TATA. What to look for?
« on: February 22, 2012, 05:35:35 AM »
Hi,

Looking at buying a TATA, claimed genuine daytona pace car, 40K miles, excellent condition. Any tips on what to look for to verify it is the real deal and not a good clone? What is the going value for one of these in the US? (I am in Australia).
Thanks,
Mark.

A build sheet would help. The VIN number should contain an "x" as the second digit. The cowl tag would say Y89. Going rate for a top of the line one is around 28-32 thousand from a dealer.

There was no documentation on the actual pace car, or parade car TATA's at Daytona. The graphics for the pace car came with the car when it was purchased new. The dealer would install them for a fee, but most people opted not to have them installed.

I thought Kevin ended up with that documentation? Or was that for the 80/81's only??

So it sounds like I can check the TATA easy enough but the Daytona bit is pot luck? Anyone know if the pace cars only had one type of engine? Eg pointy 400? Thanks for the info, particularly the price guide. Will update once seen. Mark.

I thought it was for the 80 INDY cars only. All TATA's are technically pace cars, most chose not to put the decals on the car.

There is NO WAY to prove a car is a Daytona Pace car, even if it was built before the race.

Yep. Got that point. Just noting that this one certainly was not at Daytona as it was built after the race date. Thanks. Mark.

I was just curious if you rejected it because of that fact?

I am looking at a Gold 1978 Trans Am. I need to know how I can tell if this car is a Special Edition and if so, what would be a starting price?
