t-10 4 speed
« on: May 01, 2009, 10:25:10 AM »
So what is a tune up I can do to my transmission without doing a rebuild? I want to just drain it and put new gear oil in(what would be the best to use) and is there anything I can do to make sure my linkage is all tight and correct? Anything else I can do to it besides that that wouldnt consist of major labor? I dont know what normal up keep is.

Maintaining the proper lubrication levels and type of oil is about all you can do for a manual transmission, with oil changes at the appropriate intervals.  Cleaning and lubricating the linkage is a good idea.  Otherwise, there's not much to be done unless something breaks or starts making noise.

pretty sure it takes 80w90 gear oil.   i was wondering if the special lubes are ok or benefit these 4 speeds.  penzoil has a "synchromesh" fluid,  will that help with shifts or is it for newer designs?

mine is the original. So there should be a drain plug on it(assuming on the bottom) and a fill plug at the top? Does it come in the OZ I need or is there a certain way to filling it up with the correct amount?

Correct -- drain it from the lower plug, fill from the upper.  You fill until the fluid level is even with the bottom of the fill plug with the car on a level surface.

or flip your car on its roof and drain from the top and fill from the bottem

Didn't some "Newt" write a law about that?

this worked for me really well.  take it out and lay it on the driveway go and eat supper for about an hour and when you get back you will see it has run out all over the driveway and youll be ready to refill it then cause it will be empty.
