the dark.
Now I "have to" keep watching this thread.
-
Those came out AWESOME
-
Very cool.I like.
-
Doug,
Thanks for the props. I appreciate all the great comments on these! I'm sure they're gonna look great in your car. I'd love to have some pics of the final install . You're the only one that has a set of these. I don't even have a set for display LOL :o
Your car is an excellent example of what these gauges were designed for; a mostly stock high-end restomod. Perfect!
Thanks again!
Daniel
-
Awesome work, Gauge marks, and Doug, this build (and the 79) has served as the motivation i need for my project...
Very talented work indeed!

-
Very impressive. You do great work Doug,I don't care what the other guys say about you.
-
doug nice guages!! how much did they set you back if you dont mind me asking? also nice job on the paint. just wait until they are wet sanded and buffed up!! they will look 400 times better than they do now. nothing like black glass.
-
Doug, you are my idol. Love the work!!!!
-
doug nice guages!! how much did they set you back if you dont mind me asking?
the price is in what you want to spend. he fixed anything wrong with it calibrated the speedo fixed the clock so on.
call or email Daniel he'll hook ya up. or you can buy the marks and do it yourself. he has a how to video on you tube.
its some money , for a nice look to a restored dash. it'll look 100% better them the old faded marks.
I'll do the 79 with new marks in the fall.
-
i think it looks perfect like that.
-
I love going through this thread. Usually each Sunday I re-read the intire thread.
Doug---- thank you for sharing so much detail.
I'm looking forward to the rest of your process.
Thank You Much

those look great! i have to get the tach on mine rebuilt. it stopped working a few years ago, yet i have a signal going to it, so i ASSume the problem is in the tach itself...
-
Anymore progress?
Sorry---- I just get anxious!!!!!
-
I'm going to be like KeePat's build and just post teaser pic till its done. HEHEHE.
its a long way from being done, I'll tell ya that.
-
keepat didnt hold out on us like you are dude. keep holding out and im going to have to start working on one of my t/a's man. its easier just to sit back and watch, then i feel like i accomplished something too lol.
-
Seriously Doug. Some of us are taking notes and now it's like you skipped out on us. I need more pictures,MAN. I'm freaking out over here.
-
work is slow for me right now. so I'm not dumping a bunch of money into it right now.
just ordered 2.5k of interior parts and tires.
still working on the bumpers. but I did get the paint on the metal dash area, no pics and its all masked off right now.
I hope to have the front and back window jams painted soon so I can get the glass back in and masked off.
plus its still cold. as soon as we get 50* nights the rest will be painted. the body is ready to go and I have it baged so I can power wash my garage the day before its painted.
once I get some new pics that looks like progress I post um up. Im doing a lot to it, but a pic wont show it.
-
I know that doug im just busting your hump bud. im light year behind you anyhow with my pace but then again i just got mine so maybe i can catch up soon enough ;) eventually they will all be done right........hit me up on the pm about that stuff we talked about around a month or so ago.
-
here is the last time you'll see it this color. next week sometime I'll get it back into roller, so I can get it in and out of the garage. and re-clean so the bumpers and hood can be painted.

-
What's wrong with the color it is? Mine has been like that for two years and it's really starting to grow on me. If I get finger prints on it I just sand it down a little and re spray.
-
Im growing tired of this color, really quick.. I still need to hang paper to the floor and mask off the inside of the drivers door.
pull and hang the doors for paint. SUNDAY is the day.
-
I could drive out there and help you. Maybe learn a thing or two. But I know how you like secrets
-
thanks for the pics doug
-
OK for sure this is the last time looking like this. paint tonight or in the morn.
the blue tape is spots I dusted some primer on where I wet sanded a little to far and found filler ( oops) a little touch up wet sand and it ready to seal.
going to try it with the doors on , I dont want to . but there a pain to put on without chips. if I dont like it , we'll pull them wet sand the jams and fix them.

looks like ppg ncp 2004 sealer?
-
Looking really good there Doug!!
I'll definitely be picking your brain when I get to the body work on the 80 Firebird! I can only hope I can come close to the results you have here.
-
thanks Brian, you can do it. just remember , what ever your primer looks like before the sealer is what the paint will look like.
so when you wet sand that last coat of primer make it slick as glass.
-
by the way ,, paint/clear IS ON!!
-
wheres the PICS!!
-
Been reading and rereading your thred now just going to wait for the pictures. Hope they're up soon. Great work.

