1972 455 HO carb and Dist
« on: October 14, 2011, 01:52:58 AM »
Trying to find out mainly the difference in the distributor on my 72 formula.  It has the 455 HO motor, and what looks like an HEI dist.  As I understand it the HEI did not come out until 1975.  The car has not been started in about 10 years, from what I was told.  It will crank, but not turn over.  I have the gas tank out, as I was working on the trunk floor pan.  I just sprayed starter fluid in the carb to see if I could get it to fire up.  Can I put the fuel pump lines in a gas can and if so do I put both lines in?  Any help on getting fuel to the carb, and how to check for spark from the dist is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hei has the large cap..hard to confuse with point type.
Just pour a few ounces of fuel into the front carb vent to fill the float.
One line to fuel pump is a return line..just mainly need the supply line as the return line is just excess fuel and vapor.

From what I have heard this dist was an option in 1972.  The HEI was not standard equipment until 1975.  I think it was called a unitized ignition?  Does anyone know of or have this dist?  If so any idea of where I can find reference manuals?  I would like to do a tune up on the car and see if I can get it started.
Thanks

You should have an electronic dist 1112133 this number is on the side of the dist housing below the
Cap. This dist was standard with the 455ho.  Your distributor should have the module bolted to the side of the dist housing and the plug wires and upper cap are made as a single piece .
