Grinder or power sander??
« on: December 05, 2009, 09:26:18 AM »
Guys quick question i took my subframe off and i was wondering what the best tool was to prep it for paint and smooth it out.  also is there a specific sandpaper or grinding wheel i should use.  also i need to clean up the rust on things like my control arms and the radiator support frame.

Also what should i use for paint and stuff so that it doesn't just ship away. is there a specific cleaner to use to take off all the oils and grease.

I want to say red oxide primer - look at Doug's (car of the month)  thread on his new ride - page 2.

I've also seen people using raptor bed liner on the underside of cars - more durable than a painted surface

Wire wheel the heavy stuff off (grease and under coating) and then if you really do want to smooth the frame, get one of those adapters that go on your grinder that has a disc you can put sand paper on. Use 80 grit for good paint adhesion. Be sure to wear saftey glasses or a full face shield when using the wire wheel. Those wires do break off and go flying.

Wire wheel !  It worded great for me on all my parts.  Took off everything down to the metal.  I cleaned everything with brake cleaner and then primed and painted.

I have been on a budget with this build.  I wish I could epoxy everyhting or get it powder coated but I would rather spend my money on a engine rebuild.  I used DupliColor high heat primer and paint just because the paint has ceremic in it I thought it would hold up better even though I didn't use it in heat situations.  It has really turned out great.

I used a wire wheel on a big grinder. big RPM's. took the gunk right off clean. the washed it .  then used PPG DP90 epoxy primer. ( hard as a rock)  it cost a little more, but do it once and forget it.  my 77 I'm having it tanked, washed & powder coated.
the color for under the car will be the same black. and the floor will be gray primer but I DP'ed mine just for the protection. this is for 79-81,  78?77-older is red oxide primer with the color of the car sprayed over it.

DP-90

OK guys got an update/problem....  So i have been using the wire wheel and it is getting some of the stuff off but not everything.  there is this black tar stuff which i believe is the origianl paint they put on the frame and also some buildup of surface rust that i am unable to get off.  what do you suggest i use to get each of these things off?  I was thinking aircraft remover for the old paint and i have no idea what to use for the surface rust, but the wire wheel isn''t working.  here are some photos the one with the black tar like substance is hard to see but the surface rust one is better

if its the original primer you can leave it on.  as long as it doesn't look like a paint over Paint job. if it were mine I would get it all off. you got it this far, don't do it half a$$ed. you will feel better after its all done, painted with pics to post on 78ta.
