Title: 1979 Trans Am $9,500
Post by: jonathonar89 on August 18, 2009, 06:24:10 AM
1979 Pontiac Trans Am  $9,500

Engine/Trans:  Olds 403/TH 350

Condition:  The car sat in a warehouse of a car collector on an open title from 1984-2006 when I had picked it up.  I have modified little things like the exhaust, radio and wheels and will provide all of the original parts.  It currently has 90k on the odometer.  There is absolutely no rust on this car at all because it was ziebarted by the original owner.  Interior is in mint condition.

Vehicle options:  WS6 performance suspension, 4 Wheel Disc, Deluxe cloth interior, Tilt wheel, Air Conditioning, AM/FM 8 track and Cruise Control.

Reason for selling:  I just purchased a 79 400 4spd car in need of restoration and need to sell this car to start funding this project.  This car is a great if your looking for a low buck ride you can drive right away.

Yea, heritage brown with deluxe camel interior.  I wish I had a digital camera to take more pics right now because that pic really doesn't show much in the garage.

That is an amazing looking car. That heritage brown is one of my favorite colors on a T/A.

Thanks man, I wish this website and economy was good for selling but everyone on here already has a Trans Am so I haven't gotten any feedback.

I think a lot of people visit this site for the sole purpose of finding a car. In fact, this is where I found mine. I'll agree that the economy is a little rough at the present, though.

Hey if you still have this car could you email me at mewchat@hotmail.com with more pics and a number I can reach you. I am looking for a 1979 TA in either gold or heritage brown for my husbands 50th b-day next July. He had a brown one and when it was totaled in an accident he then bought a gold one, so I could get him either color and he would be happy. He always talks about his TA and wishes he never sold it and I figure I can buy one in pretty good shape and have all the needed repairs and such done by next summer and make him the happiest old guy in the world.
He bought me my first new car for my birthday, an 86.5 Fiero GT so I thought I would return the favor.

transam dave:  Thanks for the comment...I wish I could find a buyer and this is the only place it's currently posted on.  I'm just going to start detailing the engine bay and do some overall "brightening" up around the car until it sells.
T/A Tommy:  Thanks for posting the pics for me, I really appreciate it.
hada76:  She was a really nice lady from Michigan but I guess she had found a similar car near her and unfortunately never came to look at the car.

My goal was to keep all the changes on the car very subtle looking.  I think the rim tire setup give it a nice factory appeal to it, the radio was upgraded but the dash wasn't cut and the engine has a cam, intake, carb and exhaust.  I did other little things like smoke out the turn signals, if anyone noticed that, and bought a functional shaker kit (looks factory).

I really like your car especially with the 17's on it.
If I saw your car before I bought mine I would have probably bought yours .
I like the heritage brown, rare color you hardly see. what size are the tires? 255/50/17?

Hi everyone,
Yes I deceided to pass on this TA, and I know its beautiful but I just happend to find a project that fitted us on Craigslist. We bought a 1979 TA originally heritage brown but was almost completly disasembled and with alot of new sheet metal, an engine and trans rebuild, all new suspension, exhaust and cooling. The gentleman just got tired and run out of money. So my daughters 4 & 5 and myself decided this was the way to go and we went to the local custom shop and talked to the boys they checked it out for us and said Oh, Yeah this is a great deal, so for $2500.00 we bought this car and its now in their hands. They are so cool they have the girls come over and do a little sanding or pre loosend bolt removal so we can get some pics and they can tell daddy-man they wrenched on his ride. The guys at the shop really like the girls there and they really make sure they are part of it and see that the girls are involved in every decision. The car has been stripped down completely, interior, glass, trim, engine, drive train etc and it was sent out to the sandblaster and will be back tomorrow. So even though we had alot of it done for us we are doing a pretty agressive resto on the car and I hope he loves it when its done. If anyone would like to see pics we would love to post them.
I am really sorry that I didn't buy your car this just was the right thing to do when it popped up, and by the way thanks Dave you were really sweet.
Christine

Thanks for the interest Christine!  Your husband is a very lucky man and i hope he likes his gift.  I would really like to sell this thing so I can start funding the restoration for my other car I have.  It's hard being a full time college student, having a girlfriend, working and having two trans am's.  Anyways, post some pics on the forum, I'm sure that I and many others on here will be interested to see the transformation.  Don't feel the need to apologize, I would have done the same thing if I were you :)
Thanks, Jon

Still for sale if anyone wants it.  I just replaced the alternator (looks nice when new) and hopefully now I will have time to try repainting the air cleaner base, a/c and alternator brackets with a new coat of black to do some "freshening up" in engine bay for the next owner  :)

The paint on the body is original and has its imperfections but no, it's not hiding anything at all.  I don't want to make it seem like a trophy winning prize piece but the car was honestly stored from '84-'06 and is super solid.