There is nothing more I can say about the work you without always sounding like an interior decorator with my vocabulary. So with that said. Can you answer a question for me? Why is that part by your ball joints not the same color and the rest of your control arms?
-
not to but in, but thats how they look from factory , my guess is they dipped them in black ?
-
Correct
-
So they are bare metal then dipped in black and the tips are left bare?
-
So they are bare metal then dipped in black and the tips are left bare?
Yep, otherwise they'd be dipping the ball joint.
-
Thats coming together...rapidly! Can't lie, I am jealous of how clean that will all be when finished, couldn't ever drive it!
-
when finished, couldn't ever drive it!
sorry to say , Im not. it'll be a trailer queen for a while.
-
when finished, couldn't ever drive it!
sorry to say , Im not. it'll be a trailer queen for a while.
Thats understandable. Gonna have to get it in some of those huge indoor car shows like the ones at the Midwest Express Center show in Milwaukee or something
-
Doug, from the pics of your car in paint I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Did you paint the car in your home garage or home shop (looks that way in the pictures)? If so, did you vent out with floor fans? I also noticed that you left the doors on for painting yet the trunk lid, hood and fenders are off. I've been doing all the reading I can about paint procedure and many have stated to paint the car once it is all together. I would appreciate some insight to your methods because what I've seen, your procedures have made her absolutely beautiful.
-
yes it was painted in my garage. I have an exhaust fan on the wall, up by the roof line.
well I was going to take the doors off for paint. but this door being the hardest/heaviest door to hang without getting paint chips/ scratches. I just left them on the car. I did have all the sheet metal on the car already. so the doors should not need moved.
if your doing full paint on your car. the fenders need to be off so the area of the fender behind the door is painted. with my fenders off I could paint the door hinge area . and they came out slick as glass in the door jams.
if you paint a car assembled there is alot of areas that are not getting paint on them , just overspray that will look and feel rough and dry.
some people will jam the car , doors, hood and trunk. put it all together then paint it assembled. but the bad about that is you must cover the jams or the overspray will ruin the finish. then your wet sanding and buffing the jams. that sucks.
you'll also have a tape or paint line you'll need to blend at the jam where you tape off the jams. that suck too.
-
You can avoid paint lines with " soft edging " or " back masking " as for wet flatting and buffing........... youre better off doing this whilst the car is still " masked " as this avoids the need to clean up so much and helps it all stay away from areas you dont want.
Just adding Mr Whaletail. ;)

