L78 convert auto to manual - effort?
« on: June 29, 2012, 09:25:54 PM »
Total newb question here but what would be involved in converting an automatic transmission 400 (L78) to a manual 4-speed? Are some of the L78s an easier switch than others? Is it even worth the effort if you could do it?

And is it something the Pontiac factory ever did at a customer's request? I've read some interesting things that Pontiac did for customers in the late 70s to fulfill orders.

Go to keisler engineering web site, they have kits to convert auto's to tremec TKO 550 5 speed overdrive tranny's. It will give u a good idea on what's involved.

Crappy part is getting the hump welded in for the shifter . I am seriously debating a T56 right now
Here's another site you can look at . I don't see an install kit at Keisler for the t56 ?
I know your not doing a 5-6 speed , but  they have the clutch pedals etc that you will need

Nice...seems like a fairly decent effort and some coin  ;)
