77 Trans Am 403 4 speed swap
« on: October 31, 2016, 04:46:33 PM »
My brother just rebuilt the engine in his Trans Am (403). He decided to remove the auto it was born with and replace it with a 4-speed. We are now debating if there will be an improvement or lack of in performance. More specifically how it will affect acceleration, low end and top end. FYI gearing was not changed from stock. Thanks in advance.

I recently purchased a trans am with a manual swap (BW ST-10 4-Speed) and original 2:56 diff. In my case the engine has a ram air III profile cam and relatively low torque below 2000RPM. It is awful to drive below 25 mph. Lugs off of the line and will go 60mph in first gear. Highway RPM however is 2700 at 75mph

I'm having a 3:42 gearset and a TREMEC 5-speed installed at the recommendation of a local speed shop.

You have to have the crank machined to get a four speed to fit.

The swap is already done. And it's all sorted out. Thanks for your late and irrelevant and irrelevant input tho.

If swap already done ask your brother what differences there are instead of here.
