Not a TA related subject, but Frank needs some help here.
« on: October 21, 2010, 04:29:33 PM »
Does anyone know how to write a resume?  I mean a good one.

I think the problem here is that Frank's resume is way too long and I don't know how to actually do a half way decent resume.  I know how to do one, but I need one to really STAND out with Frank's experience.

I called some local places here that do resumes, and they want $695.00 to do one!!

I almost fell off my chair when I heard one of the gentleman tell me that.  There is NO WAY I can afford that.
I mean GESH, Frank is unemployed!!

They can be sorta industry specific...

Just go online, view examples in the industry you are steering
toward and add your own stuff.

The more examples you read, the better you'll get the idea.

 It's not that tuff. really.

Just a 1-2 page logical listing of why you are the one they need to hire.

Yes, mine is a cover page with refrences, then two pages of work history. Any more than that and they generally won't look at it because it takes too long to read.

Heidi,

Is there an employment office nearby? Most up here offer you computer access with resume writing software. When I was on unemployment, they even offered classes (free) on how to write your resume. My assigned caseworker even went over mine with me.

It's something to look into.

I've been writing and rewriting my resume over the past month. I borrowed an older book from my parents called "Resumes That Get Jobs".  Combining the information in the book and the opinions of friends who read dozens of resumes a day, I got mine narrowed down to one page. I also have a seperate sheet with references if the prospective employer wants them.

Google resume and you'll get plenty of examples.

Yeah I think it all depends on the job you're going after. Mine's up to (2) pages long now but that includes a lot of technical expertise so that I don't have to put that into a cover letter. If I did, my cover letter would be a short novel.

For the second job, I just used their online form as it's not rocket science to stack boxes, unbox product, repeat, etc.

There are quite a few good books out there and good examples can be found online.  I took a resume writing class at the community college near my home.  It was $80, but included some career tests in addition to the resume review.  It was well worth it in my opinion.

I bought some software for resume writing and you pretty much select the resume format you want and it asks you all the questions you need to fill in the blanks and when you're done the whole resume is done.  You don't have to worry about trying to format, font and all that other BS. It makes it really easy but I think if you try to send it to perspective employers thru email they have a hard time opening it as it isn't a Microsoft Word format but it looks great on paper!!

Heidi:  I fancy myself as somewhat of a resume expert having helped a lot of folks through the years.  Sounds like you've fined tuned Franks already.  Happy to review it for you if you like.  PM me if you'd like to email it to me.

Good luck Frank!!
