80 Indy, New To Me
« on: July 11, 2011, 01:42:21 PM »
1980 Indy Pace Car, mostly original, factory radio is gone, its got air shocks in the back, the T-tops that are on the car don't match in trim or appearance so i assume they are off another car, but other than that its mostly 100% original and complete.  Its got some rust on the drivers lower door, the drivers dog leg, drivers rear frame rail and the passenger lower quarter, but it all looks reparable, just gotta dive in.  The car used to turn over and fire up immediately, but it had a fuel leak over the rear axle, i think the whole time the floats been stuck but with the leak it wasn't getting enough gas to overfill the bowls, now that the leak is fixed its pushing gas out everywhere, so i pulled the car to back through it this week.  Anyways here's the pictures.

Yea against the good people over at 301Garage I'm headed towards a StreetFighter build.  ProTouringFbody suspension, 1LE brakes with good pads, and since the interior and paint is gone, a repaint to black w/blue 73-78 vinyl and black hobnail interior.

okay :) sounds like it will be nice :) I love T\A's both stock form, and custom, pro-touring etc :)
Anyway, it can always be put back to stock if you ever want to ;) If you go with the pro-touring f-body suspension, please give me a PM of how it handles, since I am thinking of going that path myself :)

Yea that's the way i look at it, nothing will be major, to restore it, it would need paint and interior no matter what, so i might as well make it the car i want.

I'll definitely let you know my impressions of the PTFB parts.  Once i get the car to a point i feel like it wont let me down or explode it will see some AutoX and Road courses, so it will get used.

Hopefully rebuilding the carb gets it back to the way it was last month then i can start in on the PTFB suspension, steering and brakes, then get on the Keisler RS500 kit.

Very nice starter car. Sounds like she is in good hands. What are you intentions with the motor?

If i can get it to run again, ill run on it till i can finish the 455 which will probably take a while.  If it ends up being a wash, ill probably just pick up a used running 400 or 455 and drop it in.

Nice T/A you found there . The first thing I thought of was it wouldn't be to hard to make her prestine again from what i see in the pics.
I love that color interior for some reason ,but I see your most likely going to change it  . I like your idea of a 455.
I'm looking forward to seeing her new look when she's completed

Please don't take it wrong, as it sounds like you have a great plan... but that car would be SOOO cool if you just left it as a "survivor"...ie..clean up the interior ..  wash it up...literally just clean it up. Get it driving, as dependable as can be.. then drive it as is, or sell it and find another T/A that isnt #s matching....... It is SO original from the looks of the pics.. BUT if you chose to go the other route, it would be amazing too. Your car, your call. It will be very cool in the end either way.

and plus, if you can get it running again, and right, it would be such a cool cruiser. The 301T makes for a smooth, fun, and peppy driver. Never will match a 455 or whatever, but I think you'd be surprised if you spend some time getting it running right. And THEN, if you still don't like it, sell the engine as a running one. More $ in your pocket.
