Window regulator wheel
« on: July 24, 2015, 01:35:55 PM »
One of the little wheels on my power window regulator somehow busted and causes my window to jam when going up or down. I've tried sourcing a new one but they don't look fixable. The post just pops out of the track.

I was thinking of cutting a thread on the post and getting a big washer on there to act as a wheel and then getting a locking nut on there. Any other ways to fix? I could always just buy a used regulator, it's just a ton of work for something stupid and small.

Picture for reference.

Depends which roller, and if accessible. If you need to remove the regulator to fix then replace the lot, not worth the hassle. The rollers and guides for the glass side are all available, here's one for the regulator side. Don't panic if they are stiff, they don't actually roll on the end.

Both sizes of rollers for the regulator are still available from GM.  They pop off and you press the new one over the stud.  You will need to remove the regulator from the door.  Remove the window but keep the motor installed.  The motor will stop the regulator from snapping shut.  The rivets on the regulator get loose over time anyway.  I've had to remove a few of them and install new rivets in their place.  I've looked for replacement regulators and haven't been able to find any so I think fixing your current regulator is well worth the effort.  If you replace it with a used one, you could end up with the same problem.

There's actually plenty of power window regulators for 70-81 but since they are nearly all slightly different to stock, they then don't get classed as reproduction. In many cases they are only sold direct through power window specialist shops. No idea how they compare to stock replacements. Expensive though if you only need to replace a bush or two, it's more the hassle or removing it all for access. Take lots of pics in every access hole, might be handy for reassembly!

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. The wheel that's broken in the picture is the one not actually pictured.... sorry that doesn't help too much. I found the dorman replacement but folks on TAC said it wasn't the same at all. Hmmm. I'm going to go ahead with cutting threads onto the post and sticking a washer on. If that doesn't work I'll cut the post off, stick a bolt through and put a washer on that and grease the crap out of it.

After that I'll just buy a used one. What a headache though... It seems they offer reproductions for every unit but this one. I like the idea of sourcing the camaro ones, I'll check into that.

You're trying to fix it the hard way.  There's only two sizes of rollers on the regulator, the small one is part number 9666748 and the large one is part number 3069189.
