Seem like a good deal for a Pontiac 428?
« on: July 16, 2010, 06:34:42 PM »
Saw this on craigslist and it caught my eye. Even though it will probably need to be gone through, I thought a running 428 Pontiac would be a good deal at $850. What do you guys think?

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/pts/1846266735.html

I don't know a lot about the 428. Is it a 400 with a different crank? I believe Pontiac put this in their mid-full size cars (Bonneville, Parisienne, etc..) right? Is it a pretty good performer?

Thanks for time, guys. The wealth of knowledge has always been my greatest resource for all things Pontiac.

Judging by what he says in the ad, it is from a 1968 B-body with a 4-speed and 375 horsepower. The #16 head numbers coincide with the block and are 72 CC chamber heads, so they may have come with the engine. If it runs good, I would consider buying it. As always, try to get it for less than they ask for. It may sound good, but you never know what has been done to the engine until you take it apart and inspect everything. Good luck with it! Also, 428s are different than the 400 and smaller cubed blocks. It is one of Pontiac's large journal engines (400 and lower has 3.00" mains and 421 and higher engines have 3.25" mains). Otherwise, they are pretty much the same, unless it is an HO block (I don't believe it is by the numbers).

As you may know engine adapters are required for a 428 to fit in a 2nd gen car. I is not a big deal just another thing to think about. I have a 428 block in my 79.

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge, Kevin, but are we talking about the motor mounts or what? Like I said, I'm still new to all this. I assume the physical size of the motor is the same as all Pontiac blocks?
