should i buy this trans am?
« on: August 05, 2008, 02:17:24 PM »
I found a 1979 y84 SE 301 4 speed trans am for sale # matching, all orginal except the radio, still has orginal paint and decals/stripes. The guy wants 11,000 for it ,95,000 mile runs and drive great.    would that be a good buy ?

I would pass.  I don't think I could pay $11,000 for a 301 even if it was an SE.  I'd rather pick up a 78 with a 400 even if it wasn't an SE.  But I am biased towards the 78 model year.  And, I like the power of bigger engines.

I always liked the way the 301s handled...waaaaay better than the 400/455 in stock trim with the WS6 on both

There was a 301 SE on TAC a while back - nobody bit.  Something about the 301 being underpowered near as I can tell.

I'd thought of doing a an SE clone with a 301 4 speed at one time but found my SE.  I think the price is good - maybe yank the 301 and drop a 455 in there - store the 301 for resale purposes.

Wow, that's a lot of $$ for a SE 301 car.  Heck, you could almost buy my '78 ws6/w72 car for that plus mine has about 1/2 the miles too!!!

AND the 301 WS6 cars would destroy the 400 and 455 cars in an autocross, they had much better balance........ straight line?  not a chance, but on a nice tight autocross or hilclimb course?  No problem

really? even with the hills and having to speed up after the tight corners. i would think a 400 would over power it. overall

If you want it, then it does not matter what everybody else thinks.  Just because it has a 301 does not mean it is useless or undesirable, not every one wants an asphalt pounder especially when gas prices are unstable.
