« on: May 23, 2007, 03:03:51 PM »
anyone know what a delco circuit box about 4"X6" under console on a 1980 trans am is?
it was powered by a toggle switch poked through the top of the console?

In '80 they started using a basic ECM to control the emmission control Quadrajet and maybe (I don't really remember for sure) timing advance. What you're looking at there is the "Commodore" of automotive computers! lol

Shouldn't have a toggle switch though if it's the 80-81 ECM

The box is container for the circuits needed to retard timing if the
detonation sensor "hears" detonation. The switch "should" be for
the turbo boost monitor lights. Off, Hi, Low intensity.

It's not actually a computer, just a couple of circuit boards.

And '80 is WAY different than '81...

Ahh...I was thinking of the horizontal area of the console, not the map pocket area :-\

The boost monitor lights were an option in 1980 and 1981.

The console was different in 1980 and 1981.

The switch for boost light intensity was different for 1980 and 1981.

In 1980 the switch was on a trim plate residing were the map pocket
would have been. In 1981 that whole area is moulded closed, the
light intensity switch is back by the console lid (front).

One of the most common misconceptions is that 1980 and 1981
were nearly the same, they are in fact very different.

Over the years many swaps may have occured, this further complicates
understanding of the two years.
