Found a very nice, very original pace car today while driving around today.  It's totally original.  Looks like it may have had some old paint work on the driver's side but the rest is original.  The paint is definately tired though.

The bad:
paint
carpet was removed (owner was going to do some work on it
power antenna stuck up

The good:
66k original miles
extremely solid-no rot
motor runs very well
brand new period correct exhaust

What would be a fair offer?  Sorry but I did take pics with my phone but my phone didnt keep them.  Trust me, it's all there and all solid.  Just bad paint.  Even the t-tops look very good with very minor rub-thru in the normal mirrored areas.  Nothing has been altered in anyway on this car.  Is it worth $8k????

I think i'd have to get more into the 5 or 6k range.  Hard to judge.

i'm thinking more in the 5 grand range. my friend had one on ebay and only sold it for 10,000. and it was super nice and orignal with very low miles. the only alt. was an aftermarket a/c. and it never hurts to try and get a deal

Thanks.  I crawled under and over it pretty well.  I can't find any rot or anything really off anywhere.  Still has the correct radio, all gauges and controls work as they should.  Tires will need to be changed since they are really dry rotted.  Paint, carpet, and decals are the only big ticket items I can come up with at the moment.  I spoke to him over the phone a good amount of time last night.  I got him down to $5k cash.  I think I may go for it.  I don't want this to get in the wrong hands and get all messed up.  I think I should change my sig name to the ANTI-reaper since I've saved a few lately.  This one is calling me pretty bad and the funny thing is that I never really considered a turbo TA as something to get.  Like I said, I don't want to buy this to make a killing on, just want to be able to at least break even if I do need to sell it down the road.

I thought this was just because when they first came out people didnt understand how to properly run and maintain them.  Plus the general public had no idea how they worked. Look at all the comments about different technologies over the years.  People use ro complain about how unreliable fuel injection is but today you see more and more custom builds using it.  Besides today with all the great synthetic oils and knowledge they cant be that bad.  My very first TA was a non turbo 301. I tried and tried to blow it up but it jist wouldnt do it. Granted I was just a punk kid and wanted to swap it out with a 400. I remember driving with it in frst gear and flooring it for ever but it never missed a beat. What a stupid kid I was!

> the facts are well known, great for originality, but has reliability issues

Apparently the "facts" aren't that well known.

Beside the initial CNC programming errors in the 1977 production, the
actual issue was basically oil breakdown.

The turbo cars all had a big fat sticker drawing attention to the fact
that the turbo and the engine shared the same oil and that attention
must be paid to regular changes. They even went to the unusual extent
to call for straight 30 weight oil (other than cold climates).

Lesser known was the need for proper cool down/shutdown on this design.

It is necessary to sit at idle a couple of minutes before shutting
down each and every time. This allowed cooler oil to flush through
the turbo and was a deterrent to oil coking.

For the NA engines, a design rpm limit existed of 4500 due to the
lightweight 2 counter weight design. It'll actually run maybe 5K fairly
safe, but the engineers figured it as solid at 4500 all day long.
Since Pontiac V-8's make their power low to mid range, there's no
good reason to be over-revving it anyway. The crank is the exact same
armasteel that was used to make all the other crankshafts.

So, the engine is reliable, but some of it's owners weren't.

dont have to own one to read about the quirky nature of the turbo. owners couldnt wait to swap the fragile 301t for a NA400. as i said above, they got it right a few years later w/ the 3.8 GN motor
