Searching for Red 78T/A in Central PA
« on: October 20, 2010, 02:04:02 PM »
I'm trying to find my car.  I bought it in 1988 from the second owner who was related to the original who brought it up from South Carolina.  My wife, then girlfriend, insisted I get rid of it and the poverty of going to college finally made me do it.

I sold it in 1995(maybe 96).  Was red, with T-tops, tan interior and a Pontiac 400 that I had rebuilt.  I saw it once after I sold it around 1999 at Penn College in Williamsport.

I'd also consider buying another one if I could find something affordable.

Steve

Should also add that it had about 120K on it at the time.

How about a beautiful red '77 from Illinois?

LOL.  I actually put your's on my Facebook earlier today when I started to search for mine.  Nice, but I'd have to sell my motorcycle to afford it at the moment.

Do you still have the VIN?  The dept of motor vehicles can do a look up by VIN to see registration info.  Registration info can be considered public record, but some states may not share due to privacy concerns.   You may be able to find it yourself with an Internet search of the VIN, but that can be tough with a pre-1981 VIN.

I have been looking for my dad's '79 Vette on and off for about a year or so after reading about a guy who tracked down the Camaro from the movie Better Off Dead.    Maybe use his methods as a starting point...  http://betteroffdeadcamaro.com/

good luck

Thanks TA.  I'm starting to go down that road.  I haven't been able to locate anything with the VIN on it.  I have been trying to get it through the insurance carrier at the time, but it gets complicated since I'm not sure if I was on my own policy or family policy.  Regardless I have the policy numbers, but local agent can't help and referred my to corporate.

Corporate is in India and needs my mother to call since that's who had the family policy at the time.  Won't even tell me if they can get the VIN, so now a 40-year old man has to ask for his mommy's help  :(

I am not sure if PenDot has this kind of info, but you can always call and see if they have a history of vehicles you owned and registered in the state.  It is possible they have the vin and can maybe tell you if it is currently registered and where.

I'm in Williamsport.  Lived in Bloomsburg when I sold it.
Well, I decided to bring up the subject with my wife last night.  First I mentioned it to my stepson when we were lifting.  He got really excited and asked if it was for him since he's 13 and is already thinking about being 16.  I told him no.

At dinner I started to bring it up with my wife.  After 12 years of being together, I've learned how to bring things up.  My son blurted out my plan and killed the timing.  She was far less than enthusiastic.  This is gonna be a tough sell even after I manage to locate the car...assuming it hasn't been destroyed.

In a strange way I think I may understand how someone who places a child for adoption feels.

Good luck finding your car.  I am also from Pa and live in Lebanon.  The company I work for however, is based out of Williamsport.  I also went to Penn College between 2001-2004.

I am so glad I married a car chick.

I am in Steelton near Harrisburg.

First you need to find the car.  Then see if it is even for sale or even worth buying.  Then maybe you can figure out a plan to pay for it and if all of that is done, then take the plan to the wife.

Best of luck.

Here's the latest, and I probably shouldn't be posting it in the wanted section but it's easier than starting a new thread.

The DMV doesn't store information by plate number, but I can get things that I need with a VIN number.  I just need to fill out form DL-135 and it will cost me $5 according to the person from the PA DMV.

Called my mother, who is quite amused and she is going to call former insurance carrier with number I gave her.  Nothing like asking "Mommy" for help.  Hopefully I can get VIN number through them.

Sounds like you are on the right track.  Hopefully you find it.  And not in pieces.
