20" wheels on a 2nd gen Trans Am
« on: October 16, 2014, 07:28:57 PM »
Just wondering what you all think of these wheels, They are the Velgen vmb8 , I really like the look of the forgeline rb3c wheels but am looking for a cheaper option. The Velgen are around $450 per wheel and i think they look like the forgeline. They only make the velgen vmb8 in 20x9 and 20x10.5.. would 20's be too big?  Thanks!

I'd say 18s would look good but anything more just wouldn't look right.

I don't see any info or pics on their website that would lead me to believe they might carry wheels in the correct bolt pattern and offset to fit a 2nd gen.

From the Howey website: "To achieve this, Velgen wheels are designed and manufactured for specific vehicles."

It looks like you'd need thick spacers that also have a different lug pattern to use them onn a 2nd gen. They don't show specs on the Velgen website.

Ok, thank you for the reply, I am still learning.. and am confused still on offset and backspacing. So second gen wheels have pretty much 0 offset right? So should I be looking for a wheel with that offset? The bolt pattern for the 2nd gen I thought was 5x120.6 or 5x4.75 is that correct? Thanks for the help

Yes 5  X 4.75" bolt pattern is stock. When you get into wider than stock wheels there comes a point where adding additional backspacing keeps the tire from rubbing the fender lip. There is a sixing limit depending on suspension, payloads, use of the car, etc. and earlier 2nd gens can run wider rears than later ones so do a lot of research before ordering. You may want to look through the thread linked below to see what others have done.

I have been researching this as well. I am looking to use 19" x 10's in the front. Going to go with 4" backspacing (stock is 5.xx) so it will bring the wheels out from the body instead of in. I will be cutting the fenders and flaring them to fit.

The rears I am planning on using 19"x 12" with stock back spacing. I am keeping the 5" stock back spacing because there is no room with the 4 link to go inward with the rim. Going to flare the fender in teh rear as well. Body shop will have its work cut out for them.

Would love to see more pictures of TA's with aftermarket wheels. Doesn't seem to be very many.
