Emergency Brake Light Switch - 1979
« on: May 26, 2012, 08:51:48 PM »
Seems like daily I find something not hooked up right or just plain missing...today is no different.  I have read a couple threads on the e-brake light switch but still not sure I know what I need to do.

I believe I am missing the switch itself and does the wire circled plug into it?

I think this is a plunger type switch but I have only really seen replacements for the 67-69 TAs in catalogs.

Yes on all 3. Your switch is missing, it is the plunger type, and that is the wire.

I had a pic a couple years ago of how it is set up, but I can't seem to find it. Might be on my laptop, I will check.

The switch you need is not the same as the 67-69.

Thanks Keith. I broke down and ordered the '80 assembly manual from Brett last night. I couldn't find any reference to the e-brake switch in the service manuals I already have.

I noticed my brake light on the dash doesn't light up at all (even just a flash at start up)...maybe a bulb or something else going on even if I get the switch in place.  Let the treasure hunt for a proper switch begin!

You can check the bulb by just touching the switch wire to ground with the ignition on. It should light up.

I may have a switch for you. I will dig through some boxes today, and let you know either way.

No worries...I think I found a guy in Point that has a complete e-brake assembly (including the switch) for like $15.  Probably go that route.

I was able to get a switch from another e-brake assembly and it worked fine.  On to the next item!

along these same lines, what would cause the EMERGENCY BRAKE light to stay on? The e-brake is not engaged.

First place to look might be to check that e-brake light switch on the e-brake assembly.  My e-brake isn't quite adjusted right and I need to help the light off by pulling the foot pedal up a fraction with my hand to get the light to shut off.

Yeah, I tried that. I have to do it on my 69 Camaro too. That wasn't it on this one though. A little more info.....this was a restoration and I just got everything back together. I haven't replaced all of the bulbs yet and some of the sockets are hanging out of their housings. All of the rear marker lights are replaced as well as the tailight and turn signal and tag light bulbs. Don't know if this matters though. I'll check the switch again. All I did was pull up on the pedal to see if it was partially engaged and I stopped at that point. I had already put in about 8 hours yesterday and left the shop......oh yeah, the DELCO 8-Track and Stereo works great!! lol

Where does this wire start from? It's not plugged in to the plunger switch, but I can't find it. Looks like a brown wire and is coming from the bottom and running upwards. Can you see where it starts?
