help figuring out motor
« on: April 24, 2008, 07:34:46 PM »
Hello

im looking at a 77 esprit that the someone made to look like a formula and swapped the motor however im not sure what the motor is now,   the guy had advertised is as a 77 formula 400, but the vin and tag tell a different story, vin and trim tag both say is a 1977 esprit, originally a 301 according to the vin, 2T87y7N, the only thing i could find on the motor was a XF stamped on the passenger side about a inch below the head, right next to the water pump, unfortunally xf shows for 10 different motors everything including a 301, 326, 350, 400, 428 and a 455ho,  the intake was changed as well so i couldnt get numbers off that, and the headers that were on the car made it impossible for me to find a displacement stamp.  the owner claims is a 400 but he always  claimed is was a numbers matching car, and neither of the 301's that fit the xf code fit a 77 only 78 and 79, is it possible it was a late model 77?

A 301 can ONLY use a 301 intake. The heads should say 01 (and some say 02 as well).

Look back around the distributor opening for the block number.

the intake on it was a edlerock intake for a quadrajet, the only matter of those i wouldnt be willing to pay the asking price for would be the 301, is there a way i can rule it out?  once i get the car i can figure out what the motor actually is?

 Yea.

As I just said... a 301 can only use a 301 intake. No Edelbrock intake
will fit. So, if it has one, it's not a 301 (unless tons and tons of custom
work was done).

Look at the heads, a 301 will most likely have "01"s.

The 301 can do more than it's original factory tune allowed, it's true
that there aren't too many aftermarket parts.

The 301 can and does make for a fine cruiser and way more folks
than you'd believe like and want the original setup in their birds.

However, "pretty weak" is inaccurate. <grin>

 I understand...

The key element to owning and enjoying a Pontiac is
having FUN! There are many ways to go about that,
getting a good return on investment makes sense to
me, especially on a drag car.

Maybe I read something into your initial post, but many
pass by really good deals on 301 powered 'birds not
thinking that Pontiac excitement is possible.

On the other hand, considering the resale prices some
of these cars are starting to see, buying a 301 powered
car and storing the original motor while you utilize other
pontiac power for your excitement wouldn't be a bad
choice either.

Because 400 powered cars carry a premium, great deals
can be gotten on the 301 versions, and their original
motors used while building-up your ultimate FUN motor.
