Video of Mini 1980 Indy Trans Am Pace Car
« on: July 20, 2011, 09:51:50 PM »
For those of you who have been to the Trans Am Nationals you may have seen this already. I bought an electric kiddie car at a garage sale a number of years ago for $2.00. I put it up in the rafters of my garage and nearly forgot about it. Some five years ago or so I stumbled upon it and began a restoration of it into a copy of my Pace Car including original seat cloth. . The video includes some photos I took during the process and a quick video of the mini now next to my real Pace Car. Here is a link to the YouTube viideo:

Very neat indeed.  Never even seen one of them before.  Obviously something that was big back in the 80's!  My first TA was a silver/red '80 and I bought a 1/8 scale model kit (don't remember what it was other than it was brown).  Anyways I painted it all up and had a sign painter do the bird and decals to match.  I always got a lot of comments on it.  Always need to have a "model" of what you actually own.

Thanks for all the positive feedback! When I saw that car at the garage sale I was sure I was looking at a turbo Trans Am but the Iroc decals were messin' with my eyes. When I got a good look at the car I snapped it up, couldn't believe it was actually a Turbo Trans Am. Of all the body styles they chose the turbo, too cool. I enjoyed most of the process of making it a copy of my T/A. The type of plastic they used for the body was a real bear to get any real good paint adhesion. It's been fun taking it to cruise-in's and shows putting beside the car. Only trick is keeping the kiddies off, can't blame em for wanting to jump in, they just don't know how much work went into it. I think the mini has had more pics taken of it than my real car.

Or get a mini car alarm like those for motorcycles and a small 12v battery under it.  Couple that with a prox. sensor so if anyone just gets close to it the alarm goes nuts.

I am looking at doing one up for my daughter.  What paint did you end up using and where did you find the hood bird?

That's quite amazing IMO . I can't get over the things you did to match your T/A