It's going to need a front passenger tire and a tune. Right now my budget and time is being spent on the project car so no real amount of money from me is going to see this car unless I remotivated to keep it.  It would eventually need to get repainted in the future because it has crowes feet real bad (factory paint) on the passenger side.  My assumption is that the sun basically cooked it through a window for over 20 years in storage.

Okay I know I promised these earlier but these are the last pics at the body shop this week. Little more work than we though but its going to be mint. I am getting so excited and a bit scared that this thing is not going to be done in time, drop dead date is 7-23 cause the party is the night of 7-24. I see a couple of the projects infront of mine are starting to move out, they just finshed a '57 chevy and '68 cougar.
I have one delema and maybe you guys can help me out, like I said earlier hubby totaled this car out when it was about 8 mos. old and it did not have t tops, but the gold one he bought to replace it did and he liked them. (he is also 6'5" so the headroom probably was an issue) His original 1st new car did not have t top's, should I or should I not put them in this one? Even if he liked them do you think it will take away from trying to give him his first new car back if I change it in any way?

Is it normal for "for sale" posts to get 5 pages of discussion?  haha

I am sorry guys, is there a way I can post all of my questions and pics? I do not want to streach this thread out more than it should. By the way Dave, I understand I am a collecting goof myself, you just have to look at it and say do I need it, and can I live with out it? If the answers are yes and then no, you know what you have to do, if not there will always be another that fits your bill even more.
I am looking for a donor or a few parts actually ....need the air conditioning system .... some one cut it out. You know when you get old its not a luxury... its a necessity. I am picking out the stereo system in the next few days. Do you think I should go old school like it was originally and put an underdash Cassette like he did???? or just go freakin crazy and make it rock. While the interior is out, there will be big time speaker etc. upgrades.

RE: Yes you can start your own thread in the restoration section. We just went through the air thing with joes 1979 gold trans am,his was a non a/c car,non power windows,no tilt wheel, next is 4/wheel disc brakes.  P.S power trunk also.

mewchat...don't worry about stretching out the length of this post.  That has already happened so no need to worry about that.  I just need to post some new pics of my car.

I would say go with a modern stereo in the car.  The aftermarket models (vintage style) lack the quality that you get in up-to-date modern car stereos.  I went that route with my custom autosound stereo because I didn't want to cut the dash and I'm not very satisfied when I compare to what I have experienced for the same price.  I feel that my amp/speaker (fosgate amp/infinity 6x9's) setup is not being used to it's full potential with my custom autosound unit.

Ugh...

Its going so slow, I hope it gets done in time. I went to the shop the other day and they had the engine all painted and detailed and just waiting for the carb to come back. I cannot wait to hear it run, they said it sounded awsome and when they peeked inside everything looked new just like the guy who sold it to me said. The shop is suposed to start the assembly this week. OMG, can you believe my hubby walked in their shop to see if they could work on our other car, he looked all around at all of their projects and never even picked up on the TA on the rotisorie. They were freakin' and just kinda blew by it with him.

This surprise is going so well, my daughters 4 and 5 have no uttered a word of this project for 6 months to anyone, no one can believe it. Hubby wanted this boat and I said OK but that is deffinatly your whole b-day gift and he was tickled and I know he will not be expecting anything.

I found a banquet facility that will let me bring the car in and have it there when he walks in.... Surprise! A friend of ours that has been with his woman for 10 years now let him think they were going to get married and he will assume that we are going to their wedding.

Should have more pics soon,

For some reason it is not letting me post any pics.

Went to the shop today and there has been a ton of progress. The engine and drive train, cooling system, and all of the suspention is in.

I decided to go with an all new interior and that came in today along with all the decals. It all looked excellent except they accidentally sent the vinyl seats instead of the Hobnail cloth ones I wanted, but they will exchange them.

I will start posting pics and see if I can get it to work this time.

Hey if anyone knows someone that may be interested in my car, let me know.  This is pretty much the only website it has been on and I am in no rush to sell.  I just picked up some pro-touring f-body solid body mount bushings...sweet!  The car handles great with the factory WS6 setup and the 17x9's so I imagine that the solid body mounts should help cure some chassis flex...original rubber bushings always look like hell when you take them out.  $9,500 takes her home.

well the party went great and hubby was so surprised. I have a million pics and will post them with a link, it was so cool. He was in such shock he couldn't even talk just stare at the car. I will post a few pics of the car right before they finished the sanding and decals. Check out the wheels, they turned out so good.
Talk to you all soon,
Christine

Thanks!  A family friend really likes the car so I gave him a good deal to keep it around (it's my high school car).  I'm swapping the headlights, turn signals, and rims with my other '79 so he can have a stock appering '79 T/A.  I'll make a project thread for the other car so everyone can see that build.