-
Doug, the quality of your workmanship amazes me. The car is looking amazing.
-
wet sanded with 1000 grit. and going to go over it again with 2000 grit to take the 1000 marks out of it. it could be buffed now but to take the 1000 marks out it will buff that mutch better.
-
Looks great dude. Should I or Shouldn't I? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
-
I appreciate the info. I've re-read the thred and perhaps I missed it but how many coats of base coat did you put on and did you sand between coats? I'm trying to learn as much as I can from your skills so I hope you don't mind the questions. The sanding, (1000 and 2000 then buffing) is done before the clear coat? and clear coat is not sanded (is this correct?). I'm very interested in your venting for I've gone to see some paintbooths, including a couple of downdraft booths and what you have accomplished in your garage is superior to what I have seen (your paint has such great depth). Definite illustration of your skill. I've seen hoods painted both hung as well as laid flat. What is your preference? Now I know that all your trim pieces and other body parts will be painted seperately, but will you do them at the same time or will they be painted at different times or as space permits? Also, even though you are painting at different times do you mix the total amount of paint at the same time, then store and use as needed or mix fresh each time before you paint? Just wondering how you maintain your color consistancy (suppose perfect measuring each time would work). As stated, new to this so trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks again for the previous info, it will definitely help.
-
you wet sand and buff the clear to get it to shine and look deep.
I'll hang the hood. it helps to keep the crap in the air from landing on it.
all the parts are done , and at the same time.
my paint is a solid base, 3 coats. there is no mix to get the color, so I can paint parts when ever and get the same color with out mixing it all at the same time.
the correct color black is called starlight black , I dont like the color it has way to much white and I think blue added to it.
my car sitting beside a starlight car , the starlight will look dark brown.
if you use a mixed color you should get the car painted asap so you dont have any color differences in the parts.
-
I've been looking for starlight black but have not been able to find it. I would appreciate a brand and paint number if you could share with me please. Thanks in advance.
-
Do you add a thinner to the paint? (sorry, this was the mixing I as refering to)
-
SWEET!
-
its a reducer you add to the paint . lacquer thinner was used on the old lacquer paints ( not made anymore )
paint pt# http://www.78ta.com/paintcode.php the part #'s are for lacquer paint. your paint shop can cross the # to the paint used today.
-
Looks great dude. Should I or Shouldn't I? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
that up to you. I know black shrinks worse than any color. it may need cut, buffed and polished again if it wasnt 2000 sanded. if you do it, wash it with dish soap and wipe it down with wax-grease remover. the wax on the car will plug up the sand paper.
-
Your car looks absolutely gorgeous :) Wish I had a black Trans Am like this :) I understand that you want it to be a trailer queen for a while :)
Way to perfect :)
-
As always Doug, absolutely top notch work! Looking forward to seeing it finished!
-
thanks Daniel, but its your gauges that will make this ride pop.
-
buffed a small area today. oooooooooooo baby thats nice. and its not even polished yet. looks like deep black chrome.
no orange peel in this pic. once its polished you'll be able to read the words on the camera lense

-
black mirror ahhh i remember those days. ben there done that get out your california duster and take it with you anywhere the car goes because you will need it all the time trust me.
-
Doug, you need to scrub your hands better. Lol. No I'm joking. I have never seen paint like that in person. That is pure excellence. Número UNO.
-
looking good doug.
-
thanks , right now it still has a milky haze to it but the polish will take that out.
-
Wow, its really turning out nicely!
-
Nice work Doug.
-
Amazing work. Great job
-
Like always Doug, you have out done yourself. Looks Amazing!
-
Wow Doug...that's really professional work....very very nice. Since I'll be painting my own, You give me faith that I may be able to fix my less than stellar shooting. I've done some nice work on small projects and I'm a little tense (to say the least!) about doing a whole car.. Thanks for the photos...they're like mini lessons!
Rick C.
-
looking VERY nice!
-
polished it today. there is something in the paint. I looks peppered, if you know what I mean. it looks great at 5' but up close it look like dust. I didnt see it untill it was polished... Im so pissed right now.
if this wasnt a show finish I would let it go. so its coming off and going to start over.
-
sorry to hear this.
Sir---- you can get her to a show finish.
Just a little more time and effort.
You are extremely dedicated and you expect only the best of yourself.
I personally admire your dedication.
Side note: meet my neighbor 7 houses down for the first time. Great guy---He has a '76 455-HO with just over 50,000 miles on it.
Now that makes me smile like a child!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doug---- your dedication is inspiring to me personally and to the 100's who read this thread.

it turns out the DBC 9700 ppg black isnt reduced 1 to 1. its 1 to .25 its the only PPG paint that is reduced this way. all others are 1 to 1.
if it would of been cleared hours later it would of been fine. the extra amout of reducer that went into the sealer was still there and the clear trapped it , it builds up pressure and pops thru the clear.
So PPG didnt comp me the new paint and clear. but the paint shop I more or less live at. charged me all the stuff at cost.
yall would not believe the markup on paint.
just got the body repainted tonight. fenders and trunk next. and still have the hood and bumpers to do.
so after this weekend I should be back on track.
-
FYI ,, if you ever use PPG check the date on the bottom of the can. my clear was 2 years and 3 months old.
buffed & polished this is the right quarter.

