not sure whats going on there, does it ever rest on zero? maybe just a guage gon bad. maybe hook up a mechanical guage to the engine, if someone could chime in as to where would be an easy spot on the motor to hook one up, that would help tell if the guage is fubar

It's either a bad sending unit or a bad gauge.  The easiest way to tell is to buy a variable resistor and test the gauge.  Variable resistors are about $7 at your electronic's store.  You need something like a 500 Ohm variable resistor.

4speed is probably right but I'd rather diagnose rather than change parts and hope.

from what I see the gauge was moving around. from the  bad gauges I have had they either dont work at all or they peg off the chart and stay there.    a bad sender would send false reading to the gauge.

but Mr.  ta78w72  is right test it first .  so you dont wast money on parts you dont need

does anyone have a photo of their oil sending unit.  when i first replaced the unit it looked different from the original one and i thought it was just that they made a standard one but they do keep breaking on me?  i have a W72 motor.  thanks for all the responses guys.

That could be your problem.  Check the owners manual for the ohm spec for the oil gauge.  Check that spec against the sender.  A sender with the wrong value would cause that exact problem.

See....4speed has good instincts....and he does incredible work.  I want him to move next door to me.

My oil pressure guage bounces too. It's worse at night when I hit the lights, or use the right hand turn signal. Any ideas guys?
