78 Y88 sell it or fix it
« on: March 26, 2014, 06:40:17 PM »
New to the site, here we go. Out Truck driving in California a year and a half ago and seen a fender, just had to ask.  he said yes " I'll sell it  for $1,500 and do you want to buy the 76 white on blue T/A with numbers matching 455 and four speed for $10,000 ? " I said no thanks I'll just take the 78. I paid $925 to ship it to Missouri and put it in a storage shed. I pulled the back seat for the build sheet and it's a 78 403 motor and audio trans with 116,000 on odomator built in van-Nuys ca with catalytic converter deleat, WS 6 , special edition, Y 88. And yes it has all the ear marks- eight inch wheels, small gold birds all over, gold T tops, gold dash, and build sheet. This car has ZERO RUST OR DENTS but does need a paint job and most of interio redone.   So here's the question I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH THIS THING. Put it back the way it was for resale value later or make it like I would like it. Don't get me wrong it's a cool car "who didn't want one of these back in the day" and the solar gold is a great color. But I can't get over the gold interior it's just to much gold!  So if I have to paint it why not black? Redo interior why not black? Will this trash the value? If I keep it I Will put in a LS motor. Either color the decals Will NOT go back on and put on a set of nice wheels and tires- no NOT the snow flakes. Or just sell it as is ?  What is this thing worth in different formats? Don't want to upset the car gods buy doing something to a low perduction number car or with value in mind do what ever I want? Need feed back- thanks

Post some pics.
It depends who you talk to...I say keep it and be prepared to fork out the $$$. I would keep it all original...but that's what I like.

I would be interested if you decide to sell : )

yes you would hurt the value by painting it black and no there were no "catalytic converter delete" '78s. fix it up and drive it.

If it's a Y88 put it back to original.  There were only 6300 ish of these ever made.

If you don't like what it will be when it's done original then sell it and let someone else save it.

Then go buy what you like.

Changing it will kill the value.

Another vote for keeping it original. There were only so many of these made and that gold will grow on you. I was in your shoes and until I did the research I was full speed ahead on black and gold. There are so many black TA's out there that at this point, you're better off returning it to original so you stand out in the crowd.

But ultimately, your car.

Thanks for all the feedback I think your right it needs to go back to it's oranganal glory. So I'm going to sell it as is. I have other projects to spend my time and money on. Right now I've got a 66 chevy truck that's channelled, chopped, and bagged with twin V8 and four turbos that needs to be finished among others so the T/A Will have to go. -just can't get over that much gold.