WOW! That is amazing! Great job Doug.
-
Sweet Doug. The wife doesn't believe it's a black car. She says it has to be a mirror. She wants to see that the car is black and that you simply perfected the shine. Lol. Woman....what can you do about them?
-
Look at all the money you are saving Doug. No need for mirrors in the house now. Next time you put on the fancy, go out for the evening duds you just have to go to the garage and check your look in your quarter. I have never seen anything like your work before, absolutely awesome.

looking good doug

Looks amazing Doug. Your going to have one amazing collection of cars once your done with all of them. What ever happened to that early 2nd gen you were gonna buy off TAC. Did you end up passing on that one.
-
Looks great Doug.

I dont what to do another full rebuild on a t/a again, and that one needed alot of lovein. the cost is just too high, paint and interior work is bad enough. when I'm ready to looks for 70-73 I'll buy one done. ( it'll be alot cheaper that way)
-
Haha, thats what my dad keeps telling me also. Quit wasting your time and money trying to do a car yourself, buy something that is almost finished and you'll come out ahead.
-
Doug, man you are doing a great job. I miss spraying cars, birds for sure. Looking through your posts remind me when I did my first T/A. Wet sanding those back fenders was soooo fun. Seeing all the hard work is so worth it! Unfortunately after my friend was killed in a car accident I never painted again. He had a great little shop to work in and was set up right for the DIY'r. I can't afford to build a facility to do this so I never got back into it.
My first car was silver. I never had professional training. My friend wanted me to do it for a living saying I had a knack for doing it. I guess maybe I should have but oh well. Anyways, this car below I did when I was 19 years old. First time spraying base/clear. I too sprayed the car with doors on and had super glassy jambs when done. Nothing I hate more than a decent paint job only to see or worse feel overspray!

Not wetsanded yet.

