Title: Pictures of Pontiac 400 engine
Post by: side0ut on January 21, 2010, 11:35:43 AM
I am almost finished rebuilding the engine in my 78 TA with Pontiac 400 engine.  However, I forgot to mark down how the distributor (can't remember if the vacuum is to the drivers or passengers side), pulley brackets, and air condensor hooked up.  If someone could take a picture of these items, it would really help me to finish putting the engine back together.  Can't wait to have it started up and able to drive it again.

Thank you,

Rich

Vacuum canister on the distributer points to the drivers side.

I replaced the steel line with copper for the look . but here is an idea how it go's on . the vacuum line goes to the lower part of the carb so the distributor gets full vacuum.

Thank you everyone.  Your engines look great.  I like the copper tubes.  Might have to add that to my engine..

I believe your distributor is 180 degrees out of phase. the vacum advance should be pointing to the other side. Correct me if I am wrong.

It actually doesn't matter where the vacuum canister resides. As long as the fireing order is correct you can start on any post of the distributor. But most of the time that are pointed to the drivers side.

Virgil, what is that beside the EGR ? the silver thing with the vac line going to the front of the intake.
will I need one on my 77 or are all years different?

nope runs fine.  I have never seen one in the other way.   tried it once , but the vac line hit the intake when timing it. I see Virgil has his like mine.

That is part of the EGR system on my particular car, i have seen a few others with the same set up. Its been on the car since I purchased it. The vacuum line comes from the vaccum switch on the front of the intake to the diaphram and then to the EGR. The ones I have seen them on were manual trans cars.

This is a photo of our 1977 11,000 original mile engine.  Untouched factory original.

thanks guys.  john do you have any more pic's of that motor. I want mine to be as close to that as I can.   can the EGR parts still be found?
and did the 77 have the choke heat shield? I have one.

The choke heat shield was not used in the 1977 engines.  All the hose and wire routings on my engine are factory.  Nothing has been changed.  What you see is 100% factory correct.  I hope these pictures help

Here is another.

Approx 85% to 90% of the engine paint is original factory applied.  I carefully color matched the original paint and touched up a few areas.  Otherwise my engine compartment has all the original factory applied finishes and could be used by restoration people as a blueprint to what the factory actually done.

I hope these help with your project

Thanks John, Great to hear from you again. the more i see of your car... the lower my jaw drops. lol... Im just in awe...

4SPEED... the heat sheild i think is available since lately. Contact Pete of FBODYWAREHOUSE...

http://www.78ta.com/smf/index.php?topic=13049.0

I think he is the only one that offers this piece currently.

As for the parts avaliability of the EGR parts.... I would have to say that your local GM dealer or parts store "should" carry them

I did some Google searching. all I can find is the egr valve, none of the other parts. any of you guys have the parts? and willing to sell them?

That's the back pressure transducer.  The new egr valve incorporate that into the valve itself.  I believe that assembly is still available at Clean Air Products 1 800-help.  They have a lot of these kinds of things for Pontiacs.  If I recall correctly, it's about $200.  But that would replace the EGR that you have with the original type part that has the back pressure transducer hanging off the egr valve.

But you should call him and send him a picture of that particular part to make sure you get the right one.

Thank you again everyone for the pictures.  I got everything hooked up except for the three brackets for the Air conditioner condensor.  I could never see John's pictures until I realized I had to log on.  Doh..  Now that I have seen his pics, I should be able to put the three brackets on.  Will try and get pictures as soon as I can.  Stopping for the day... I'm beat.

those were a common motor for gm cars in the 80's and early 90's.
the "tech4" found in chevy celebrity's grand am's cutlass cierra's some cavaliers they mainly had the 2.0 though the 2.5 tech4 was the BIG 4cyl back then  oh yeah they were also in s10's and s15s there are plenty others but one that comes to mine clearly the caddillac cimmeron lmfao yeah what a car.

p.s. im glad you are shocked you missed a piss poor era for cars.

yeah all 15 hp they had good greif to give you an idea they made the 185 hp motors seem very fast from the 307's to the 400's 305's and 350's they seemed like absolute power once you drove one of them.

Thanks again to everyone for the pics.  Finally got everything back on and working. (kinda)  Wish I had more time to work on the car.  Seems like it will take forever to get everything done that I want to.  The AC compressor was a b*tch to put back on but finally got it.  Here are some pics just in case any was wandering.  Just have to figure out all the vacuum hoses.. but that will be another tread.. :)  We will see if I can add the pics..

might I give some friendly advise.... the filter you have on your fuel line... it looks as if its plastic and laying directly on the thermostat housing.... if you choose to run the filter give it a little more line so its not laying on the housing, best location for that type of filter is closer to the tank. its extremely hot and it will be susceptable to melting and then leak.  On a personal note I dont trust that type of filter just for that reason, they are affective in doing thier job but there is a lot of heat on these engines and they can cause a lot of headache and heartache. recall a buddies dad with a 70 Lemans did the same thing... about 4 months later the car went up in flames due to a gas leek in the engine compartment.

really great job.... how does it sound ....

could you be so kind to get me a picture of your throttle and kick down linkage to carb set up as something doesnt look right to me on mine and it would help me a whole lot.
