Power and OHM requirements for 1980 Temp/Fuel/Oil guages?
« on: August 02, 2011, 06:02:21 PM »
Does anyone know if the guages on a 1980 firebird use full 12 volts directly to the guage, or are they resisted to ~ 5 volts like the older GM cars. I don't see a voltage regulator anywhere on the cluster but I don't want to put 12v right to the guage and fry it.

Also - are their published OHM ratings for the guages for E - Mid - F? I want to see how off my guages are, but I don't know what the OHM ratings are...

Thanks!

i believe 12v..... I have my ls motor hooked up to the factory gauges and works just fine.... if there is anything its internal in the gauge itself....
gas gauge is 90 OHM with 0 being Empty, and 90 being full.

I had to play with my gauges pretty hard.  Yes, they are direct 12v. with the sensors giving off what ever ohm reading.  Gas is indeed 90 ohms full, 45 ohms 1/2 empty and 0 being empty.  Usually they don't go bad internally.  Problem is when the strap that comes out of it to the wire.  It can corrode there.
