Title: Forum Suggestions and Problems
Post by: Hitman on March 03, 2007, 01:52:31 PM
Hope you all enjoy the new Forum.  If you have any problems or issues with the new forum, please post it here and let me know.  I did a test on this new forum for about two weeks or so and I should have all of the bugs worked out, but just in case, please post any issues you are having here.  Thank you.

I was looking for the spot to update my avatar and signature, but when I go to edit my profile, all I get is email and password boxes.

I see the "delete" button is back as an option next to the modify and quote buttons on posts that I've made. Were you going to give that a try for a while or take it out?

Looks great so far, have to play around with everything to get the feel for it.
Thanks for putting the effort in it.

OK, I found something, what are the restrictions on our avatars, I didnt see anything in the forum profile section on size/dimensions.
I'm all squished up here!

This looks great. ;D I guess the main thing I miss is the listing in the space by the avatar that tells where the poster lives  :-\(if they provide that information).
Thanks again.

Yes, some of the information transfered over with no problems.  Other things did not go so well.  Just like how it dropped off the first letter in everyone's signature.  That is why I mentioned to update your profile when you sign on...... update the location, signatures, birthdays, etc.  There is alot more that this forum can do as compared to the old one.  So, it is time to take advantage of all of the new and cool features.

I love it ! the red on black was unique and cool, but this is much better on the eyes. How does a page look with gold on black? Maybe on your special edition page? No complaints here, your doing all the work and I appreciate every bit of it.

I've got another idea to share.  When you click on a forum you can see who is viewing threads in that forum, what about being able to see who is online and viewing what forums at the main forum page instead of having to click, say, General Discussion or Shows and Events.

Again, just another thought to consider.

Rich..... If you are on the main page, there is a link at the bottom that says something like 3 Guests, 4 Users Online..... if you click on that link, it will show you who is online and what part of the forum they are on.  Of course in my view, I also see the IP they are posting from which you will not see, but check out the photo below.

I think there's a check box or two in your profile that allows you to 'watch' topics that you post or create.

How about putting who's online at the top of the page?  I don't know about you guys but I often check to see who is online and personally it's annoying to have to scroll to the bottom of the page. However, if I'm the only one doing it, don't change it for just little old me.

Well, the search member function is there as an Admin like me, but I am trying to get it to work for everyone.  As far as how is online, right now you are the only one who has asked that, so we will see what it looks like on top when I move it...... but I like all the stats at the bottom.

Well, I was going to say to go to your profile page and click the "Look and Layout" link. On that page there's a box that says "Show most recent posts at the top." Checking that box should do what you want, but I just checked mine and it's not checked but I still have the newer posts at the top. Very confusing.
Title: Re: Forum Suggestions and Problems

You should have the oldest post at the top and the new ones going down the page.  It should be set like that for everyone.

Post by: bandit nz on August 03, 2007, 04:31:47 AM
In thinking about it, I think having them run down the page works for me, as I can drop down and read up.
It means that if I havent been to that post for a while, I dont have to work out what the latest post was.

I'd like to suggest breaking out the Tech forum into subforums, like chapters in a repair manual.  I am a moderator/site admin on a Corvette club site and we did that a few years ago.  It makes looking for help in a particular area a whole lot easier than sifting through one big pot of threads.  It was a bit of a pain to reslot existing threads but going forward it has worked out great.
Title: Re: Forum Suggestions and Problems
Post by: Hitman on March 20, 2008, 02:57:28 PM
I think that the Forum is disected pretty well for the amount of traffic on here.  On some other boards, it takes me about 20 minutes just to find new posts because the posts are burried down in a child board, down in another child board, down in a sub topic.  Now I know this makes sense for having things broken down into sections, but sometimes it is too complicated to try and find something because you have to drill down through so many sections just to get to a post.  If you look at www.thirdgen.org , you will see that there is alot of sections there, but they need that many sections because because there is on avergae of about 500 people online at any given point in time.  With THAT many people on there posting, you need to have all of those sections or else your post would get burried too far down the list within a minute.  So, having alot of sections there makes sense.  My site that gets 130 posts a day and TAC which gets about 300 a day, has a simplified section list that it is easy to find posts and keep track of what is going on.  On some, there are way too many sections and sub-sections, and more sub-sections, that it takes alot of time trying to find a post.  The amount of traffic should designated the amount of boards to post in.  Now, I am not saying that a change is not in order..... but maybe as the site grows that will change and more boards will be added.
Title: Re: Forum Suggestions and Problems
Post by: P-Js_BLKBRRD on March 21, 2008, 09:10:00 AM
Point taken on the number of posts made.  But I'll offer this up - on the Corvette site we have a couple of quick ways to find recent posts.  There are about 1,000 active members scattered around the globe with an average of about 200 visits per day  (not high volume when compared to Corvette Forum, Ford Truck Enthusiasts, and other big sites that have general level topic forums).  Several members, myself included, do not have access to high speed internet connectivity so both of these pages are real time savers.

One is a page that lists all of the posts made in the last 24 hours (most recent at the top of the list).

The other is an active topics page that has a drop down list of time frames that can be selected from (1 hr, 2 hr, 6 hr, 12 hr, 1 day, 2 days, 1 week, 1 month).  Posts made within the selected time frame are broken out by forum with the most recent post at the top of each forum.

Also the 'Search' function lets you look at the entire site or just selected areas.  Again a time saver when you need it.  I have to admit I haven't checked out the Search function here yet but assume it is as rich in functionality.

