Nice welds!!!
The car is coming along nicely
thanks im a certified welder, and ppg certified painter, and ase certified, and well you get the idea. lol
-
i cannot wait to see it in paint
me either! its been so long since it was brown
-
i assume your using ppg paint on it? do you prefer dupont over ppg or ppg over dupont?
I myself prefer dupont over ppg I like how the mettallic's lay better vs ppg. however i love how the ppg clear lays compared to duponts.
-
i prefer ppg base i used dupont when i worked for gm shop wasnt afan of there base but the clear was very impressive. but i will be using deltron 2000 base and dc 4000 clear, i assume your also a body man do you have to switch over to waterborne soon as we do in pa?
-
I am an X body man... still do it at night though. yes waterborne is already mostly here. the price of paint now is super rediculous compared to a year ago.
I have worked with all kinds of paints
sherwin williams, martin seynor, deltron, trans star, ppg, dupont and nason. house of kolor, spies hecker, and a few other off name brands that i will refuse to use ever again.
Thats funny that you prefer the ppg base and then dupont clear exact opposite of me. now the dupont clear holy cow can it look just deep deep deep I just hate how it sprays... however im used to it so all is good.
-

Looks good Steve.
-
looks good man. whats up with your door you dont want to use? i do have a good drivers door here is it dings or is it rust you dont like about your door? i know mine has some dings but if i recall correctly its rust free.
-
thanks fred.
as for the door it had lil rust, but mainly thats alot of filler im not happy about this car has littl body work done to it
-
my doors are about the same. if you find a door that doesnt need filler to make it straight , that door came from a car that lived its life under a tarp. even the doors when new had waves in them.
I think you did a fine job.
as long as filler isn't used to fill holes, and your using it to make it straight. that's what it's for.
-
this is true. how bad was your rust and did you treat it at all?
-
Mine? I had very little rust on the inside around the seem sealer at the bottom of the doors, a wire wheel cleaned it all off. washed it , DP, glass filler to make it look like seem sealer.
-
i bhlasted the bottom of door and filled seam with 3m panel glue the stuff we use to install door skins ans somtimes 1/4 panels
-
THANKS HAMMER
-
keep up the great work man, this is fantastic! keep posting the pics as well. we all appreciate this.

Doing a good jod Steve.
keep it up but don't rush it!!!!
-
it was going slow before because of lack of funds, i no longer have to pay for the lawyer so theres an extra two hundred an hour goung towards the car
-
I know I'm a little late, but that looks like it is really coming along! Good job!
-
thanks everyone for you comments!! makes me wanna get it done even sooner
-
oh yes them wonderful boxes that say pui on them i have gotten alot of them this year too. such a great feeling. i remember only around 9 months ago when my car looked like yours does currently. once you get over the hurdle of paint and glass back in man does it come together really really fast even at a snails pace every single thing you will do, will only make it that much better. GREAT JOB!!!
-
You know I kept looking and I could tell something was wrong but I just couldn't put my finger on it, then it hit me your shop was too clean you need to get some more stuff on the floor so you can get your air lines tangled up ;) just kidding Steve the shop and car look great!! Thanks for the pictures.
-
yeah really thats whats wrong. I cannot keep my shop 10% as clean as yours but then again i have a crap load of parts and on top of that 4 birds so 4x the headaches you have going on.
-
lol its getting pretty messy got another bird in one corner a 400 still on frome in another corner and piles of parts everywhere
-

cant wait . you going to pant in the morning when the humidity is low? I use a dehumidifier and turn on the heat to get the humidity down.
there's nothing worse then that clear running south on it.
-
yea gonna try to have it ready fri night and spray it saturday morning,
-
Your project is coming along great and that dash looks fantastic!
What dash cap manufacturer is that and who'd you order yours from?
That's really some great motivation to do mine.
Keep those pics coming.
-
thanks i ordered it fron npd the texture of it isnt right though which really bugs me but it will have to do untill somday when they make a repro dash
-
Looks great though Steve. After a while, you wont even notice it. I did the same thing and was ticked off as well. I figured NPD would have the correct one but they dont. By the time I noticed it, the glue was dry.
-
i seen it befor hand but figired it still would look better than the cracks, i wish the glove box door matched thats the only thing that shows the difference
-
I know it's a little late now but they make a Sem, texture paint that you can buy that is very close to the right texture if anyone runs into this problem again,by the way I'm amazed at how fast you're moving on your car good job.
-
It is definitely looking good! That will look great in brown!
-
IS IT SATURDAY YET! ;D

