Topic: Is this trans am worth restoration

Forgive me if I’m in the wrong section I’m new. So I’ve been on the hunt for a 77-78 trans am. but a friend of mine said he knew where one was but it’s a 79 and the lady (original owner) wants it gone and will sell it for $3500. Been sitting For 27 years but still runs. I Went to go check it out and looks like what I expected. It started right up no problem. Radio works. A/C blows cold. Has 2 pretty deep hits on the driver rear quarter panel and on the passenger rear quarter panel. It has rear drum brakes so it doesn’t have the WS6 package but it is a  Y84 car. I would like some input if I should buy this car to flip or fix and honestly need help on what I’m looking at because I know very little. Help would be appropriated. Also it’s rust free floor pans. Trunk. Under rear window and Etc.. just has surface rust

Fix it to keep or let someone else fix it to keep. Far too many doing half-arsed restorations on a budget for maximum profit, giving the buyer something to repair later.

I would do the repairs my self and fix what is needed. I would likely do a mild pro touring style build or return it back to it’s original condition

A broken door hinge means they can't possibly ignore the worn hinges any more.

I found that it all depends on the body condition rust in general and if everything original is still there such as engine, transmission and rear end.  Cause lets face it GM in 79 pumped those cars out with not the best quality and your going to be fixing and improving a lot of it anyway.

I would do the repairs my self and fix what is needed. I would likely do a mild pro touring style build or return it back to it’s original condition   

A stock restoration will bring better money and an easier sale than modified.
Also keeping it stock as it's an SE (as most people clamor for them) would be wise.

A one-owner genuine Y84 that's complete and numbers matching with the original paint, dash with no cracks, interior surprisingly intact for the vinyl seats, power window, A/C set up that runs and drives in somewhat decent shape?

For $3500?

You kidding? You can't find decent T/A's in reasonable shape for that price, let alone a running driving one that has a working A/C system and an interior. In really nice condition that's a minimal $30,000 car. Toss the wheels in the bin, find some cheap 'flakes, slap 'em on and that's ready for action. Dents don't stop the car from driving. That's what i'd call a genuine survivor.
