Can I put a speedometer out of a 1971 trans am into my 1979 TA?

Yeah the speedo is pretty much a direct swap. The 8k tach on the other hand mounts a bit differently than the 6k units,  but it can be done.

The only difference is that a 160 speedo from a 71 only has the brake light on the bottom as where I believe 74 on 160 have the brake and seat belt light.

no.. As long as the current speedo reads correctly the 160 should read the same.
