Removeing motor mounts from the frame
« on: March 31, 2008, 09:10:11 AM »
Any one know the best way to get the motor mounts off of the frame.  There is a nut on the back inside the frame that is not accessable.  Looks like the lower control arm needs to come out to get them out.  I got 3 bolts out and 3 more to go.

Use an air chisel and knock the head off the bolt.

Thought about that.  Leads to my next question putting them back in I still have to put a bolt on the back.  Looks like there are multiple mounting holes.  What holes do I use for the 455 olds??????????

Do you have the mounts and the adapters for the block? Regular motor mounts wont work with out the adapter plate, it bolts to the block and the top mount bolts to it.

I'd vote for gloss as it won't have any "pores" in it to trap dirt/grease/oil where the other two do which gives it that satin/dull finish.

Nope sorry. Paid $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (ok I left off a couple $$$$$ but you get the idea) at first shop to do that, amongst other things. The 80 firebird I have won't see that kind of attention until I'm ready to drop the engine/tranny in which will be next year at the earliest - many other things have to happen suspension/body wise first.

I put a set of motor mounts in a 81 TA when I added a 400 engine.
I welded the mounts in.

I took a stripped down 400 block and bolted the motor mounts on it and then set the block inside the frame.  I bolted the block to the transmission to make sure it was lined up.   Then I tac welded the lower part of the mounts to the frame.  Unbolted the block and pulled it back out and then finished welding the motor mounts to the frame.

can a small child get their arm into the nut on the back side?
if so get nuts that have a pice of metal on them and have the kid hold the nutuntill you start the bolt the pice of metal will hit the side of the frame allowing you to tighten the bolt
i have not tried this but i have seen the same idea used before

i am glag my brother is so much younger than me

You said you have the upper motor mounts, does that include the plates as well? Just asking, because alot of people have never seen olds mounts complete.

Its two peices one that mounts to the clam shell shaped like [ that also mounts to a bar with 3 bolts that mount to the block  Paid $130+ from Year one.  What a rip.
I need to find out what holes the clamshell mount need to go in on the frame.  I dont have a welder but that is a good idea.
