Gas!
« on: April 24, 2006, 09:34:23 PM »
What kind of gas does everyone run in their TA's?  I started with premium, but dropped to mid grade when the prices went up!  I looked at the manual and it only specified unleaded - I guess they had leaded in 1977 - I can't remember for sure.

Also, now apparently gas companies are adding ethanol - is that ok for older cars?

as far as gas grade it depends on your engine is your car running stock specs???is the compresion ratio more than stock??i run 111 octane which is why i drive it once in a great hile, but i also have 12.11:1 compression, if youre running a stock engine you should be fine with mid grade fuel or even 87, as far as the ethenol blended fuel i think i read somewhere it will run fine in the older cars but i cant remember for sure

You could still buy "regular" gas back in the early eighties, I had expanded the filler whole in my 79 so the  Regular nozzel would fit in the filer neck of my gas tank.
I seem to remember that the lead was good for the valve seats in older cars.

With the older heads and/or 10.0 or greater, plan on mixing in some racing gas.  I do NOT recommend the lead additives, or you will find out in a hurry what it does to your plugs.  Moderate use of Octane boosters is OK, but don't think you can go from 89 to 100 octane by dumping it in.  My 77 pinged the day I took it home 29 years ago, and a simple Distributer recurve and carb tuning really helped!  When I bolted on the older Ram Air Heads, the only real safe solution is the correct octane level, or you can kiss your rings and pistons good-bye!

I always use premium in mine.... the way I look at it is that the premium is only 10 cents higher than the mid range which is only 10 cents higher than the low grade.  So I pay 20 cents more per gallon for the premium so (to make math easy) I spend about $3.00 more per fill up (20 cents times 15 gallons) and I fill up maybe 20 times a year.  So, I spend an extra $60 in gas a year which is not a big money issue to me.  When I first picked my Trans Am up in Tennessee it pinged alot becuase the guy used cheap gas..... ever since I started using the premium I have not heard it ping since.  Maybe that is just coincidence though.

there is still leaded gas around...usually high octane, like 100-118 octane has lead. Works great for racing, but don't run it in newer stuff, esp if the car uses o2 sensors..lol
peed limits....they're just suggesstions,..right?

I use regular in my Formula. It only has 8.2:1 compression, Premium would prolly leave too much carbon buildup in it.

$3.20 a gallon i wish it was that price over here in uk , i pay about £5 a gallon which works out nearly $10 and that is not even premium, i know our gallons are slightly larger but not by much and times that by 3 when your running a 83 elcamino with a 5.7 , a 88 camaro 5 litre and a 77 6.6 trans am on way (cheers brett) it works out at quite a big fuel bill each year.

but i cant complain, i would not drive anything else than american cars the pleasure of driving and owning somthing different is well worth it and the 77 ta shouldnt do many miles a year as is only coming out on sunny days which we have very few of.

I got rid of the post because of all of the political statements in there.  I try to keep this board relating to Trans Ams and such and not a place for political chat.

Good idea. I log on to learn about and discuss all things Trans Am.