DUDE I almost painted this one like yours. but didnt know what to do about the bird kit... that combo rules.
-
DUDE I almost painted this one like yours. but didnt know what to do about the bird kit... that combo rules.
Thanks! I actually had more compliments on that car than any other. It was simply stunning. I had matching red interior too. That silver color was actually the same hue as the factory but had more metalflake in the paint that gave it almost a pearl look under the right light. If I can remember back that far the paint code came up as a 91 Dodge truck color. Funny thing is that I don't ever remember seeing that shade of silver on any Dodge before. Then again, Dodge never made a vehicle with such sexy body lines as a 2nd gen bird!
-
BTW, spraying silver was the hardest thing I ever did. That car above had the front bumper redone 3 times and one fender twice because of either tiger striping or metallic pooling.
-
Doug, did either of your cars have this much bondo on the fenders? On mine all four corners were covered in it. It was under the factory sealer too. I met a GM engineer at the T/A nationals that stopped and really adimired my bird. I showed him pictures of me redoing it and I made a comment about the bondo. He said by late '78 Pontiac had so many panels made up they were using them all instead of throwing back bad ones. He said the die used in makeing the panels were well worn after 10 years. Panels they would have tossed back in early 70's they were using in late 70's and certainly using them by 81! By the end of the 2nd gen life they had stopped making them and were already set to make the 3rd gens. I was just curious if anyone else found this much bondo in good metal like this.
-
my 79 (new) repro quarter is covered in mud. quarter skins are junk , once you get it on they are so wavy. but the hole car has it. but with dings and dents pulled, its not a 1/8" thick . really I'd say its no more then a 1/16" thick.
guys that brag , or want a no filler car. dont know what they are talking about.
the f-body is one of the most waviest car out there.
I talked to a guy at the NATS too. he worked in the decal area. he said by 77 they had a body shop to take them to for rework.
-
that would explain the lead i found covering a gash in my 77's door that had only one original coat of paint on it lol
-
I found lead in my 77's door , up by the handle. and my first 79 had green filler in the lead seam at the quarter & roof and brass brazing behind the trim at the door glass & sail panel.
-
i think i found brazing in mine too around there if i remember right.
-
I do believe mine had the quarters replaced way back then. Some one must have wrecked the car early on. It had blue quarters that had brazing/lead filler on a black car and then painted black over the blue. I was told by the shop it was an old technique.
-
Excellent work Doug!
-
thanks guys, but I have a big change of plans with this t/a.
I'll keep it black, but going to take it to another level. keeping a stock look but not stock.
I dont want to play this car off as a SE car. so over the next 2 months you'll be seeing some changes to it.
thats all I'll say right now about it , other then needing to sell the 15x7' to help buy tiers for my 17's .
-
you making a BAN1?
-
LOL
-
the ban 1 cars have 18's i think douggie may be building a doug1off?
-
Oh come on now. 18/17...blah b;ah blah...doesn't have to be 100% matching. Doug said 17 is the biggest he would go didn't he.....or was it 22's....DUB baby.
-
the ban 1 cars have 18's i think douggie may be building a doug1off?
I didnt say anything about a ban car. did I ? if I wanted a clone or copy of another car I would just do the SE.
plus I dont have 4k for the rims.
-
It will still be a tribute to the SE. just not dressed up to be an SE.
-
It will still be a tribute to the SE. just not dressed up to be an SE.
Gotta' admit I'm now confused...since an SE is just an appearance package anyway :D
-
lol ,, yes your right. but its going to be the look of stock that will be modified.

-
LOL Eroc !! ;D
Nothing wrong with a Chevy........ good enough for later Poncho's, besides you cant argue with the power that you're gonna have at your disposal Mate.
Im sure as you blow that Mustang into the weeds, he's not gonna be thinking " i hope thats not a chevy in there.... " ;)
-
Looks great Doug :) are you planning on some silver SE decals instead maybe? :)
-
ask me no questions , and I'll tell you no lie's . :-X
but no, not silver. thats the Hitmans t/a. I cant copy that one off look. I want my own look. like my white and gold SE.
I think the look I'm going for will even impress the purist.
-
I think all your birds look great :) and you did great on this one too :)
-
Ok, question;) Will it involve some custom decals of some sort?
-
Yes maybe some of Sir English Firebird's album covers made up as decals ;) lol .Keep up the good work Doug car is looking good.

