cowl tag help
« on: September 03, 2008, 12:55:44 PM »
I posted this in the resto section and i was wondering if someone could tell me what the codes mean.
it a 1979  t/a 4 speed disc brake no options car.  I was wondering if there was any way to tell if this is a w78 car without ordering from phs?  I have heard that you can sometimes tell from the chrome valve covers.  Is that true?  Because my uncle got the car in the mid 80's from a guy in arizona.  He said that the engine is all original down to the chrome valve covers with 26000 miles on it.  However, I can't ask him anymore about the car since him and my aunt are going through a nasty divorce.
Any help is greatly appreciated

here is some info to help decode the cowl tag,

http://www.78ta.com/cowl1979.php

not sure what w78 is, but the chrome valve covers are a good sign for a w72. also I think 4speeds in 79 only had the w72 package. the 4 wheel disc is a good sign it had the ws6 option, your sure bet is to get the phs or you may have a build sheet behind the back seat that would tell you more.

Yes, all of the 1979's that had a 4-speed came with the W72 Pontiac 400.

Not all 4-speed manual 1979 Trans Ams were W72's.  The 301 was also available with the 4-speed manual transmission.

Sorry, I guess I should have been more specific.  I meant that if you had the Pontiac 400 and a 4-Speed, then it was the W72 Pontiac 400.

Thanks for the replies.  I know that the 11l and 11u are cameo white paint.  But what is the 62W

If you check the link ( http://www.78ta.com/cowl1979.php ) dfred provided above, you'll see 62 is a Camel interior.