-
very nice transformation there.
-
Or maybe a very nice "transam-formation" ? ;D
-
lo,l i put t-top seals in today and cant get the t-tops in right now, super tight and sit above the roof any ideas?
-
What brand w/strips did you use?
If it's hot outside, I'd park it in the sun which would help soften up the rubber. And coat them with some rubber protectant that softens them too. Aerospace 303 Protectant seems to work well for that. I got mine at ACE hardware. Then maybe you can get the t-tops in and mash down the rubber some. That's all I know to do.
-
i wanna say metro brand but i will have to look
-
The tops will sit high for a bit once you get them in and latched down. I agree with Grandam73 that sitting in the sun may help as well.
-
i got them in and latched don but the tabs that hold the the tops in are barly catching like they need to be slid in more but i cant get them slid in anymore nohow maybe after a while i will be able to ?
-
Do you know what brand of seals you have?
-
mine did the same.
-
Do you know what brand of seals you have?
metro soft seal
-
mine did the same.
did it go away?
-
eventually.
-
Do you know what brand of seals you have?
metro soft seal
Thanks very much for checking. If you have Metro, the name is really "Metro Super Soft"...not metro soft seal. Soft Seal, or actually SoffSeal, is a different brand. Here's a comparison of Metro and SoffSeal t-top w/strips from a member here who had bought both and it was very informative. He was not happy with his Metros and found SoffSeals to be better: http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?topic=18170.15
-
mine did the same.
did it go away?
I made the glass fit. and have never taken it back out. I love t-tops , but hate the taking out & putting back in thing. I guess I just like the look
yes the tops are about flush with the roof now . in a few week it will be a year that they've been installed.
-
Never had em OUT? You mean, You have never set the cruise control at 75 MPH and sat up on the seat back with your head out the t-top? Wind in your face? Nothing more fun(and illegal).
-
never :'( sounds like fun ;) get your done Fred and lets get some others together for a fall cruse.
any one? any one? just think 5 MONTHS TILL Christmas. :'( :'( :P
then a hole bunch of this crap
( was going to be a pic of my wife's car covered in snow , but photo bucket is down :-\ )
-
im up for it, if i get er done lol
-
Looks good
-
ok i got all the new rubbers in gotta slam the doors to get them to close will this go away cause im gonna look stupid slaming my door all the time?
-
That takes a while as well.
-
I'm still slamming them :-\
-
is it easyer now than before/ i really have to slem them with two hands
-
Wait till you do it with the glass up. It is worse.
-
yea thats what im talking about its not to bad with the glass down but with them up forget it and they still leak where the roof seals meet the seals on the t-tops but whatever not like im gonna drive all the time anyways thanks for your input.
-
They get better with time. I stretched my roof seals a bit when i put them on to minimize the gaps. They still leaks but only a drip or 2 and Hey, They're T Tops. Havent seen a set that didnt drip somewhere at sometime anyway.
-
mine shuts with one good hand. and it is sealed up at the door glass now. as Fred said , takes time.

That is a good deal on some caps that look to be in nice shape.
Speaking of sweet deals on Ebay, I recently picked up a pair of NOS t-top covers, dated 79, never used, new inside and out, so no stains on the white part, for $60 delivered. I couldn't believe the guy had a buy-it-now of $50 :o . I was the 3rd viewer and didn't hesitate to buy ;D . I was afraid it was going to be a "too good to be true" thing, but I got them and they are the real deal.
Glad you're making progress on fixing your engine.
-
yea thought to good to be true also but when they got here they look new no dings at all one bird was a lil bit faded but easliy replaced , im taking it slow removing my engine it would be terible if i scratched that new paint!

i love it!! i have burnt around 600 gallons through it with no problem at all, no smell once so ever other than outside when it first turns on which still is minimal , smells like a diesel truck , and no smoke comes out the chiminey just heat i would recomend one to everyone, oil is easy to get, i put add on craigslist that i want it, and people tell me to come get it
-
a trucking company i do work for has one....it heats up their 15,000 sq foot facility. now they have to use fans to get the heat across the shop but still and its not hot in there but you know 50 ish
how much did that heater run? I use K-1 in my garage and anything has to be cheaper than that not to mention the smell.
-
i bought mine used, but was recently rebuilt for 950 ,and yea fuel oil is almost 3.00 a gallon so the 600 gallons of oil i used saved me 1800 and i still have around 400 gallons, and more offered to me weekly
-
well its in the car again!!
any one geuss what i forgot to do in the first pic lol

Judging from the location of the spill, it looks like you forgot to install the oil sender?
-

exactly lol, took me awhile to notice all the oil coming out to
and thanks fred ,hope this is the last time i put this motor in
-
homer, what kind of power is this 403 expected to have now? what all was done internally?
-
lol , I did the same thing when I primed the oil system on my 400 . shot me right in the leg.
-
homer, what kind of power is this 403 expected to have now? what all was done internally?
its all stock bored 20 over, makes it a 406 ,so not much more power than stock, im not planning on abusing this car so its fine with me ,when this is done im gonna build a toy that i can beat the he!! outa thinking ls1 6 speed? this correct resto stuff is not for me lol , i have always built custom cars/trucks and thats what i love to do.
-
well got the motor BACK OUT! again loaded up going back tomorrow, he gonna send crank balancer flywheel out to be balanced ,, it better be right this time!
-
good luck man. That sure is a lot of trouble you are being put through.
-
no doubt take this time to put a 502 in it
-
no doubt take this time to put a 502 in it
if it wasnt a numbers matching car i wouldnt have wasted my time with the 403 to begin with, i have a built 400 in the corner looking for a home, pretty soon i might just through it in there!
-
where in the EEEFFFFFF are the numbers located on a 403? i have searched and searched mine and cannot find any.
-

