1970 Formula rallyII rims with or with out rings?
« on: May 14, 2011, 07:29:24 PM »
Trying to decide if I should use the trim rings or not?  The rims I was able to get in very good conditioning with just some very minor imperfections if you are right on them you can see but you really have to be looking.  The trim rings are in OK driver shape.  They do have some very small nicks and dings in them but should shine up pretty well.  Obviously I can't ride the fence on this.  Once they go on, they will have to stay on because they'll scrape the sides of the rims.  I've seen some of these early birds both with and without the rings and again, some I liked one way and some the other.  So, I guess I will let you guys tell me what I should do.

I had to vote without. I didn't think 70's came with trim rings?

The style rings  pictured are 73 and later rings.  15 inch optional wheels were same JW's  as T/A's where the rings were an option.   If those are 14 inchers I vote yes to the rings, if those are 15's I vote no.  Both the 15 and 14 inch rings of  the proper style are avalible in reproduction.

Norwood, these are 15" and I know the rings are the newer style.  I don't feel paying the money for repo rings to get it "correct".  This car isn't numbers matching anyways.  It's going to be a very solid driver/show car.

Looks like no rings is winning!!!  Guess we'll have to wait till those that waste time when at work chime in too :)

I voted without my glasses on and messed up your results. So take one away from with and add one to without. I think the early TAs and Formies look better without them, makes the car "tougher" looking.  If you're going to use trim rings the incorrect ones are a bit distracting if the rest of the car looks mostly stock. I had them on my car for a short time back in the late 90's until I sold the wife and the kids to get money for suspension and wheels. Sometimes I miss them..............................but not the Rallyes.

Yes I have to agree with what you are saying.  I've noticed too that it matters on how the rally's are painted too.  To me, your picture doesn't look right and I don't think it matters what style trim ring that's on there.  I also feel they need lettered tires too.

I have to agree and would say you should go without them.  I am not a big fan of the trim rings.

I agree it does matter how they're painted as well as what centercaps are used. My point in posting the pic was that using incorrect trim rings is distracting to a lot of people just like you picking up on my incorrectly painted wheels. Don't get me wrong guys, I LIKE rallye wheels and if the ones on my car in the pic above weren't almost perfect NOS take offs I would probably have painted them and put on correct looking centers and rings for the time I was using them. Thankfully I sold them to someone who wanted them as correct for their car who could put them to good use.
