I'm gonna ask tomorrow about a price on the car -- he may just tell me to take it, because no one's asked about it for years (besides me...).

The only issue is that he's actually owed money for the work.  Even though it was 15+ years ago, that's still an outstanding invoice.

plus if its a customers car ,, he may not have a title for it.  unless you are in a state that that doesnt require one on a car this old.

In Oklahoma, if a customer leaves a car long enough that a mechanic can prove the "storage fees" and money owed for the work are more than the car's value, he can file for what's called a Title 42.  The state will then issue him a clear title for the vehicle -- he owns it outright.  I'm not sure if my uncle has gotten a title for this particular car, but it wouldn't be difficult or expensive to get.

Not yet.  I haven't had a chance to go back by the shop.  Hopefully this week, though.

I got back out there today and snapped a couple of quick pics of things I found interesting.

First, the odometer shows very, very low mileage:

And that can't be too far off.  Look at the brake pedal:

Lastly, I noticed an extra knob on the dash.  Obviously the rear defrost switch is there, but any ideas about the knob next to it?  I was thinking Audio Boost, but the factory used a switch.  Maybe part of an aftermarket sound system?

Another piece of the story:  The previous owner brought it in for transmission work, found out the cost, and never came back.  No work has been done to the tranny, so it will need to be gone through (like literally everything else on the car...).  My uncle spoke to the PO a couple of years ago -- he said, "You can have the car, I just want the wheels and tires off it."  However, someone in the neighborhood decided they wanted the wheels and tires more than the PO -- they'd already been stolen.  My uncle believes he has a set of keys, but definitely doesn't have a title.  A Title 42 wouldn't be difficult or expensive, though.

And I finally got a price on the car.  $1000.  He said he's had a couple of guys interested lately, but they all thought that was too much.  I say that price is high for a parts car, but acceptable for a complete, buildable car.  I see it as the latter, but I might offer $800, since I'm going to have to come up with tires and wheels...

What say y'all?

Try $500 you can always go up! The car will take a couple of dollars before it's like new.
If it's got breasts or wheels, you know it's going to cost you money!

I think the key is to offer him what YOU think the car is worth and don't get carried away if he wants more. chwkman is right, it's going to take plenty of cash to get that thing going, especially with no tires or rims!!

I think 1000 is fait, but offer 800.  sell him on the idea that it will be gone and after 17 years and he will not have to think about it anymore.  that should be worth about 200 bucks to him.

Just got word that my great uncle is closing his shop at the end of the month, selling the shop, all equipment, and all cars out back as a package deal.  I'm gonna go out there before then with $800 cash, 4 wheels/tires, and a car trailer.  I'm sure he won't turn me away...