drivers side right behind power steering there is a knub that sticks out its stamped on there would take you a pic but i dont have an engine lol
-
What he said. They may be rusted away though. Hard to see sometimes
-
droped motor off today, i also located a factory dip stick tube i have been looking for.. of all places ..gm still makes them lol $8.42
-
well thats a good deal. thanks for the info on the numbers i'll have to pull off the pump and take a looksie.
-
you dont need to pull it its on the side of the block just below the head of the head
-
Yes, it's on a pad on the block below the 4A number on the front of the driver side head. It's on the side surface of the pad, not the top surface. At first I looked at the top surface and nothing was there. So, I wirebrushed the side surface and there it is. The numbers are really small. You got me curious about mine since I didn't know if the engine was original to my 79 TA, since the engine was rebuilt before I got the car. Turns out that the VIN does match...yay! :) . Here's a pic:

-
1.2.3... Here we go! Hope they got it right this time.

and do you guys think these wrinkes are ok the paper with it says there normal?
-
I don't think it will be a big deal you should be able to that out when you get it applied.
-
I'd try flatting it out with some heavy books or something before installing.................
So as to stop air from getting under there................
-
from what I'm hearing the bird kits are a crap shoot to get on good. take your time. and I guess PG is saying weight 6hours before pulling the new transfer off.
-
from what I'm hearing the bird kits are a crap shoot to get on good. take your time. and I guess PG is saying weight 6hours before pulling the new transfer off.
yea, the instruction sheet says three hour to wait, and that the wrinklels and bubbles are normal ,so i guess we will see i will take many pics of the wrinkled areas prior to install , so if there is a prob i have some proof it was like that
-
just got home from picking up a set a rally wheels for the ta got four wheels 6 rings and 8 centers for 100 bucks
-
Good deal!
-
(http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp90/NICKILYNN16/006-15.jpg)
Nothing screams FAST more than an F Body with the hood hinges standing straight up! Nice!
-
lol
-
Don't worry about the wrinkles. I pull the decals right out of the tube and slap them on. Use water and dish soap in a squirt bottle. You may want to mark with a marker on the top of the bird down the center to make sure you keep it in the middle of the hood crease. As per the way you have it laying on the hood in your pics you have it about 2" too high. Should have more of a gap around the scoop hole.
Once you have the hood where you can work on it make sure all dirt is off. Also, if you have something sticking up in the clear cut it off and sand it down smooth. I've seen guys have dirt in the hood thinking no big deal, the bird will cover it. Problem is that it more than likely won't cover it. Anyways, soap the hood up, peel the backer off and soap it up too and slap it on. You will be able to move it around until you get it where you want. Once you get it, start from the center of the bird and squeegy away working out to the corners over lapping your last move. If you don't get all of the water out or end up with dry bubbles don't worry because they will go away once it warms up and the sun hits it.

thanks for the advice, i bought the gel that phenoix graphics sells, i also have an old hood with the bird in gonna take the measurements from,
-
Power polish the hood first , make it like glass.. polish wont hurt a thing. if there is any wax on the hood you need to get it off. I think that 90% of people's problems on the install
-
well i put it on, gonna have to save for a new one wish i would have known the decal went to to the edge of the stipid efing clear premask when i tried to remove it it was taking the bird with it so i was picking at it ,here the feathers are not seprate!! there is clear between them! it looks like hell!!!!!
-
if I do another one, a buddy of mine told me he would take the plastic off it and put a paper transfer sheet on it for me.

i will take pics later , im cutting the bird out with an exacto knife to get rid of the screwed up clear edge

I've messed up the edges before too. You may try to wet/soap it up again and either use a heatgun or really hot blow dryer and carefully massage it. Then the trimming of the clear area should be at a minimum. If you can actually get it to lift off enough you can wet it up reall good and get it fairly hot with the heat gun and the vinyl will relax to it's previous shape. You'd be surprised on how forgiving vinyl can be at times!

i really messed it up lol i been cutting the clear off, acc looks pretty good! im alittle over half done, i have to keep stoping to do things that i paid for lol

First, I must say that you did an excellent job on your rebuild. Very nice. ;D I however, loved it better with the snowflakes on it. I never have been a fan of the Rally II's. Matter of fact my parts car has a set on it and I would love to trade them for a set of snowflakes. But, thats only my opinion. The only thing that matters is what you personally like. ;D Very nice bird though! Can't wait till mine is done and looks fresh again. Awesome!

I think the rallys look great.
