No they only made the 403 in an auto. prob because they didn't want people over reving them and with an auto the odds of it happening would be less likely.  so you don't spin a bearing.

There's no pilot bearing location on the 403.  You have to either get it machined or swap the crank.  Have him send you a shot of the engine - that'll tell you if it's a 403 or a 400 - he may not know the difference.

I was bored today so I called the guy.  Let me say that this guy was interesting to listen to.  He talked about that he has a M21 tranny ready for the car that's sitting inside his bedroom!!!!  I explained to him that I was confused about his listing.  I said..."what motor is in this car?  Pontiac never had a big block or small block, the only 403ci motor they've used was a Olds motor which they've never installed with a 4sp tranny."  He said that it was indeed a 403.  So I asked where the oil filler was...."was it on in the front center of the engine or in the middle of the dr. side valve cover."  He said it was on the side.  So, I said OK so it's not a 403 but a 400.  He said no, it's a big block 403. (?)
Anyway you put it I'd stay away from the guy because I'm sure the car is hacked and wacked unless you could get it for under $1k.  You'd think since he's hoarding parts in his bedroom he's just a Poncho nut like us but the further we got into our conversation I don't think he even clearly knows his own name or address.

Ya know seriously I almost passed up a good deal on my ta because the guy really didn't know anything about the car.  The only reason he owned it was that his neighbor had it and he liked it so he bought it.  He hardly ever drove it either.  I thought he was trying to pull a fast one on me but he turned out to be very honest.

This other guy with the 403 4sp car on the other hand.....I think he's just nuts.  I too thought that it was interesting when he stated the car being so reliable but the tranny was in his bedroom.  I could just emagine what his room would look like too.  No way in hell would I go walking into someone's home to pull out a major part out of someone's bedroom.  I can't emagine what he's done to the tranny in his bedroom.  Maybe he got mixed up on a bad batch of X-mas crack and he was talking about the 2 legged tranny in his bedroom????

i told him. if it is what he thinks it is the vin would be   2W87K9N100001   or somthing like that.

I got this e-mail today..

This car was apparently a 301 when new. This was not known to me until now. All I know is that it does in fac have a 403 and was stick shift. I am sorry for wasting your time. Have a nice day.

Tim

I e-mailed him back with.

ok its a 301 car that's fine.  but I am trying to tell you your 4 speed will not bolt to a 403 olds motor.  in all of GM's history they never had a 403 olds 4 speed motor. the crank shafts were not bored for a pilot barring. the end of the input shaft sticks into the crank where a barring is pressed in. old 403 never did it.
Title: Re: ???? 403 4 speed 1979 ????????
Post by: Joker (§ir£Ðragon) on May 09, 2009, 02:51:12 PM
No, they didn't come from the factory with the crank machined for the pilot bushing and input shaft. But there are ways around that. A couple of companies make (or did) an adapter bushing that requires the input shaft be cut a little. Or you can swap in a 350 crank which would be otherwise identical.

Perhaps the guy before him did just that. maybe he knew more what he was doing then this new owner of the car.  idk either way it sounds fishy

That's possible. But I have to admit, it's odd to swap from a Pontiac engine of any size to an Olds. I mean, I'm proff that people do it, but we're talking pretty long odds.

I just like to go against the grain. The 455 Olds in the Trans Am and the 400 in the Cutlass. ;)

1500.00  no motor or trans.  it's not the #'s motor or trans any way. it's never been painted, so I hope the build sheet is there. if there is no build sheet it will go on eBay with a sbc and 5.0 shaker setup.  or use a 89 gta 301 tpi motor I have, with a turbo hood. i dont no what i'm going to do with it yet. i have two 79's not done yet. 4 speed black Y84 clone and a   403 WS4 #'s car.

sure Y not. the last one I parted was a 79 10 year car. semi hit it.  it had its build sheet so I have that and the title, motor ,trans, body tag and took the dash panel with the vin. I paid 300 for the car. and a guy offered me 2000 for it last year at the nationals in Dayton.  what would you do?

ok, true.  I paid 600 for a no title t/a . it had good fenders , ok doors , nice seats and dash and so on.  quarters bad and holes in the floor and the back tail panel was trash.  I put the car on eBay for 2 week. my reserve was 800.00 , no bids over 400 on it.  tons of emails for parts.  the parts sold for over 2000 and scrapped the rest when the price of scrap was high last year.  keep in mind it is very hard to get a title in Ohio. you just cant go to the BMV and get a new one. and if it's a out of state car for get it. got to go to the court house do a bunch of paper work. pay for a title search. contact that person. mail some papers to them to sign ( if they do it) ( if they have the same phone #) get all the papers back, go stand in front of a judge and get him to sign the papers then you can send the papers to Columbus Oh. to the BMV and wait 8 to 10 week for your title.  heck with all that.  :P

went to go pick the car up.  and took the guy that does the body work. the car is all gone in the rear. and had a quarter put on in the past. pi$$ poor job on it. I don't want to do that much work on one so I past on buying it.  the motor is a 73 pont 400 with 4x heads.  not a 301 or 403 olds. like he told me. the car is a 301 4 speed WS4 car by the vin.  I found another one I go look at it Wednesday.  over by Indy.
