I was the high bidder on the engine, but didn't meet the reserve.  I made an offer and the seller accepted it.  I picked it up last night, so now I'm the proud owner of a 1977 W72 Y6 code "engine" (less any accessories, intake manifold, carb, etc.).  The crank turns fine and the cylinder walls ook good.  Except for the serial number, it's exactly the same engine I have in my car now (that runs fine, but looks kind of nasty, and has 146,000 miles on it), which I plan to rebuild sometime before spring.  So, the question is - what do I do with this one?  Here are some of my thoughts:

1.  Part it out and put the parts on Ebay to hopefully make a profit
2.  Get the heads rebuilt so I'll have them ready ahead of time when I rebuild mine.
3.  Rebuild it and add some high performance "stuff" to it for a 2nd engine
4.  Hang onto it to use for parts if there is something I need for rebuilding my current engine.

Any thoughts?

well that depends,
 I assume you dont have any numbers matching concerns,
 so in my opinion i would just rebuild the new motor with all new parts, and add some power adders, then on a rainy day i would just switch out the motors, then have some fun.....if the motor in your car is a numbers matching i would at least hold onto it unless you ever wanted to go back....but its your engine and in the end youll have to decide what to do....

Take it apart.

Block: Hot tank it to degrease. Have the machince shop install new cam bearings. See if it needs overbore or just cross hatch clean up in the bores.

Heads: Hot tank to degrease. Send them new springs, and valve seals. Have the springs good to .500" lift. Have a 3-angle valve job done and new valve giudes installed.

Crank: send out to have the journels polished or cut .10" if necessary.
 Rods: Have the big end resized and new rod bolts (ARP) installed.

Get it all back and decide, oversize pistons needed ?, rod and main bearing sizes std or .10, .20 oversize?

 Have them hot tank the intake, valve covers, oil pan, and exaust manifolds if your saving that for stock.
 Decide on what camshaft your going with and fixed or adjustable valve train.
Order a Felpro enging overhaul set. Order new oil pump.

Call me and I'll drive the 8 miles up there and help you put it back together. It should take a weekend.

I should have added that I do want to keep my existing block since it is number matching and yes, MD Bandit, we are going to do all of that to my existing engine sometime very soon.  Would it make sense to get these heads done ahead of time and use them on my original block - or should I stick with the ones already on the car?  Does mixing/matching heads matter?

if they are the same castings then no, no change will take place, unless you add bigger valves, port and polish the ports, etc.... so if you want to go that route its not gonna hurt

Mike if the castings are the same number, sure take them to get done ahead of time. This is a machine shops busy time before race season starts.

When are we going to see a picture of that new radiator cap installed?  Or are you waiting for the Nats for the unvieling?

Well......I have the hood nozzles ripped out and being painted. Also, the tach/clock is ripped out to be fixed. Dash bezel is being re-tinted at Randys. I get this all back, then I'll shoot it after I clean the car up.

fb_rider:  A non-running engine doesn't usually bring much- even parted- on eBay.  I  sold my Y6 out of a 77 with the 6x heads and the crank and rods to a local 60's Grand Prix restorer (the same guy that bought my all-original 1966 G.P.) for $100.  Tried to sell it for the same money on TAC and other sites for months with no luck.  I now have a guy that is buying all my 6x heads (4 sets) for $100/set.   And he pays shipping to Canada, so go figure.  Leaves me with 2 more 77 400 blocks and cranks in the garage to get rid of.  Your best bet is to keep it and run it in your car.  Pull your original engine and put it up.  You can build this engine to whatever you want without the worry of ruining the originality of your car.  Just my opinion, which my wife reminds me daily isn't worth anything :oops:

I think mine was:  WA.   I could be wrong.  I no longer have it.  I know the Y6 was from a 77 automatic.

If I were you, I'd hang on to that motor, you never know when you might need it! I got a Pontiac 350 in my car, but I have been considering picking up a 400 just to put away for the future. hope this helps, nice find! :)