where did you get the hoses? i saw some at ames but was not sure if they had the correct gm stamps on them for 78. are the ones you have good for 78 too or are those only 77 correct gm stamps only, either way i like them. like the ribs on the heater hoses too, not cheap stuff.
-
OK , now... I've been having problems with the paint.
long story short-- it was bad hardener in the clear. after painting test pieces the last 2 weeks and changing to another air system. then taking a part to a paint booth in town. and getting the same results every time. PPG came to the conclusion it was the hardener crystallizing in the clear , making it look metallic. its also not as hard on the car as it should be by now. the polished pics I posted days ago. it has a flat dead look to it now. it will polish back up but doesnt stay long. I know black will shrink over the next few months , but in 2,3 days. dont think so.
PPG is making all right. so no worries. if I didnt do alot of tests on parts to prove it wasnt my building , air system or anything wrong I did, PPG would not of stepped up with the hell-of-a deal that gave me.
FYI -- when you go to buy paint/clears what ever . Look at the dates on the bottoms of the cans. there is also a batch # on the can. have the store check the # to be sure it wasnt a recalled #. they dont get them all out of the system.
the rep is coming out to see how thick the paint is on the car. to know if it need stripped or if it can just go into a oven to be cured out. then we'll dust new paint on and clear it.
-
wow. What a pain. Glad you are getting it all worked out.
-
Doug--- you have any updates ?
-
PPG rep came out today and tested the paint, and looked it over. Soooooooooo I guess I good to go to paint it all again.
-
What did the rep say ?
T/A Kid, LOL you a bad man !!!!
-
said it was the hardener for the clear crystallizing. he told me he had only seen this once before, more then 10 years ago.
in order to get such a long shelf life from it . they put nitrogen in the cans . the nitrogen leeked out and the air caused it to age faster. my can of hardener was about 2.5 years old . shelf life is 3 years.
they told me they will give me my money back for all the PPG stuff I used...
or ,,OR..
comp me all the PPG stuff for the 68 bird. that from epoxy ----------to---------- clear
(up to the $$ amount spent on the 77)
its up to me on what I want to do..
-
Well, thats somewhat disappointing, but sounds like exceptional customer service; so, I'd call it a win!
-
I agree very good of PPG , nice to see that some customer relations are still alive !
-
I've been watching the time you have put into that fine ride of yours and I'm glad that you have been given options by PPG. It's impossible to put a dollar value on all the work you have done as well as the work left to do or redo. If there is a possitive I could add it would be that you love the work and it keeps you out of trouble. Best of luck on the direction you choose and I'm sure which ever way you decide, it will be another ride that most of us will wish we had in our garages.
-
thanks, the ppg rep and the paint store is working to make it right. all they can do is comp all the paint / clear.
the rep told me , if he was to have the PPG corporate office get involved. I would not get JACK.... because they would say I didnt have a certified painter or paint area to work on the car. and it wouldnt matter if there product was bad or not.
so Im not going to complain about the loss in labor. the rep and paint store will comp me 1800.00 of materials for my 68 and gave me what I need to redo the 77. that makes up for the loss in time and labor I guess..
-
$1800 for the paint ? Is that what its cost you ? OMG.
-
$1800 for the paint ? Is that what its cost you ? OMG.
yes , in all PPG materials used on the car. just not the paint/clear.
-
Im speechless.
For once perhaps. Still speechless.
-
It's cool that you showed how much in paint and materials you have in your car. When you add up every single thing from primer, sandpaper, filler and such it really adds up. Back in the mid 90's when I painted my first bird I stripped it down and painted everything. I had right around $1000 in materials. People thought I was nuts when I spent that much.
-
Doug - I'm just getting caught up on this thread. WOW, nice job. I think you have another trophy winner in the making. Can't wait to see the finished product. Love the black paint. It will be stunning!! Your craftsmanship is incredible.
-
I just want to know whats taking you so long anyways...I figured you'd be driving it by now... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Yeah Doug, you already painted it twice. The third time should be a breeze. >:D
-
I just want to know whats taking you so long anyways...I figured you'd be driving it by now... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
you didnt get the memo.... he was driving it, and it was a road hazard for other drivers.... too many rubber neckers so he has to detune and modify the color a pigment.....haha
-
sorry guys . got some family stuff right now. so the 77 is on the back burner. I'll check in everyday , but the car is on hold for now.
-

Oh man, I hope everything is OK.
-
$1800 for the paint ? Is that what its cost you ? OMG.
If you really want to go into cardiac arrest, look at Dupont or House of Kolors cost. easily double if not close to triple that. Materials are not cheap like most assume.

Sir English is just in shock over our prices... the products are much cheaper in the UK

I am, for that price i could shoot my car from start to finish in HOK.
I know when i was last over i went into a PPG distributors with Jeff and was gobsmacked at the prices, i f only there was a way of shipping it across cheaply................ we have a huge choice of paint here in the Uk and many painting systems.
Doug, sorry to hear about the family stuff, i hope it resolves itself.
-
I just got a qt of urethane primer & hardener today , to finish coat the body work on the hood and 2 bumpers. 48.00 :P
the last of the parts that needed done, are ready for wet sanding , sealed and paint. maybe by the weekend.