Food for thought.  I enjoy having another resource for information specific to the car.  It saves a lot of time in the long run.

Thanks!

So, if I broke down the technical section.. would it be something like:

Engine
Transmission
Suspension
Brakes/Wheel/Tires
Electrical
Interior
Body Work
Title: Re: Forum Suggestions and Problems
Post by: P-Js_BLKBRRD on March 22, 2008, 12:42:44 AM
I don't have my Firebird repair manuals here at the house to look at the table of contents, but that's a good start.  At the Corvette site we looked at the TOCs of the Haynes and Chilton's manuals (amazing how close they are to each other) to come up with our break out.  We don't have too many problems with posts getting in the wrong place and the moderators do a pretty good job of keeping things sorted out.

The site is www.C3VR.com (C3 Vette Registry) if you want to take a look (you can log in as "Guest" to look around).  Here's what the tech section breakout looks like:

C3 General Discussion
     - For general discussion about C3 Corvettes
C3 Engines
     - For discussion of Engine issues
C3 Electrical
     - For discussion of Electrical issues
C3 Body
     - For discussion of Body issues
C3 Interior
     - For discussion of Interior issues
C3 Driveline Components
     - For discussion of Transmission/Clutch/Rear Axle issues
C3 Cooling and Heating Systems
     - For discussion of Air Conditioning/Heater/Radiator issues
C3 Fuel, Emission Control, and Exhaust Systems
     - For discussion of issues related to fuel, emission control, and fuel and exhaust systems
C3 Handling Components
     - For discussion of Brake/Steering/Suspension/Tire/Wheel issues
C3 Car Care
     - For discussion of Car Care issues

I own a 79 T/A with a 403 engine. I want to keep the original motor and put a newly rebuilt CHEVY 400 I took from my 78 G30 Van. I have not taken the motor out of the T/A yet and would like to know if I will have problems mounting the 400 in the T/A ..I also had the 350 tranny rebuilt from the 78 G30. Would that tranny bolt into the T/A ?? The T/A has the original automatic tranny in it now.

You should post these in the "Trans Am Tech (http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?board=2.0)" and "Parts Wanted (http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?board=20.0)" sections. This is for help with the forum. ;)

Suggestion:

In the profiles section, have a small list of threads the user is subscribed to. That way you can go to the user CP and check on the discussions you're in without having to chase them down.

Just a suggestion.

When you sign in at the top of the page, you should see two links:

I think that may be what you are referring to?

Kinda works like that, only it shows a list of threads that you've subcribed to, weither you've posted in them or not. That way you can go and backtrack the threads you've been in, say if you're looking for certain information on a subject, or something like that.

Have you ever thought of having people leave their orginal ads in the for sale section and just adding sold to the subject line instead of deleting them? On a couple of other forums I go to they do this and it keeps people more aware of what the market is for a part by being able to see what a like part may have sold for in the past. I know as a new TA owner it would be valuable to me to be able to look back at old posts and see what say a 79 nose sold for a month ago instead of just seing SOLD in the body of the thread.

Just my .02.

Yes, right now, the parts and whatever that are sold, they do not get deleted.  at least by me.  Sometimes the people themselves go back in and delete what was showing in there, but there is nothing I can do to stop them from doing that.

A suggestion for an alternate consideration -- how about making the sponsor banners full-width, but putting them in between posts about every 5 posts or so.  The way it is now with them on the right, there ends up being a lot of unused (blank) space underneath the banners, and they're kind of small because they're all scrunched up.  If you make them full-width they'd be easier to read, and you wouldn't be "wasting" space in the unused area.  That would give you greater utilization of space on the page.

I can't figure out why your having problems.  I can squeeze my Firefox window real small and everything still works perfectly.

Everything works -- but there's no way to get around the loss of width on the screen.  No matter the size you still have the areas under the sponsor banners to the right showing black space.  The problem comes in when stuff doesn't "wrap" like text -- i.e., pictures just end up with the 30% cut off them.

It also affects how the subject headers wrap.  If the banners could be made full-width and then interspersed with the posts it'd be much more efficient on screen space.

I can't move them to an empty place on the screen.  Every place you put them it creates an empty space one way or another.  Yes, right now there are only 4 on the side going down there, but there is a list of 60+ of them that I am going after for advertising.  So pretty soon the right hand side of the screen will be filled and there will be alot of black empty space on the left once you scroll down.  Yes, once I get them all signed up, there will be ads placed here and there throughout the Forum, but right now, since there are so few, they are just stacked over there on the right.

but werent they across the top before? that gave them plenty of space w/o affecting the forum space...i like the idea of a random sponsor every 2-3 posts...the way it is now (as rick stated) any pics get cut almost in half.

Hey Brett, I'm still having trouble getting the site to load. It takes forever. It all started when you had a glich with your server...? It was a couple of weeks ago. Ever since it takes about 2 minutes to load. Just changing topics takes about the same time. But going to your store is no problem at all. It loads instantly.  At the sametime AllGens forum started doing the samething. TAC is fine and all other sites seem ok. Did something change that I may need to change settings, security wise or etc. ?  If any computer experts could help I'd be greatful! I'm going thru forum withdraw and it sucks :'(

You might want to clear out your cache in your browser.

how about making the sponsor banners down the right side square shaped, like "Performance Years" forum does -- their forum isn't squashed as much, and their default text font appears larger (quite easy to read compared to this current setup).
