Removing front sway bar
« on: March 16, 2007, 06:28:34 PM »
Has anyone ever had trouble removing the front sway bar? I thought it would be really simple! First i went ot take off the end links and the bolt broke off!! Then i wrestled with the rest of the end link to get it out, didn't happen. So i decided to "move on" and unbolt the bushing that hold the sway bar to the frame but the bolts just turn in the hole. I tried to chisle and pry but the bolt just turns the sleeve in the frame. Any help would be apreciated as my knuckes can't take anymore abuse......lol

The bolts in the sway bar bushing mount are turning the sleeves that are in the frame. Therefore if i cut the heads of the bolts off i will get the sway bar off, but will still have to deal with getting the leftover bolt out and also removing the sleeve that is sandwiched in the frame. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a trick to it? It seems like it should be so simple, but am finding it is not. Thanks for any advice.

Well guys i finally got the sway bar off!! It was way more of a chore than i thought. I ended up destroying both end links (they both broke off) and i had to cut the allen heads off of the rubber bushing bolts. Now i still have to cut what is left of the bolts that are in the frame. I was looking in such books as Paddock, NPD, and Classic Industries and none of then have replacement bolts or frame bushings. Was this a factory set up, or was this someone "fast fix"? To explain better the allen bolt goes through the bushing bracket and into a threaded sleeve that is in the frame. All mentioned hardware are now destroyed on my car. I will need new hardware and help to find out where to get these or even if that is the original way of doing it? Thanks for the help.

I had the same issue, fortunately it was only with one of the allen bolts.  I just bought a new bolt with a nut and washer.  It's not easy to get the nut back on the bolt from inside the frame, but it can be done.

First, go to photobucket.com or similar free hosting sites (imageshack.com is another) and sign up.  It's like 78TA.com to "join".  The follow their directions to upload  your pics.  After you've got them there, click on the thumbnail to get to the full-size pic.  On the page with the full-size pic you will find a list of links -- you want the one for forums and message board postings.  Copy the entire IMG link line, then come back here to 78TA.com and paste it into your posting reply.  PRESTO -- pics linked to this forum!  Raise your hand if you have problems -- we'll help! :)