Eastwood's Ceramic Engine Paint GM Corp Blue
Item #777 51626 ZP
its hard as a rock.

Looks nice bub! I had to mod my stove as well. all that work and you cant even see it in there.
-
the paint looks glossy did you apply with a spray gun, would be nice if they had it in a rattle can.
-
You could buy a Preval sprayer from an auto paint supply store to spray that paint with. Fill the jar with paint mixed for spraying, and spray like a rattle can. They work great. Here's a link to a Preval sprayer, so you can see what it looks like: http://www.amazon.com/Preval-Sprayer-PVE267-Spray-Gun/dp/B000TRL9PY

looking good doug. nice job on the heat shield.

once the 400 was in , I didnt like the look of the brake lines being cleaned up and painted. so I put in a call to inline tube for new brake and trans lines.
another set back , but will look a lot better with the new lines. if anyone wants my old lines 4 free come get them.
-
Doug where did you buy your lines from hopefully not inline tube. I bought a set for a customers 79 403 T/A from inline and didn't fit right they swear they are correct. After going back and forth on the phone for a week. They took them back and never credited my credit card has been almost a mouth now and no money be careful. By the way the car looks awesome.
-
will those fit a 78 400 auto, i am wanting to redo my lines, if so i can take them off your hands, if not no biggie.

I got mine from inline tube and didnt have a problem til the rear disc.... but after I bought them and 4 years later went to install them... i noticed they were different... they asked for pics and I sent some and they sent me new ones.... that fit
-
well with them being repro , they may as well fit like all the rest. I have a tool if needed to help the install.
I'll let yall know how they fit.
Im not going to have this car done in time anyway , so I'll just take my time , do it right , and enjoy it next summer.
parts I have ordered to lower it are on back order or something :-\

Looks good Doug.

let me know what y'all think of this color.... Lori and I wanted it blue from the start. just thought when I sold it , a Black ta would sell alot quicker then any other color. so now that its not for sale and when I picked up the new paint I got the marty blue and added pearl into the color. the pearl really makes the blue pop and change colors as you walk around the car. we really like it.
here is a few pics. I really hope I dont get doged for a 78 color on a 77. Bones saw it last night and I think likes it.

-
It looks lovely Doug :) That color was just beautiful on a beautiful car :)
-
:o.......... ;D
-
was wondering why your pic was of a marty on agta
-
Looks good Doug I like the blue.
-
Wow!! Doug that looks great. What decals are you going to use? I wonder what the gold would look like on that blue.
-
I really like it Doug!!!
WOW!!
very impressive!!
-
thanks guys, we really like it.
Ryan, I have the blue bird kit, but Im really thinking about going with the SE kit . I think that black and gold would look really good on the blue.
I also have stencils to paint the kit on . Hell Bandit on TAC made one up for me.

That's just incredible Doug ! I love the color but I may be biased lol. I can hardly imagine how many hours went into making her that gorgeous
-
That's B-E-A-UTIFUL Doug!! Always loved the Marty's!
-
Doug the car looks amazing I think there are way to many clone black T/A's IMHO. I like the blue a lot better. When your done using the stencils you wanna sell them????
-
the stencils are a one time use. stick um on. then paint , mask what you just painted, peel off for the next color , spray that and peel the rest off and clear it. it'll get ripped taking it off.
-
Oh I am still new to painting thanks for the info.
-

