Firebirds came with Chevy engines from 1978 to 1981
Trans Ams came with the Chevy engine from 1980-1981.

Hope this helps,

George -- wasn't it an emissions thing at first?

Rick,
You are talking about why they used the engines?
If so, yes, Pontiac engines were on their way out.
Later, it seemed more towards gas milage, which is why the change over to the Buick V-6 engine.

Yeah, George -- IIRC, the 305 was a "high altitude" engine to meet compliance for emissions -- in Colorado and a few other places it seems.  Once that happened they kept expanding uses of non-Pontiac engines, and that's when the 403 came into the picture. :-\