How much does it cost to get those stencils made? :)
-
oh snap..... ive been debating on sending you a car...but then again ive been debating on keeping the car... haha
-
wow that was quick looking good doug
-
threads like this really make me want to build another car , i been thinking of a first gen w/ls1 6 speed
-
how about another 2nd gen.... cheap car so you can mod it all you want...
-
how about another 2nd gen.... cheap car so you can mod it all you want...
i already have a 2nd gen lol
-
i would go with the marty decals 100%, i think they look killer.
-
Very, very nice!!!! I like the idea of a little pearl in it but with the Marty blue hue. I did a simular thing years ago when painting one silver. Put just enough pearl to give it the pop factor. Everyone always loved it.
-
I am priviledged to have seen her up close and personal. As nice as the pictures look she's even better in person. This marty blue with pearl is gorgeous! Phenominal job Doug. :o I'd go blue decals IMHO.
Glad Doug posted pics. Mine turned out about the same as at the world's largest railroad museum ;)
-

WoW pic's pleas
-
I say gold, if you are going to use your yearone 17's I think you need to pull some gold into somewhere else.
-
When I bought my Marty car, it had gold decals and stripes on it, and IMHO it looked horible.
-
yeah i am not liking the blue with gold idea. I think the decals like Hitman put on his car would look pretty sweet though! But you can't go wrong with the factory decals on that color.
-
if I use the 17's Im going to change them to argent grey. or not paint them at all and clear powder coated.
or restore the Rally II wheels .
-
I was looking at it last night with some gold pinstriping. it does have its own look to it, it's not that bad . but I think I'll pass on the gold stuff on this car.
Ive seen gold wheels , but not to sure on them either. I'll put a 17 on it later and get a pic.
-
the grey 17's would look pretty good on there probably. I would do those with silver or grey striping if you do SE striping on it.
-
I have the blue striping , to go with the blue bird kit.
-
I have the blue striping , to go with the blue bird kit.
I think that will look awesome :)
-
I'd say the gold 17's look good with the blue. Plus I really dont what to drop any more coin into it.

-
they go very nicely with the blue mate
-
It actually looks better then I thought. Maybe the gold won't look too bad with the blue after all. Thats the one good thing about decals, if you don't like the look after you do it you can always take them off.
-
They would look good in black too...... Gold just looks disco-ish but the funds are always a factor too.....
-
The gold doesn't look as bad as I thought. Looks really good, but I wonder if with all of the gold decals will it be too much?
-
Wow that blue looks amazing, good job Doug!! 8)
-
I really like the Blue color you chose..very nice.
I was considering almost the same color.
I would have painted the wheels to match the body color.
Gold looks nice though.
-
Cool colour Doug, she really pops but ive seen a Marty with those rims on (gold) and i wasnt impressed
my 5 cents...gone up due to Aussie dollar dropping :)
-
Doug she looks great!
-
And YES go with the gold 17s for sure silver will quiet the car down too much.
Like the time I chose to NOT get my front teeth gold capped, I regret that today.
Hee Hee
-
well sence Saturday Night Fever came out in 1977 . I guess the gold wheels will be OK. and just wait till next NATS. and see what I have on when I get out of it at the teck line...

It's not Blue it's the new Black.
-
Rick, I dont want to maintenance the black paint. as I would want it looking mirrored all the time.
walking around the NATS I looked at every black car. none looked good to me. other then the queens. it scratches so easy. plus the plan was to be blue from the start.

I talked to him on the phone for a 1/2hr. the guy seems to know his stuff. I should have my front speaker in a day or so.
on the rear Im sending him my old one so he can install the speaker box mount and correct plug on it. so I dont have to cut my speaker harness.
-
Hey doug you are making amazing progress on your car. Looks incredible.
I got my speakers from turnswitch too. If you haven't already sent him your rear speaker its easy to mod the speaker so the muff holder fits into it. Just use a short piece of an old ink pen or rubber hose to stop the drill from going all the way thru into the speaker. Also, if you put the bracket into the speaker like it would normally go and apply a little pressure it will dimple exactly where you need to drill for the screw. I just used a soldering iron to switch the connectors.
-
ok thanks, I got the front speaker in but didnt send off for the rear yet. hes going to restore my 8 track and stereo too plus do the rear speaker mod for a really good price. also doing a mp3 jack in the back of it.
-
